25.01.2022 Last week we saw a pretty powerful example of the GOOD THINGS that can happen when students combine their wellbeing knowledge with leadership skills. The 4 school captains at Joeys Aberdeen rallied their 40 Year 12 peers to participate in the Vinnies Sleepout aiming to raise $2000 for the 17,000 young people who sleep homeless in NSW every night. They blew that goal right out of the water!! They raised more than $13,000 & became the biggest fundraising school for the V...innies Sleepover in the state!!! The wellbeing impact of this effort has rippled right across the community. The captains Aneira Bray, Meg Southcombe, Kelly Harris and Zac Cadalbert are still on a high, amazed by what they can accomplish. All the Year 12 students who joined the sleepover felt the buzz that comes with being part of bigger than yourself. Parents of children involved in the sleepout are enormously proud , all the businesses who donated felt the warmth that comes with giving to others & then the homeless, the ultimate beneficiaries, are boosted by knowing that people care & through improved access to basic housing needs. None of that was an accident! One of the organisers, Meg Southcombe, says that the combination of their wellbeing & leadership education allowed them to maximise the impact of their event. We wanted to use our positive wellbeing to help the wellbeing of others. We are just bursting with pride & have this huge satisfaction of doing something for the greater good of others. We never really knew how much it takes to organise an event like this but that’s where we really drew on the skills we learnt through the WTAW leadership program. We had to switch up our communication styles & we were pushed outside of our comfort zones doing things like getting publicity in local media and talking with businesses but we realised we had the skills to approach different people and to lean in to those relationships. We expect we’ll be reporting on many more episodes like this as empowered students continue to effect positive change as the Visible Wellbeing & Student Leadership programs that WTAW fund become even more entrenched in our schools. 24.01.2022 While it might’ve been cold outside today, there was nothing but warmth and good vibes between 111 Year 10 & Year 11 students from our five high schools today. They gathered at St Joseph’s Aberdeen for the Upper Hunter Leadership Summit which was designed and delivered by the 20 students WTAW sent to the National Student Leadership Summit in Adelaide earlier this year. Working to a theme of ‘Lean in, Learn, Lead’ the aim of the day was to develop leadership skills among...st all those attending so they can return to their schools motivated and capable of creating and implementing initiatives that enhance mental health and wellbeing for their peers. They didn’t shy away from the big issues that they face as teenagers and valuable connections were made. It was powerful. It was inspiring. And the future is in good hands! Here’s just some of what the kids themselves had to say about it: It’s so good to have it run by students because they can connect on our level they understand what we feel. The interaction with people from other schools and from other grades was great. Finding new people and new friends gives you a sense of achievement. We discussed our leadership qualities, we connected with people who shared our same character strengths and we discussed some really heavy stuff. I’ve got more of an open mind now and I see the power of communication. It opens you up to other people’s lives and their experiences. It’s not just yourself you’re worried about, it’s also other people. We’re from a very small school and we don’t always have the strength and confidence to stand up so I’m hoping that we’ll grow as people. Standby for more updates on all the wonderful things these kids will make happen in our schools!! Our thanks to our Student Leadership group who did such a brilliant job making it all happen and to Lindy Hunt who is the driving force behind this important work. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter #communityspirit #studentleadership See more
24.01.2022 Today at SJM, we are celebrating National Positive Education Day dressed in our colourful threads. Your eyes are blasted with bright colours, smiles and positiv...e vibes everywhere you look! We are loving all of the outfits, and the efforts that have gone into putting them together. This year’s theme is From Strength to Strength in Tough Times, and throughout the day students will be focusing on character strengths and how they have helped them get through a difficult year. Although the Coronavirus pandemic has thrown some enormous challenges at us this year, through tough times we learn, develop resilience, and grow. What 'strength superpower' have you used this year? As a school community we have raised a total of $820.80. This donation will be applied towards supporting disadvantaged schools and their communities to undertake a journey of Positive Education and wellbeing. In 2020, this will be done by providing scholarships to teachers to attend the 2021 PESA National Wellbeing in Education Conference. #learnlaughandhavefunatSJM
22.01.2022 The Godolphin Flying Start programme is a two year management training programme for the best and brightest young minds from around the world who have been identified as potential leaders of the thoroughbred industry. They are currently spending time at Godolphin’s Kelvinside Stud at Aberdeen and on Sunday afternoon they rolled into Sporties Scone and surprised our Student Leaders at their end of year presentation. We’re not quite sure who was more impressed by the experience.... The student leaders were certainly blown away by the fact that people from as far afield as Ireland and Japan cared enough about what’s happening here in our Upper Hunter high schools to give them their time (the day after their Christmas party no less!). On the flip side, the Flying Start contingent were equally blown away by the mental health and wellbeing initiatives our student leaders have created and the leadership skills they are demonstrating to implement them in our schools. Both groups spoke about the importance of relationships to good wellbeing and needless to say there was much exchanging of contact details so they can explore ways to assist each other going forward. Godolphin is another of the major organisations in the Upper Hunter that is not only providing financial support to help WTAW improve mental health and wellbeing across the Upper Hunter but is actively taking steps to improve wellbeing for their own staff. We applaud you and we thankyou! 22.01.2022 A super explanation about how Positive Education is working in our Upper Hunter schools from just one of the teachers leading the way in this regard .
22.01.2022 Earlier in the year when we were all in lockdown WTAW invited people from across the Upper Hunter to create a patchwork square that showcased something good about our area because looking for positives is one way to stay mentally healthy during challenging times. We’re pleased to report that we had a great response and the squares have been patched together and the result is some BEAUTIFUL wall hangings. They will be officially unveiled during a morning tea at Fresh Denman next Wednesday 11 November at 10am. If you were a contributor to these wallhangings or if you’d like to check them out, please head along to the unveiling.we’d love to see you!
22.01.2022 The crew from the Lazy G Bucking Bulls Futurity have been big supporters of ours from the very beginning and last month they raised another $4k for our work. If all those bulls knew the difference they are making to the mental health and wellbeing of children in the Upper Hunter community, we think they’d be pretty damn pleased with themselves!!! Our sincere thanks to all the organisers who helped make this happen. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter #communityspirit #buckingbulls

19.01.2022 Our whole hearted congratulations to The Yellow Cottage Scone Grammar School which this week has become one of only 43 pre-schools in Australia to be awarded an ‘Excellent Rating’ by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority. We are not remotely surprised by this achievement because the team at The Yellow Cottage has been a driving force behind the creation of the Strengths Stars Framework - a Positive Education model developed specifically for pre-sch...ools and early learning centres to enhance student wellbeing. Director Kirsty Hails has worked with Professor Lea Waters from Melbourne University on this initiative which teaches students about their character strengths how to understand their own and those of people around them. This commitment to building wellbeing from an early age contributes significantly to learning in childhood and throughout life. Other pre-schools and early learning centres from across the Upper Hunter have embraced this model and are working together to ensure children from as young as three are given the best possible foundations to thrive and flourish. This is a great thing for our children and our community! Well done to all the teachers at The Yellow Cottage and the families that have supported their approach to education. #positiveeducation #wellbeing #mentalhealth #upperhunter

17.01.2022 A nice little snap to take you into the weekend..... These are the Principals of schools in the Upper Hunter this morning on one of their regular zoom calls, working together to improve wellbeing and mental health for students in their care. This level of collaboration between Principals from public, private and Catholics schools is critical to the success of Where there’s a Will and we are very grateful for their commitment to the Positive Education programmes they are delivering . #upperhunter #wellbeing #mentalhealth #positiveeducation #communityspirit
16.01.2022 Just chipping away.: today year 10 students at St Joseph's High School, Aberdeen completed their training in Teen Mental Health First Aid. WTAW began providing this training to all five Upper Hunter high schools four years ago. We are now in a position where EVERY student will have received this education before they graduate. Imagine the difference this knowledge will make to the workplaces, families and communities of the future.!! #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter
16.01.2022 We think this guy was born to be a Wellbeing Superspreader, so today we’re very pleased to introduce ‘The Tradie’ Rod ‘Rocket’ Bailey. A father of three boys (Linus, Felix & Noah ) Rocket is a larrikin with a heart of gold that would do anything to help anyone. He could be the most laidback hardworker out there and even though he clocks long hours running a plumbing business, many people across town know Rocket is only a phone call away if they’re ever in need of a ha...nd or a chat. An Upper Hunter local, he has a network of family and friends that gets bigger with every activity his family is involved in. Whether it’s Scone Grammar, Yellow Cottage, , touch, rugby union, rugby league, , cricket or Cross Fit, Rocket and his wife Nicky (a book keeper and Cross Fit coach) will be there ready to help and happy to help. Don’t forget to follow Scone Wellbeing Superspreaders to keep track of Rocket and our nine other Superspreaders as they work to create a contagion of wellbeing across Scone. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #wellbeingsuperspreader #upperhunter #scone #communityspiritp See more

14.01.2022 Hi everyone! We’re baaaaaack and we’ve got some VERY EXCITING NEWS. In 2021 WTAW will embark on a new adventure that is aiming to create an outbreak of wellbeing by releasing ten Wellbeing Superspreaders into the Scone community. These Superspreaders are all Scone identities and could be your neighbour, your workmate.they could even be your father! And they’ll be doing their best to ensure you are infected. ... If this pilot project in Scone proves successful, it is our hope that the contagion will spread to other towns across the Upper Hunter and beyond, doing our best to create a ‘herd immunity’ against mental ill health. We’ll be revealing the names of these Superspreaders from next Monday 18 January, and to find out who they are you’ll need to head to Scone Wellbeing Superspreaders or follow them on Instagram account: wellbeing_superspreaders. In the meantime, they’ll be known by their code names: The Quiet Achiever , The Scientist, The Carer, The Livewire, The Supercoach, The Drake, The Cowboy, The Elder Statesman, The Big Unit & The Tradie. Over the next few months we’ll be asking residents of Scone to monitor the Superspreaders for the following signs and symptoms: greater happiness better relationships less stress and improved coping in the workplace improved physical health Regular updates will be provided @sconewellbeingsuperspreaders, so we’re asking you to jump across and start following the action now! And if we’re going to achieve real contagion, we’ll need you to get your friends following it too, so spread the word... ! #wellbeing #mentalhealth #communityspirit #scone
12.01.2022 You might remember earlier in the year there were a group of kids who held a cake stall hoping to corner the market with all the snow chasers heading to the Barrington Tops, donating proceeds to WTAW.? Well..the money they raised has come full circle and has helped fund perpetual WTAW Character Strengths Shields for primary schools in the Upper Hunter. The award recognises students who know their strengths and use them on a regular basis, who work hard to develop strengt...hs that don’t come naturally and who spot strengths in others and encourage them to be their best. We’re so delighted to share the winners of these Strengths Shields and congratulate them all on their commitment to developing skills that will help them thrive and flourish throughout their lives. We’ve also sincerely appreciated notes from parents of recipients detailing how much this has meant to them and to their child. It’s been donated by Max & Paula Hayne from ‘Carlisle’ Moonan who place it up there with one of their best crops ever, and Max says: ‘Like most families, our family has faced challenges with mental health and that’s why we’ve donated. 11.01.2022 Another day, another Scone champion stepping up to help create an outbreak of wellbeing in town.today we welcome Courtney ‘The Carer’ Wicks . Any way you look at it, this proud Indigenous Woman from the Bundjalung Nation is doing her best to make our town a better place; whether it’s via her work as a Clinical Support officer at Scone Hospital, the care she provided through a long association with the Scone branch of the Australian Breast Feeding Association or the sup...port role she plays in the community through the Anglican Church . She’s the long-term secretary of the Scone Public School P&C and her husband Darren, who works as a rural contractor, is president. She’s the odd one out in her family when it comes to horses all others are enthusiastic members of the Scone Team Penning association. She’s a weekly attendee at Scone’s Zumba lessons and is a shining light with her personal training crew .!! If you haven’t seen her at any of those places, you might also spot her supporting her son James at Scone Grammar or playing rugby for Scone Brumbies and daughters Isla-Rose and Neve at dance and touch football. Don’t forget to follow Scone Wellbeing Superspreaders so you can monitor Courtney and all our other Wellbeing Spreaders for the signs and symptoms of wellbeing. 10.01.2022 Crofts Pies, our rivers, our horse studs, our birds, our neighbours, our friendships, the Aberdeen Tigers, the Murrurundi Community Group, our volunteers, our emergency workers, our families and our beautiful country roads are just a few of the things represented in patchwork squares created during the COVID-19 lock down earlier this year. The squares have now been turned into these wonderful wall hangings and serve as a reminder of all the things that we have to be grateful... for as residents of the Upper Hunter. WTAW initiated the project because looking for positives no matter how big or small - in the world around us and expressing gratitude for what we have is fundamental to wellbeing and good mental health. We’re absolutely thrilled with the results and we hope you are too! The wallhangings will travel around the Upper Hunter between now and Christmas, dates and venues are listed below. When you see them in the shop windows in your town we hope you’ll admire them and we hope they’ll make you feel good!!! Our thanks to all those who contributed to this project. 08.01.2022 This is 72 year old retired farrier Brian Atfield from Jerry’s Plains. Three years ago if someone was feeling a bit low or down in the dumps his response would’ve been something like this: You just need a good kick up the bum, get over it and get going. And then he did Mental Health First Aid training funded by WTAW . I just got so much out of it. The course just totally changed my way of thinking. There’s things I can pick up on now that I had no idea about before. I ...know how to respond better. Things have sat with me for 40 years that I know I didn’t pick up on at the time, it all just went straight over my head. Now, this bloke who’s spent a lifetime looking at horses hooves, is in the process of putting in grant applications for funding so that more can benefit from this training. What. A. Champion And he wants men in particular to step up. When I did the course there were 18 women in the room and 2 men . That’s got to change. Males find it very hard to talk to people but if we can get more doing this training it’s going to make a difference. I just got so much out of it and I’d like to keep it going. We’re sharing Brian’s story because the next round of Mental Health First Aid training is coming up in Scone on Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 June (9am-3pm both days) and we’d love to see as many people as possible Be Like Brian!!!!!! Our Wellbeing Superspreaders will be following his lead, learning about the signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to help those in need of assistance. To register for the training in Scone, please email: [email protected]. We’ll also be sharing details of the training that Brian is organising when they are finalised. Standby!! Click on the link below if you’d like to hear more details on why Brian found the course so valuable. https://www.2nm.com.au//7864430-brian-/hunter-valley-today Please also give a thumbs up for Brian as a sign of appreciation for the initiative he is showing to improve mental health outcomes in our community!!! #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter #mentalhealthfirstaid
08.01.2022 It’s donation tiiiiime and if you’re able to spare a few dollars we’ve got a few things we need a hand with this year. On our priority list is funding Teen Mental Health First Aid training for all Year 8 students in the five Upper Hunter high schools and funding a teacher from every primary and secondary school in the Upper Hunter to attend the Positive Education Schools Association (PESA) annual conference in Sydney. With research showing that peers are the first port ...of call for teenagers struggling with mental health issues Teen Mental Health Training is a vital part of what we do. In our dream world we’d like to see it incorporated as a compulsory part of the school curriculum, but until that happens we’ll be relying on the Upper Hunter community to show how much we value it by funding it ourselves. Let’s do it !!!! The PESA conference gives teachers the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of wellbeing science and how to apply it in our schools, it gives them exposure to best practice and it creates connections between our schools that ensure students from pre-school through to Year 12 share a common language when it comes to mental health and wellbeing . Every dollar counts, so feel free to send something.....anything.....everything .......our way. All donations are tax deductible, payment details are below: https://www.paypal.com/donate
08.01.2022 Merry Christmas and happy New Year from all the crew at Where there’s a Will! We hope our special Christmas video in the link below gives you hope and inspiration for what the future holds! https://uhwheretheresawill.com.au #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter #communityspirit

06.01.2022 Now that’s the Christmas period is settling down, we finally got the opportunity to catch up with Jacob JP Electrical & Maintenance PTY LTD who handed over a bank cheque of $1200 from the raffle of the signed & framed paramatta jersey. This wouldn’t have been made possible without the help from Bengalla Mining Company and all the people that have jumped on board to help. We would also like to thank Andrew Davey for organising the jersey side of things. Although he’s not in p...arramatta colours anymore we wish him the best of luck for the upcoming season ahead with the mighty Manly Warringah Sea Eagles It’s great to see the support for the community is still as strong as ever
06.01.2022 Well this email landed on WTAW screens recently and sure put a pep in our steps . It sums up beautifully the shift that is taking place in the Upper Hunter when it comes to mental health and wellbeing. We all know kids can be exhausting with their non-stop talking and endless bounds of energy; but sometimes they say something that really takes you by surprise. It is then that you realise that they really are little sponges. This happened last week when myself, my husband ...and 4 kids where driving in the car on our way to our squash grand final. Jaxon, my second son who is 7, asked my husband who he was playing in the grand final. My husband answered him, and then Jaxon turned to me and asked the same question. I replied with, I’m not playing tonight in the grand final because I haven’t been playing very well. I only won 1 game all season. To this he replied, That’s ok mum, you have the character strength of resilience so you will learn from losing all those games, and you have a growth mindset, so you know you will be able to do better next time. My husband and I had no words and glanced at each other in utter shock. Who was this child and what has he done with our Jaxon? When my brain finally registered what he said, we then chatted for the rest of the trip about what growth mindset was and some of the other character strengths they all learn about. It was so enlightening to have this type of conversation with my children, especially because they all were able to have input as they all understood the language being used; even my preschoolers. Just goes to show that a little bit of mental health awareness goes a long way; and I would like to thank all those dedicated people in the community and our schools that make that possible. Hopefully this should keep us all a little motivated to keep doing what we’re doing and if you have a similar story, we’d love to hear about it! #mentalhealth #wellbeing #upperhunter #communityspirit
