25.01.2022 It may take a while but ....

24.01.2022 No stranger at all. This Blacktip has been resident in this area for as long as I can remember, longer. Always checks you out. Everyone who has dived Inside Point knows him. I love this sea whip area.

22.01.2022 Deeper and darker can be so very peaceful as you watch the whalers glide about.

20.01.2022 A Short Encounter with a Sea Snake There I was very cautiously, not moving, checking out our favourite Landoro Garden overhang. I was focussed on a golden fan which is the backyard for a family of small cleaner shrimp and often at this time of year, black and golden speckled Ghost Pipefish. Jill was metres away filming a cod being cleaned when she noticed this sea snake working its way along the reef, putting its head into every nook & cranny, hunting for food. It was naviga...ting along my right fin and leg and was lined up with the gaping right leg opening of my board shorts. As I wore no undergarment it was probably an enticing cavity to explore looking for morsels to chew on. I felt a very urgent pull on my left fin and slowly turned, which was enough to ensure the sea snake missed the short opening and calmly glided along the front of my body and onwards. In these hard times the adage 'any advertising exposure is good exposure' may have crossed Jill's mind but in any case she chose to intervene. Despite their 'deadly' reputation sea snakes are generally well behaved and not concerned with divers, seeming to rely more on 'sniffing' divers than seeing, as they seek food. But if one becomes intertwined in your shorts it may be disconcerting, at least in your mind. A beautiful animal, I had a lovely 20m swim with it as it foraged onwards. See more

19.01.2022 Dramatic clouds building over New Georgia at noon.

16.01.2022 COLOURS OF AN ANEMONE Often we divers focus on the symbiotic fish and the commensal Porcellein Crabs and various shrimp that live on Anemones. But anemones are stunning animals themselves. This video was taken in a depth of about 6 metres, bright sunlight and in an absolutely roaring current. With waves of sunlight generated by small waves overhead projected downwards and some 'warm' video light applied at times the colour variations are magic, animated by the swaying tentacles. It is not commonly called the 'Magnificent Anemone' without good reason!

14.01.2022 MURKYFUN It was very murky early morning in the lagoon early last week but that did not stop these four Mantas from having the time of their lives.

14.01.2022 When the days are long and filled with maintenance jobs and renovations, Jill and Grant have been enjoying the #underwaterworld once everything above the surface is quiet and the sun is setting. They’ve been diving from the wedding deck below their house which is right above Uepi Point making for easy access to the reef and even easier exit after the dive for a cup of tea in bed!

13.01.2022 Huge smack of jellyfish drifting in to the Uepi Passage recently with the incoming current.. Jill was very interested to see how the different fish reacted to the jellies. Some ate them (sergeant majors) whilst others ate associated micro critters nearby. Some simply ignored the chaos erupting around them. So much action. It was great!! - Jill Here’s to an exciting weekend!... @jillatuepi #diveresort #escapetoparadise #southpacificislands #solomonislands #underwatervideography #lifeunderwater #uepiislandresort

12.01.2022 PEEPHOLE The wall as you approach Tamalivi Point from the west was far below its best a year ago. But it is now rejuvenated with a vivid range of fans, soft corals, sea whips and other invertebrates. The Point itself is as always a brilliant concentration of coral reef life from 25m to the surface. The recent heavy coral spawning can only add to its beauty.

12.01.2022 Hello to our Uepi Family, We have been missing our dinner time conversations with you all! It’s usually over a delicious Uepi meal that we get your feedback and we talk about all things diving - life - politics! We miss it! We miss you!! This year we have been underwater a lot less than usual and less than we’d like! Between keeping the resort maintained on skeleton staff, renovating and feeding the growing family, we all have less time for diving! What we hope to do for yo...u is post a video and some photos once a week and keep you all up to date on the Reno progress as we go along! What do you think?? What do you want to see here on our Uepi IG?? Love to you all! Team Uepi @jillatuepi #uepiislandresort #diveresort #escapetoparadise #lifeunderwater #solomonislands #iamssi

11.01.2022 Night diving is one of those things... you either love it or not. Are you a fan of night diving?? For us, night diving requires little fus. Access is easy and dive sites are very close so if the currents permit, the very best place to night dive is right here in Uepi passage or on the point!! So lucky! Here’s another little sample from Jill... night diving Uepi Point right from their house at the Rock this week! ... #uepiisland #uepiislandresort #scubadiverslife #escapetoparadsie #diveresort #scubadiving #diveadventures #divemag #pacificislands #holidaydestination #creaturefeature

10.01.2022 Grant and Jill jump in for a dive from the Rock to find flock of Eagles! FROLICKING WITH THE EAGLES Mid afternoon Jill and I returned to The Rock. As always we could not resist looking directly down from the outside deck at the fringing reef about 6 metres below. Intuitively we always check out conditions, especially tidal cycles and water visibility. It looked great and without discussion, in an instant, the decision had been made in both our minds to dive. Immediately adja...cent just metres from us a party of Eagle Rays were extraordinarily active, soaring rapidly in circular orbits, barely avoiding front on collisions, frolicking with gay abandon, all in shallow fringing reef water. We have seen this behaviour a number of times before and whilst never witnessing an actual mating believe these gatherings are part of the mating ritual. Fortunately we had tanks and our dive equipment immediately at hand and quickly assembled them on the 'wedding deck'. After speedy camera preparations we deployed from the deck and carefully negotiated a path over the shallow reef into a few metres of water to watch the show. As with many normally shy marine animals when 'love is in the air' the shyness disappears. The Eagles zoomed at, over, and around each other. They have a behavior where they race towards each other and avoid collision at the last moment. Maybe this is just showning off or maybe it raises the hormone levels? At times they included us in this scenario which meant we had no idea of their prescence until they were right upon us. At other times with several or more in close proximity to each other they all twirled and danced about. They certainly are strong, graceful and agile creatures. After about 10 minutes they moved away a little so rather than pursue them we explored the rest of Uepi Point. Thats another story. Hope you enjoy the frolicking, Grant & Jill #escapetoparadise #scubadivinglife #iamssi #diveresort #spottedeagleray #underwaterworld #underwatervideography #islandlife #uepiisland #uepiislandresort

09.01.2022 What motivates you to scuba dive?? Is it relaxation, exploration, your camera or a holiday activity?? Tell us in the comments! We each have different reasons for venturing underwater. This week we dived together as a family (Jill, Grant, Jase and Katie) and even though we’re off exploring different parts of the reef it’s an experience shared and enjoyed and that’s something very special to us. Grant is taking photos, Jill is on video, Jase is cruising with the #goprohero8 and... me, well I’m just drifting around not thinking about much other than fish and the beautiful turtle that decided to chill with us! We can’t wait to hear from you about what gets you excited to be underwater!! Katie and Team Uepi @jillatuepi #southpacificislands #iamssi #discoverocean #diveresort #escapetoparadise #islandliving

09.01.2022 What are you smiling for? Well I'm diving aren't I !!

08.01.2022 Your fans are waiting for you at UEPI I can hear the long sighs and picture the rolling of eyes my 'Dad Joke' will produce but what the heck any joke is better than no sense of humour. So humour me and reply with your favourite joke. Thats a challenge ! Inside Point, early morning magic. My favourite early morning dive. Only 100m from the breakfast table, you can smell the coffee and hot toast when you surface. Grant

08.01.2022 Free-Dive the reefs of Marovo Lagoon The Marovo Lagoon has an outer barrier reef about 130 kms long, with endless reefs to explore by Free-Diving or simply surface snorkelling. Be energetic diving deep amongst the steep walls, caverns and overhangs and vibrant points or just lazily lie on top watching the boundless marine life in the shallows.

07.01.2022 Secret Spot Shines Diving Secret Spot was long overdue. Jill and I are always a bit apprehensive when we have not dived a site for a while, fearing that storms, over zealous fishing, Crown Of Thorns, Drupella outbreaks, or even bleaching may have degraded portions of the reef. Some of these issues we can address, some we just have to accept. Secret Spot is a simply huge coral reef area that is characterised by masses upon masses of hard coral formations, inumerable caves and ...swim throughs, prolific numbers of anemones with attendant fish, and small fish variety. You will never see it all. Add in modest numbers of clams, turtles, cuttlefish; and along the drop-off, eagle rays and the occassional hammerhead. But the highglight is colourful coral formations. Heaps of it. So we dropped in. The water on the dropoff was not that clear as once again there was massive coral spawning around the full moon a night or two before which always correlates with poorer visability generally. But it cleared as we reached the fringing reef and in no time we were giving each other enthusiastic "OK" signals as we explored the nearest reef sections. Post dive we agreed that the coral was probably the most healthy and colourful it had ever been. And that new corals were growing all over the place. The most colourful plate corals that have never been so dominant were also spreading in new sites along the reef. One one small spot of storm damage, no COT at all, no drupellas, no obvious fishing damage, and only a few corals showing any stress. Water temperature was a nice 29C, good for corals. So here is a video that shows just how intense the reef at Secret Spot is. The signs are it is just going to get better and better in the coming months. Fingers crossed. Now to see some other overdue reefs. See more

06.01.2022 The DIVE MAGAZINE DIVE TRAVEL AWARDS 2020 voting is attracting more interest than ever with record nominations. So far 80 unique destinations, 233 liveaboards and a staggering 591 dive centres and resorts have been nominated. Nominations close at the end of July. Thats a lot of competition especially in the Dive Centres and Resorts category with a top 25 position currently representing a top 4% finish (liveaboards 11% & destinations 31%). We would love to have your support o...nce again and make the initial top 25, who are then ranked in a final round of voting. And of course lets give the awesome diving in the Solomon Islands the reputation it deserves with your support. As a small resort and a small destination up against the biggest and wealthiest in the world your vote is so very much appreciated. If you love Uepi and the Solomons then you can vote by using the following link. Please let your family and friends who have been to Uepi and the Solomons know. http://divemagazine.co.uk//9021-dive-travel-awards-2020-fi Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you whenever that may be. 'Leana Via' Team Uepi

05.01.2022 DIVE MAGAZINE TRAVEL AWARDS We are very excited at Uepi reaching the final 25 in the prestigious Dive Magazine Travel Awards. It is all due to you, our friends of Uepi, who took the time and energy and voted for us. Thank you for your love of Uepi, we appreciate your awesome loyalty and support. This year the competition for the Travel Awards was HUGE with about 1100 nominations in the Resort and Dive Operation section. And I can think of some very worthy operations that wer...e not nominated. So such a result places Uepi in the top few percent globally. Be reassured we are not taking this too seriously, but it is a very satisfying result and we will humbly do our best to be worthy of this. Now that the top 25 are selected, the final phase is to vote for the top 10. Frankly, we will have to pull a Rabbitfish or two out of a hat to achieve this, as we are a small fish in a large pond, with some mega dive operations to compete against. But we do have plenty of Rabbitfish ! So why not give it a go! So I am asking if you can find the energy to cast a final vote for Uepi and see how far we can get. If your family or friends have been to Uepi then please let them know that the vote for the top 10 is now in process during August. Perhaps share this post, spread the word. Of course, please also place a vote for the magical Solomon Islands as a Destination. And if you have been on Bilikiki they are well in the running in the Liveaboard section. We appreciate any support you can give. All of this exposure, especially good results, really helps the small island nation Solomon Islands to establish and maintain its international reputation as a premier diving destination. With a modest economy and a small but vibrant diving industry, such exposure is invaluable, especially in these hard times. We believe that sustainable tourism is the very best way forward for the Solomon Islands to succeed in the future. Diving has been the backbone of the Solomon tourism industry and must remain so in the future. This is the link to vote. I found it a little tricky to begin but once started it fell into place. Whatever the outcome thanks for getting us into the top 25. 'Leana Via' from Grant, Jill, Jason, Katie and Team Uepi http://divemagazine.co.uk//9057-dive-travel-awards-2020-vo

03.01.2022 It’s hard to imagine a dive at #uepiisland when you look out to #thedeepbluesea and don’t see a #shark ! Lately it’s almost strange if you don’t see multiple sharks from every and any jetty on the island ... sharks sharks sharks! We love sharks!! #islanddreaming #escapetoparadise #sharkconservation #holidaydestination

03.01.2022 The reef as I saw it today A wild, wet, stormy night. Even the sun stayed in bed an hour longer. Then as often happens the world transforms so quickly and our intention, to dive no matter what, was no longer a challenge. Uepi Point was beckoning with a nice incoming current, the sun was dodging a few remaining clouds, the wind had calmed and the sea surface was smooth. The biggest school of Midnight Snapper ever greeted us as we backward rolled and from that time onwards all ...manner of fish swarmed across, amongst and around us and the brilliant corals. I impulsively fell into a random 'point & shoot' mode and began compiling my story of the reef as I saw it today. The sun shone, shadows passed over, the viz was great, sometimes hazy, the current was strong, the current was weak. Thats diving and the joy of it is being there in the moment. I hope this video takes you there. Jill & Team Uepi See more

02.01.2022 Uepi is very proud of our national carrier Solomon Islands, who despite the formidable obstacles small island nations face in maintaining an airline, have over the years faced all challenges and today carry the hopes and dreams of Solomon Islanders in being a mature, diverse, and vibrant nation of the world. A symbol of this is the brilliant A320 'Spirit of Solomons' which has reached its 6 months of operation anniversary and so Solomon Airlines has launched its Memories of Flying competition. Follow Solomon Airlines as they have great FB posts and enter the competition to win a return flight for two. WOW ... that might mean we see you sooner at Uepi.

02.01.2022 Making the most of this quiet period to try and keep on track with some of our redevelopment plans. We’ve had teams of staff coming up when resources become available to work on the new bungalows. There’s been great progress with the new main house building too which is looking close to complete now. Honestly these guys have been working so hard in the heat and blowing us away with their continued efforts! It’s also a great chance for employment for the local communities give...n the very difficult year it has been for tourism. We hope to share more soon! Team Uepi @jillatuepi #diveresort #escapetoparadise #islandescape #holidaydestinations

01.01.2022 Taking advantage of some light cloud cover Jason & Bobbie are toiling on a hot and steep roof, fixing the ridge-cap of a new beachfront bungalow. Pity they have to work as the view is awesome.
