25.01.2022 *SOLD* This is a first for us at ‘Ugly Duckling,’ two posts on one day! But we think it’s worth it! We have completed another pair of side tables and we think they look unreal!... This pair were cut from a dead-fall Tuart branch. Yours Truly was hunting all day for a customer order of two beside tables when I came across the branch. It was still hung up where it broke off the tree, so after a good hour of cutting and chain dragging it to the ground, I was most upset when it had a star shaped hole in it! After walking away for an hour, I had a thought... I wonder if it will fit a globe? Well it did and here we are! After hours of sanding (and Katie providing detail work with a tiny screwdriver to remove any dirt), plus 4 coats of Beeswax and Carnauba wax the true beauty comes out! Colours from honey yellow, through to caramel and even rose pink shine through. The sides are etched with the tracks of Borer Worms, providing texture and distinction. We have fitted the logs with Edison globes, with 4m of cable and a switch. The soft light these throw is perfect for a bedside lamp or mood light. Measurements are 43cm tall and 45/35cm diameter. This pair is SOLD.

24.01.2022 After weeks of preparation, the Ugly Duckling Team put boots on the ground in Subiaco today! It was pretty warm in the sun but we managed to successfully deliver 2 whole loads of furniture and Nature Play supplies to help transform the space! With pub tables for the adults, kids tables for the little ones, bench seats to sit in the shade, enjoy a beer and take in the live music, and a fully kitted out fairy garden there is something for everyone! The best part is everything w...e have supplied will be for sale at the event! The real showstopper is a 3.2m table and bench seats, with ENORMOUS 10x3inch Jarrah planks on top and a honey gold WA Blackbutt frame providing some amazing contrast. If your backyard can handle this monster why not drop in, grab a beer and take her for a test drive? We can’t wait to see the progress tomorrow as the plants arrive, more furniture is installed and the space develops! Stand by for the media launch on Wednesday... The Ugly Duckling Team will be there to get some photos (and a few cheeky Otherside Brewery frothies ) Kicking off from Thursday, 263 Hay Street Subiaco.

20.01.2022 At Ugly Duckling the Team Member of the Week award goes to ‘Pig’! Born in 1974 she’s 47 years young and still beautiful in our eyes She’s power lifted this monster 3m long by 1.2m wide 3.5 tonne Tuart log into the sawmill so we can recycle it as beautiful slabs. ... *This tree was cut down this week in Mount Claremont and we got word it was available, so a quick scramble to get a crane truck and we have saved it for furniture

18.01.2022 It Begins.... Welcome To The Otherside

18.01.2022 At Ugly Duckling we pride ourselves on making furniture not firewood. However, often the access agreements we have with other landowners involves us clearing all the deadwood from the properties as it’s a bushfire hazard. Unfortunately as hard as we try to up-cycle, not all timber is suitable for furniture, nature play etc, so we are selling the the excess as firewood. This year we have purchased a 30T hydraulic log splitter so we can provide split and ready to burn Tuart.... When you buy from us you know you’re purchasing sustainably sourced dead fall timber from private property. (We only take fallen timber) Tuart is a splintery wood, harder & denser than Jarrah so it burns for longer, at a higher temperature & is very low ash. It’s arguably the far better home fire burning wood because it burns longer overnight & starts burning easier thanks to all the splinters. Requires little or no need of kindling when split. Tuart also retains coals that can be raked over the next day to more easily restart the fire. Compare this to Jarrah which burns all but totally out and needs to be actively ‘restarted’ the next cold morning! They say ‘the early bird gets the worm,’ and so we are having an early Duckling gets the discount sale. We normally charge $300 for an XL 7x5 trailer load of split, seasoned Tuart with free delivery NOR. Mention this post and we are offering a 10% discount off your first load, valid until mid April. With the hot weather in the rear view mirror it’s a great time to get your firewood stocked early for winter!

18.01.2022 *SOLD* At Ugly Duckling we love the different colours of Tuart timber and this ‘Charcuterie Board’ is an excellent example. This board was milled from a large log we were cutting for a clients order. As we got to the bottom of the log, a borer worm hole appeared and it was unsuitable for his purposes. In true Ugly Duckling style, rather than throw it away, we featured the hole as a finger hold for the board.... Finished in locally produced Gilly Stephens food safe wax, the colours range from deep caramel and honey through to rose pink in the three hearts of this board. Dimensions are 600mm long and 380mm wide, with a thickness of 35mm.

18.01.2022 If you're a fan of Natural Edge tables then we think you will love this! The old saying goes nothing good happens fast and this strikes true for this table. It has taken nearly two months of head scratching to finish. This is our second ‘Ugly Duckling’ piece, the Live Edge table. This beauty was made from an aged Jarrah slab cap that was discarded by the Mill, coupled with a Tuart ‘Y’ piece we recovered from our own property and was earmarked for firewood. When Yours Tru...ly was having sitting around the fire one night with a Neighbour, beer-spiration struck and the idea of putting a top on a ‘Y’ piece was born. The next issue was how to match the two together! Eventually we found a way to marry the two completely individual pieces together and we think you will love the result! We finished this piece with four coats of ‘Gilly Stephens’ WA beeswax and carnauba wax to bring it to a high shine. The blood red through to rose pink colours of the Jarrah slab cap wrapped in the Cambium layer tie it into, and yet juxtapose the honey yellows and caramel tones interspersed with black and even green that make up the solid Tuart ‘Y’ base. Measuring an impressive 1.3m long, 55cm wide and standing at just over 40cm tall, this is a real statement piece for your room or man cave. Asking price is $500.

15.01.2022 At ‘Ugly Duckling’ we are proud to bring you our first ‘Wandoo’ side tables! These beauties were earmarked for use as firewood. When a mate called and said he had a load of Wandoo logs to burn, we franticly scrambled to trade for the lot. Lucky we did, these are amazing! With a natural hollow in the log centre they were prime candidates for an Edison Globe fit-out. We have hand waxed them with four coats of Gilly Stephens Beeswax and Carnauba wax to bring them to a high shine... and bring out Scandi pale tones the of the cambium layer to offset the caramel and honey colours of the heart wood. These logs are totally unique and would be an amazing discussion point in any home. They would also suit a bedroom setting with the lamps providing soft mood light. We are asking $300 per table or $550 for the pair.

14.01.2022 Big things are coming at Ugly Duckling! (Literally!) We picked up our brand new Australian made Lucas Mill today! After a little wrangling we got it onto the car and trailer legally (barely) up to Two Rocks. Once Yours Truly figures out how to put the big girl together we will get right down to some slabbing and Timber Salvage. We already have a few rescue logs stashed around the neighborhood! ... Watch this space for some beautiful slabs and hopefully no missing fingers as we expand our little business

13.01.2022 As we approach two months operating as "Ugly Duckling Timber Co" it seems like a great time to showcase some photos from our customers! We love getting feedback and seeing the timber in its new home. We think you guys will agree it looks pretty cool seeing a natural timber product given a second chance to be something special. Thanks again to all those of you who have 'liked' or 'followed' us and again a massive shoutout to those who have purchased from us also! It's you guy...s that have made it possible for us to continue doing what we love. We can't wait to bring you more weird and wonderful creations as we grow. Please don't forget we not only supply finished furniture, we can also provide raw timber, semi processed timber, advice and inspiration, and if nothing else we just love a good chat! From the 'Ugly Duckling Team,' Cheers!

12.01.2022 Fire Bench Seats have been super popular this week at Ugly Duckling. Looking at them inspires us to light the fire barrel, drop the tools and grab a hearty glass of stout! These beautiful benches are made with recycled Jarrah slab caps that were leftovers from re-cut power poles. The Jarrah is weathered and hard and when processed and oiled with Organoil the famous Jarrah reds and pinks really glow. We affix these on solid Tuart logs to give them a sturdy base and perfect ben...ch seat height. They won't blow away that's for sure! We can't wait to see them in their new homes! If your interested in a bench please get in touch. We only have a few Jarrah tops left!

11.01.2022 At Ugly Duckling we love when customers appreciate the timber as much as we do! Linda and Alan came to check out the Live Edge table but it was too red for their decor. Thankfully we had a new piece we hadn’t even shared yet! The Tuart Peanut was made from a cross grain slice of Tuart Log that we cut with the Lucas Mill. Sitting on black flat bar metal legs, the concentric tree rings of the double hearts radiate warm colours of caramel and dark honey encased by a proud cambium layer. We hope they love this table and the Hollow Log Lamp they rehomed! Thanks again guys!

10.01.2022 You may have noticed that the Ugly Duckling Timber Co team has been uncharacteristically quiet over the last few weeks... (or you may have enjoyed the break from us in your news feed). We have been taking a much needed break at Ningaloo Station for a little ‘R and R’ and some time off grid and out of phone reception. (Apologies to those who messaged us for the delayed response) But fear not, we have returned! Refreshed and ready to tackle a whole new range of projects and wit...h some fresh inspiration brewing. While we were away Yours Truly had a little break from all the timber related nighttime dreams but like the father of the prodigal son, I’m ready to welcome them back. We will be working on some fantastic new projects and catching up on the work we left behind over the coming weeks. So please continue to support us by watching this space and let us know if there if you have a bespoke project we can help make a reality!

08.01.2022 'The Railway Table' Its finally done! After a very long month the 'Railway Table' is all finished and we have the pictures for you all to enjoy! This was no easy build... This table produced a lot of blood, sweat and even a few tears! But the outcome we think was nothing short of stunning. ... These re-milled railway sleepers are some of the most beautiful and detailed timber we have ever seen. Every crack and rail spike hole is scarred black and beautifully accentuates the blood red of the Jarrah. The bottom and sides of the planks present in their full rustic glory as we only sanded them smooth to the touch, preserving the lumps and bumps. The dark reds and purples in the timber denote it as Old Growth Jarrah. My mind often wandered during the many hours I spent sanding each sleeper. These were ancient trees that were cut down to produce these sleepers. How many trains did they carry safely to their destination, and how many people have passed over them in their second life? And now, rather than being left to rot in a garden bed or retaining wall, this timber has been given another chance to show its true colours and bring joy to those who sit around her. This table really showcases what we are all about at 'Ugly Duckling' and we are so proud the owners allowed us to put a stainless steel plaque on her!

06.01.2022 We have another sneak-preview for all you Ugly Duckling followers tonight! These recycled Jarrah framed 'Tractor Seat Barstools' are freshly oiled and about to head to the 'Welcome to The Otherside' event in Subiaco where they will be for sale! Featuring recycled Jarrah frames coated with Organoil and tractor seat tops they are super comfortable for long afternoons in the sun sinking beers, a deck bar, man cave or perhaps a breakfast bar window for lazy Sunday mornings?... Built to suit a bar 900mm tall, the footrests accomodate even the vertically challenged and the old school seats while minimalist hug your bum and are amazingly comfortable! Come to Subiaco and grab a craft beer from Otherside Brewing and take them for a test drive, or feel free to contact us!

04.01.2022 When the Ugly Duckling Team were kids, log hollows inspired an almost mystical sense of wonder. The possibilities of what could live within them sparked the imagination, frogs, lizards, snakes or just fantastical insects. Now we are all grown up these logs still spark that imagination in our adult minds. These Tuart logs are naturally hollowed by rot and termites (long gone). We found them scavenging a Neighbours monster firewood pile for furniture logs. Initially Yours Trul...y put them aside to repurpose as bird nests and native animal homes, but then we realised the potential to inspire childhood wonder in others. We pressure washed the dirt and muck, then sanded the outside and lovingly wire brushed the inside to preserve the detail. After four coats of Beeswax and Carnauba wax we filled the hollows with Edison Globes to give them a warming glow. Fitted out with brass lamp holders to match the timber and coloured fabric cord these are a stunning addition to any home looking for warm timber vibes or a natural element. They are perfect for a room or floor lamp, or even a feature nursery nightlight. With four totally unique lamps to choose from we are sure to have the perfect addition to your home. Cord colours are Navy Blue, Blush Pink, Black and Pea Green. Asking price is $250.

04.01.2022 It was a momentous day for the team at Ugly Duckliing today! We got the Lucas Mill processing for for the first time, and we think your all going to love the results! We started slow with end grain cutting, and produced some unbelievable coffee table biscuits and logs! With diameters up to a meter and most cut to thicknesses around 20-30cm these will make amazing centerpieces for a room. ... Watch this space as we transform these into beautiful tables. Also, if you would like to make your own work of art please contact us. We supply not only finished product but the raw timber, semi processed, or whatever level of finish you desire.

02.01.2022 The Ugly Duckling Team wants to say a massive thank-you to Katrina from Evergreen Leaders Family Daycare for sharing some amazing photos of out products in her centre! Katrina came to us originally for a set of Nature Play Stools, and after some discussion she gave us creative licence to make her a bench and kids table. We created the bench with a Yellow Stingy Bark slab cap mounted on Tuart logs, and the 'Magic Mushroom' was a large Tuart biscuit mounted on a unique log. We ...finished all the items in Organoil plant based furniture oil for protection and easy maintenance. If you would like a unique piece of furniture for your home or if you are interested in Nature Play themed items please get in touch!

02.01.2022 At Ugly Duckling nothing makes us happier than a happy customer - except when customers share some of our (and their!) creations so we can see it in its new home. Thanks to Fab, Isaac, Dee, Acacia, Kelley and Cate for sharing over the last six months. We are so glad you're happy with your items! If you've recently purchased something from us and would like to share a photo or two we'd love to see them!

01.01.2022 We have been busy at ‘Ugly Duckling’ end grain cutting on the Lucas Mill. As you all know we love the different and non-traditional cuts of timber and Yours Truly has a special place in my heart for ‘Peanuts!’ When the trunk branches it creates amazing tree ring patterns in the timber, and we think two hearts are always better than one! For a couple of months we have been salvaging for and storing these logs, and now we can finally crack them open and see the timber in it’s... true glory! After cutting we just give them a splash of water to highlight the grain and get a look at the true timer colour. With a huge demand for thin cut boards we are proud to say we finally have some stock! We have a large stock of 40mm and 50mm thick slices of dry Tuart. Perfect for charcuterie boards, cake boards and wedding centerpieces! These are cut perfectly level on the mill (no hillbilly chainsaw cutting!) If you are interested in the raw timber product, semi processed or for us to make you an amazing one off coffee table please send us a message!

01.01.2022 They say ‘One mans trash is another ones treasure - add a small dash of creativity and that’s how this little project started! During Hard Rubbish a couple of months ago in Two Rocks, Yours Truly drove past a wire-wheel that had been abandoned to the rubbish. Probably a fair call considering it’s condition! It was a little too good to leave behind so onto the trailer it went... It’s been sitting in the paddock until we were tasked with creating a ‘Fairy Garden’ for the u...pcoming Welcome to The Otherside activation in Subiaco. So after a little structural reinforcement, we served an eviction notice on the 8 legged tenants, and gave it a sand down to remove any tetanus risk, and it was ready for Katie to work her magic! We hope this ignites little imaginations and inspires some joy and wonder for those who enter our little corner of the activation! Please come check us out! Dates, location and details in the pics!
