25.01.2022 Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham recently said Australias international borders are likely to remain closed until the end of the year, preventing our ability to present any international artists in 2020. For the first time since opening in 2015, we will have an entire concert season without our flagship weekend event: UKARIA 24 will not take place on Friday 16Sunday 18 October this year. Three international artists were set to be joining us for this special event Lawrenc...e Power (curator/viola/violin), Torleif Theden (cello) and Simon Crawford-Phillips (piano) along with students from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). The good news is that we are currently working with all the musicians to reschedule the event to 2021 unchanged: where possible, the line up and program will remain the same. The weekend we have currently flagged as a possibility is Friday 24Sunday 26 September 2021. To our patrons who have already booked tickets to any of the concerts, or a Weekend Pass, we encourage you to keep your tickets, as they will automatically be transferred over to the new date as soon as it is confirmed. As always, youll also have the option to log in to your account at any time and request a full refund, a gift voucher credit valid until 31 December 2022, or gift your tickets back to UKARIA as a tax-deductible donation. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact us on (08) 8227 1277 or at [email protected].

24.01.2022 Those of you who had booked tickets for the Archie Roach and Paul Grabowsky concert at UKARIA (originally scheduled for Saturday 28 March) should by now have received an email from us giving you the option to obtain a full refund, or a gift voucher credit (valid until 31 Dec 2022), or the option to gift your ticket as a tax-deductible donation to UKARIA. If youd like to support Archie and Paul through this difficult time, please consider purchasing Archies memoir Tell Me Why and its companion album, which is available online through the Archie Roach store. All proceeds will be donated to the Archie Roach Foundation. http://www.archieroach.com/merch

24.01.2022 Enjoy the colours of Autumn from the UKARIA gardens. As our gardens evolve, so does its connection with nature. The perennial plantings are attracting a larger number of butterflies and bees. We have always had a few families of our Australia Magpie that call UKARIA home, but we now have a number of blue wrens nesting in our established shrubs, that come out regularly to do their little happy dance. #ukariaculturalcentre #adelaidehillsnature #naturetourism #australianautumncolours @ Mount Barker Summit

23.01.2022 '... while we can't gather in the concert hall, we can still gather together around shared concert experiences.' We're very proud of our friends at ABC Classic, who are doing all they can to support Australian artists through this unprecedented global crisis. Every day over the coming weeks, they'll be broadcasting concert recordings from Australia and around the world including a few concerts recorded at UKARIA earlier this year. https://www.abc.net.au//keeping-the-music-going-a/12064618

22.01.2022 Few people have given as much to South Australia's cultural life as David McKee AO. A Director of UKARIA and Chair of the UKARIA Foundation, he began his career as a biochemistry student, before quickly switching over to economics. A successful forty-three years working in stockbroking and finance created a desire to give back to the community by supporting social welfare and arts organisations. In this candid profile, David shares the fascinating story of his life and legacy, revealing what motivates him to give, and how he developed his passion for music and visual art. https://mailchi.mp//ukaria-e-newsletter-giving-back-a-prof

21.01.2022 A beautiful performance of Schuberts Wanderer Fantasy from Ammiel Bushakevitz in the Berlin Konzerthaus! We have fond memories of Ammiel performing the same work for us at UKARIA back in April 2018.

20.01.2022 Taking this day to celebrate Australian music and its many, diverse makers is so important. Its clearer than ever that the arts are essential services. All of us need hope, humour, beauty, empathy, compassion particularly in our current uncertainty. For musicians, this day keeps us connected to you, our audiences. Just as critically, it helps us generate income through broadcast royalties. Our Artistic Advisor Genevieve Lacey, Chair of the Australian Music Centre, on the importance of this wonderful initiative from @ABC Classic. Tune in tomorrow to support Australian artists!

20.01.2022 Last night, UKARIA favourites Lior and Paul Grabowsky performed a beautiful set in the David Li Sound Gallery at Monash University the first in a new series of live-streamed concerts. 19.01.2022 'What does singing matter when so much is at stake? Who cares about art when people are dying? Art matters because it is one of the most ancient ways we have of forming community: telling stories, singing songs, and making sounds and images, are acts that bond us together as human beings. More than this, these acts can teach us something about our place in a complex and fragile ecosystem, a web of life. [...] Art matters now because it demonstrates, as it always has, that there are ways of being in the world, and things we can make in the world, that might be an alternative to commodity production.' Beautifully lucid and wise writing from Anwen Crawford in The Monthly.

19.01.2022 The Ukaria Cultural Centre has been incredibly accommodating, and we are very excited to still be able to plan our play reading of Beecham for later this year. ...We have rescheduled the June show to 2pm on Sunday 27 September 2020. For those of you who have already purchased tickets, they will be transferred to the new date. Stay tuned for more updates as September draws closer!

19.01.2022 Some of our patrons may remember Quatuor Ébène's magnificent debut performance in Australia last year, as part of their 'Beethoven Around the World' tour. We're so fortunate to have been able to present them at UKARIA on Monday 28 October 2019 an event that now seems even more special given the current COVID-19 crisis. You can listen to them on ABC Classic, performing music by Brahms, Dutilleux and Beethoven at the 2019 Verbier Festival in Switzerland. https://www.abc.net.au//ebene-quarete-verbier-fes/11934410

18.01.2022 We welcome Bethany Hill and Penelope Cashman to UKARIA for two performances, Friday and Saturday night. Head to the link below for bookings.

16.01.2022 Last week, the Australia Council for the Arts announced the latest recipients of our residency program for 2020. Australian clarinettist Aviva Endean will head to UKARIA in November to use her residency to explore further collaboration with cross-cultural ensemble The Cloud Maker. The second artistic group is comprised of composer Wally Gunn and librettist Maria Zajkowski who will create their second major collaborative work at UKARIA in December. The residency recipients will have exclusive access to UKARIA including the state-of-the-art auditorium and Twin Peaks accomodation facilities adjacent to the Mount Barker Summit, as well as financial support to asst with the development of their new works.

15.01.2022 It's wonderful to see the easing of restrictions and the extremely low numbers of COVID-19 cases in South Australia. Today the Premier Steven Marshall announced that South Australia's borders will reopen on 20 July, and gatherings of up to 75 will be permitted by next Friday, with stage-three restrictions lifting by the end of the month. There will no longer be any limit on the number of indoor gatherings from July 29, provided that the venue holds no more than one person per... four square metres at all times. UKARIA's auditorium measures a total of 240 square metres, which will give us a maximum capacity of 60 people (including the artists). Whilst this is very exciting and encouraging news, it will still be some time before we are able to return to our full capacity of 220. Our cultural program will therefore remain on hold until 30 September. Of the concerts scheduled to take place between July and October, ten involve international artists who have no viable way of travelling to Australia. The remaining four concerts consist of collaborations between artists who currently reside in different states, making it impossible for them to rehearse. Many of you are probably wondering what this means for the tickets you've purchased. To see a full list of the concerts we're hoping to reschedule, and those that sadly won't be going ahead, please visit our website: https://www.ukaria.com/events/1444 We thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate the significant challenges of reorganising almost an entire year's worth of artistic planning. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us on (08) 8227 1277, or at [email protected].

13.01.2022 We are thrilled to announce that leading Australian theatre producer, festival director and cultural programmer Rob Brookman AM has been appointed Chair of UKARIA, following his retirement from the role of Executive Director at the Adelaide Festival. David Minns, who has been Chair since December 2011, recently completed his term. We thank him for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of UKARIA, particularly during the construction of the Cultural Centre.... Rob has an almost unrivalled forty-five years of experience working in the arts. He has held leadership positions in a number of Australasias foremost festivals and performing arts organisations, including the Adelaide Festival (Administrator, Associate Director, Artistic Director, Executive Director), Adelaide Festival Centre (Programming Director, Producer, Artistic Director), National Festival of Australian Theatre (Artistic Director), New Zealand International Festival of Arts (Artistic Director), Arts Projects Australia (Founding Co-Director), Sydney Theatre Company (General Manager) and State Theatre Company South Australia. He couldnt be joining us at a more crucial time, as we navigate the challenges of a post-COVID-19 world. You can find out more about the appointment in an interview feature in which Rob reflects on his long and illustrious career, discusses his alignment with UKARIA, and considers where we might be heading in the future. https://www.ukaria.com//In%20Conversation%20with%20Rob%20B

13.01.2022 Like all venues around the country, UKARIA must play its part in continuing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Today we announce the Cultural Centre will remain closed until 30 June. As a result, all concerts and events until that date have been cancelled. Whilst we are very disappointed these performances will not go ahead, the health and safety of our audience, artists and staff is our first priority. If you have booked tickets to any of our concerts within this perio...d, you will receive an email from us with instructions on how to obtain a full refund, or a credit for our 2021 and/or 2022 Seasons. You will also be offered should you wish the opportunity to gift your ticket as a tax-deductible donation. We are planning to reschedule as many of these concerts as possible, and to support our artists with half payment of their fees now, and the balance after their rescheduled performance. Sadly, there will be some artists and ensembles we wont be able to reschedule particularly those who are part of a national or international tour. In such cases, we will pay 25% of their fees as a gift. We will use the funds generously donated by our patrons to support this initiative.

11.01.2022 Over the past few years, pianist and writer Anna Goldsworthy took time out from her busy concert schedule to work on her first novel in residence at UKARIA. In her moving, captivating fiction debut, Anna recreates Adelaide and Melbourne half a century ago, bringing a family to life as they move through the decades, challenging and caring and loving one another, often in surprising ways. Charming and sharply observed, Melting Moments is a gentle powerhouse. https://www.blackincbooks.com.au/books/melting-moments

11.01.2022 perhaps its time we all started buying music again. Buy tracks, buy an album. Streaming services dont pay musicians properly, but you can. An album a week? An album a month? [] This is the moment to do it. Its not hard to track down musicians we all have websites. An email of appreciation wont pay a musicians rent, but it might help convince them to keep going. Some great advice from Andrew Ford on how to support artists through these challenging times.

11.01.2022 Its hard to believe over four months have passed since our last live performance at UKARIA in the Adelaide Festival. Although our cultural program remains on hold until 30 September, were delighted to announce a new partnership with the Australian String Quartet: ASQ Live at UKARIA. The eight-week series (Sunday 2 AugustSunday 20 September) is comprised of six studio-audience experiences (live-streamed across Australia and around the world) and two full-length concert e...xperiences on Sunday afternoons at 3.00pm. As COVID-19 venue restrictions remain in place, we are offering a very limited number of tickets to each performance. Head to our website for tickets and more information: https://www.ukaria.com/events/

10.01.2022 In light of the recent COVID-19 outbreak and new restrictions in South Australia, we have decided to postpone the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s UKARIA Festival to Saturday 9Sunday 10 October 2021. We know this news will be as disappointing to you as it is to us: we were really hoping to finish the year on a high, and to welcome you all back to UKARIA for our biggest event of the year. Sadly, it was not to be, but we are incredibly grateful to the ACO for being so accommodat...ing and committing to the new dates. We hope that, by October 2021, it will be safe for the event to proceed perhaps even at a greater capacity than what we’ve had for the majority of this year. If you’ve already purchased a Weekend Pass or a single ticket to the Nordic Noir concert, it will remain valid for the new dates, and has automatically been transferred over (this also includes any tickets purchased for the Alfresco Brunch, Three-Course Dinner and/or Two-Course Lunch). No further action is required, however if you would prefer to receive a full refund, or to convert your ticket(s) to a gift voucher (valid until 31 December 2022), please phone us on (08) 8227 1277 during office hours, or email [email protected].

10.01.2022 In light of the new COVID-19 restrictions in South Australia, the concerts featuring Timo-Veikko Valve and Konstantin Shamray on Sunday 29 November will be postponed. We are currently negotiating a new date with the artists, and will be in contact with ticket holders as soon as we know more. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this challenging time. If you have purchased tickets, they will remain valid for the new date and no further action is req...uired, however if you would prefer to receive a full refund, or to convert your ticket(s) to a gift voucher (valid until 31 December 2022), please phone us on (08) 8227 1277 during office hours, or email us at [email protected]. These options will also be available to you upon the announcement of the new date, should you not be able to attend. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. See more

09.01.2022 This weekend marks five years since the UKARIA Cultural Centre officially opened to the public. Thanks to the extraordinary vision of our Founder Ulrike Klein AO and the outstanding leadership of our CEO Alison Beare, weve seen some of the worlds greatest artists pass through our doors. Weve expanded our cultural program to include new genres such as jazz, contemporary and world music. Weve commissioned and premiered new works, and developed our residency program with the Australia Council, renovating our Twin Peaks artist accommodation and building a new rehearsal space to give us even greater flexibility in the future. 08.01.2022 Last year, internationally acclaimed British violinist Tasmin Little made classical music headlines with her annoucement to withdraw from the concert stage from 2020. We were privileged to have her perform at UKARIA one last time with pianist Timothy Young on Sunday 23 February. Together they played works by Kreisler, Bach, Brahms, Prt and Beethoven.

05.01.2022 Following the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions in South Australia, were delighted to be able to open our gardens and alfresco to the public each Wednesday, beginning next week on 3 June. You can come up and enjoy a walk through the gardens, and a cup of barista coffee and cake in our alfresco, between one of two time slots: 9.3011.30am, or 12.002.00pm. 03.01.2022 Statement on COVID-19 (Coronavirus): It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce UKARIA Cultural Centre will be temporarily closed until Thursday 30 April. As a result, four upcoming performances at UKARIA have been cancelled: Archie Roach and Paul Grabowsky (Saturday 28 March); Tinalley String Quartet with John Bell (Sunday 5 April, 2.30pm and 6.00pm); and The Australian Voices (Sunday 19 April). Whilst we are very disappointed these performances will not go ahead, t...he health and safety of our audience, artists and staff is our first priority. If you have booked tickets to any of the concerts listed above, we will email you within the next few days to arrange a full refund, or a credit for our 2021 and/or 2022 Seasons. You will also be offered should you wish the opportunity to gift your ticket as a tax-deductible donation to UKARIA. This will be used to help support artists through this immensely challenging and uncertain time. Around Australia and the world, artists and arts organisations are reckoning with the impact of this unprecedented global crisis. Artists are now facing the harrowing reality of having little or no income for the foreseeable future, as concert halls and public spaces around the country shut their doors. Over the coming months, we will continue to monitor the situation closely, and communicate regular updates (via email, social media and our website) as the situation develops. In the meantime, please stay safe and well, and we look forward to seeing you all back at UKARIA later in the year. Alison Beare CEO

02.01.2022 Just a little bit of fun from the seriousness of social distancing.

01.01.2022 In an effort to raise awareness for the challenges artists are currently facing around the world during the COVID-19 crisis, Daniel Barenboim and Emmanuel Pahud have curated Distance / Intimacy A Festival of New Music, inviting ten of todays most exciting composers to engage with the unusual situation with new works juxtaposed with pieces by Pierre Boulez, hosted live by Barenboim and Pahud from the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin. The musicians and composers have all gene...rously donated their time and work as a call to common solidarity to encourage donations to initiatives that help musicians and other artists through these difficult times. Among the partners already supporting the project are the Philharmonie de Paris, Britten Pears Arts, Bergen International Festival, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, UKARIA, and others. You can watch the stream of the first concert below, or tune in at 6.00pm Central European Time (1.30am Adelaide time) to watch the live broadcasts tonight, and on Saturday and Sunday night this weekend. We encourage you to stand in solidarity with us, the Pierre Boulez Saal, and artists around the world by putting some time aside over the weekend to have a listen to how some of the worlds greatest musicians and composers are responding to the unique challenges of our time. #KeepCultureAlive #NewMusicFestival
