Challenging tasks and problem solving is a great way to learn and grow my skillset. Q - When I think about the future of the industry I am excited by TP - Thinking about the future of the property, I am excited by both the growth of future neighbourhood activity centres outside of the CBD as well as the move towards alternative housing types including Medium Density in brownfield areas. Broadening the diversity of Melbourne’s housing stock to cater for different household types is important when addressing affordability in the property market. Q - My greatest career inspiration/support has been because TP - I have been very fortunate to have a great support network throughout my career. I have learnt so much from both my mentors and the project teams I have worked with throughout my time in the industry.

06.01.2022 This month we get to know Amy Watson, who is a Lawyer at Clayton Utz. Amy worked as a commercial property lawyer in Auckland and Perth, before joining the Melbourne Real Estate team of Clayton Utz in May 2019. She has experience working on a range of property law matters including undertaking legal due diligence for, and completing, the acquisition and disposal of retail, office and vacant land sites throughout Australia and New Zealand, negotiating leases for both landlords ...and tenants and assisting with owners corporation structuring and development arrangements. Amy has recently joined the UDIA WIP committee and is looking forward to attending some UDIA events when the Victorian social distancing restrictions have been lifted! Q - A tip I would give to my younger self A - Don’t hesitate to put yourself forward for development or networking opportunities which you don’t think you’ll be selected for even if you're unsuccessful this time, demonstrating that you’re keen may open another door for you later on. Q - My greatest career inspiration/support has been because A - In each place that I’ve worked, I am fortunate to have been supervised by a more senior lawyer/Partner who has led by example in the way that they carry out their practice, from their ability to efficiently and accurately deliver commercial legal advice, to the manner in which they interact with clients and manage team members to foster engagement in our work and create an environment where people aren’t afraid to share their ideas or to speak up if assistance is needed. Q - The benefits I receive from being a UDIA member A - Particularly as someone who is new to Melbourne, being a member of UDIA has provided me with opportunities to meet people across a range of fields in the property industry, to be kept up to date with new industry initiatives and to hear about the challenges the property industry here is currently facing and what potentially needs to change to overcome these.

She is passionate about promoting and supporting the success of women in leadership through developing their skills and increasing their access to opportunities for advancement. Q - A challenging situation in my career that I overcame MA - The most challenging time in my career was 10 years ago, when I started my first job as an urban designer in Melbourne. While it was such an exciting adventure for me, emotionally it was hard to work as a junior urban designer while you have two Master’s Degrees in architecture and urban design with 6 years’ experience! I had to work very hard adjusting myself to be able to use all my knowledge and experience within the new planning and design framework here in Melbourne! I always was trying to look forward to achieving my goals. I really do appreciate great support from my managers and colleagues in my first job who helped me to go through this stage. Q - A tip I would give to my younger self MA - Always follow your dreams and plan your life yourself! Great opportunities in life do not come every day, recognise them and don’t miss them. Put your hands up for professional networking and training opportunities! Q - My greatest career inspiration/support has been because MA - I’ve had mentors in different stages of my life who supported me, and I’m very grateful my greatest support is my husband Ali who always encourages and helps me to follow my dreams!
