24.01.2022 1/04/2020 UCT Youth Devotional Inspiration for today from God’s Word Scripture: 1 Sam.17:45-47 Theme: Doing God’s Will... ‘Does knowing God’s will impact what you do and don’t do? There are somethings that we know are God’s will. For instance, we know that God wants us to read our Bible, pray and attend Church. I don’t have to pray about whether I should love my wife or provide for my children. Other things require a search for the will of God. Sometimes God’s will show us that we are to do something, sometimes He shows us something that we shouldn’t do. David was a man after God’s own heart. We remember him best for his courageous stand against Goliath the Philistine. Though Goliath was a seasoned warrior of great reputation David would not let him mock the armies of God. The shepherd boy took his sling shot, five smooth stones, and the confidence of a man on a mission from God in a battle. In the centre of God’s will, David lost his fear, and Goliath lost his head. David was willing to do God’s will after he learnt it. David was a doer, yet one-time God stopped David from doing something- He stopped him from building the Temple. Not because David was evil, but because God had other plans for him. David showed he was willing not to do something because of God’s direction. Do You want to know God’s will, or do You want to do God’s will? Most people have a curiosity to know what God wants, but that doesn’t mean they want to do what God wants. Are You willing to do what He wants You to do? Are you ready to forgo something you want to do, that God doesn’t want You to? Prayer: Lord help us today to know your will for lives and may we live according to your will so that we may glorify you in all that we do Today. Amen

02.01.2022 UCT Youth Devotional - Monday 06/04/2020 Inspiration for today from God’s Word Scripture: Ephesians. 6:13 (NLT) Children obey your parents because you belong ...to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. [2] ‘Honor your father and mother.’ This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. [3] And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother, ‘you will live a long life, full of blessing.’ () Theme: Honoring Your Parents In this passage, Paul instructs children to honor their parents. His command is a direct reference to the fifth commandment. What does it mean to honor your parents? Well, the meaning is a bit complex. In the Ten Commandments, it has financial consequences as does our word honorarium. In the ancient near east, the only means of support an aged parent would have is from their children. That’s why the command has a promise. To paraphrase, your children are more likely to provide for you if you will provide for your parents. But honor in this text has other meanings too. In his commentary, William Barclay explains that the word also means to obey them, to respect them, and never to cause them pain. Deep down inside, I’ve always known that honoring my parents involved obeying and respecting them, but the third thing Barclay mentionsnever causing them painseems to be an impossibility. I can speak from experience and you can probably admit, most of our lives we cause our parents more than their fair share of grief. This particular scripture speaks volumes to me, now that I only have my mum and I thank God for his blessings upon her life, though I will never be able to clear my debt to her, perhaps being the person she raised me to be, will honor her and make amends for the heartaches I’ve caused. If Barclay is right, and I suspect he is, honoring our parents could become a full-time job. And I guess that’s the point. We must do more than obey and respect them, we must show due honor to the lifetime they’ve invested in us. If we live our lives right, the worse pain we will ever cause our mother will be during childbirth. Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you today for our Parents. We thank you for the sacrifices they have made for us, their time and especially their patience. Help us to honor our parents and may you bless them greatly in your name. Amen.
