23.01.2022 Make Home Hill your Home Don’t you just love getting this message on your phone Your call is important to us. Had a bad experience a couple of weeks ago.... I got a letter in regard some work that was to be done in the township of Home Hill. The letter stated that should I need more information in regard to this work I was to call this number, which I did. After a lot of toing and froing I got to the person whose name was on the letter. The person was quite friendly. When I referred to the letter that I had received, I was told they were in no position to answer my question, but promised to get back to me after consulting with someone higher up on the food chain, but guess what after three weeks I’m still hanging. My point is that sheer ignorance and bad manners are no excuse. I’m asking, Why send the letter in the first place if they were not prepared to address some simple questions? Is this just done to stuff up my day or is this done to fill in their day? What they are saying? Go away we are too busy, your problem or question is just not important enough, and it seems the top end of these business/organisations are just too busy to answer some lowly question which they requested in the first place. While I’m on the band wagon about service, I left a message and then a text on their phone and hopeing for a response which I will never receive or maybe if and when they are good and ready and then it will be too late. A sensible and easy fix would be a simple reply within a reasonable time frame gee is this asking too much Bad manners, when it comes from the people in management are not good. === These are my personal views only. 23.01.2022 Council Elections The Council elections will be held on the 28th March, please check out the candidates and choose carefully because whoever you pick will be with you for the next four years. Ratepayers Matter... Let me say Ratepayers do matter, because you and I pay rates and I think we want a voice in determining where rate money should be spent. At present I represent the people of the Burdekin without exception. I will keep asking the difficult questions - and every now and then I will hear the answer I’m looking for. I will again put my hand up to try and do a difficult job in the sense of getting small problems solved in an acceptable time. Essential Jobs We should look at the next four years where Council should concentrate only on essential jobs and keeping rates at current CPI rate. When it comes to essential services and getting priorities right. I’m talking about the smaller jobs such as clean drains. Workable drainage is a big problem all over the Burdekin shire and if this means council needs to employ more labour so be it. Some ratepayers are still waiting forty years on at the expense of other larger follies to get channel and curbing so that they might get out of their driveway. A reliable safe clean water supply with adequate water pressure which is extremely important, without water we as a community cease to exist. A sewerage system that is maintained and water proof from external water intrusion is an ongoing job and not an easy fix but it needs to be done now. Safe all-weather country line marked roads which could have the potential to save lives. All the above matter because it affects the quality of our daily lives Home Hill Industrial Estate? Do we need an industrial estate in Home Hill? I would say yes, if we hope to have any growth on this side of the river, growth means jobs and jobs mean people? Minimise Outside Contractors Keep the local work force employed with minimum outside contractors, as the shire needs the money to be spent here in the Burdekin. These are my personal views only. 21.01.2022 Newsletter 63 - December 2020 A small crowd gathered for Remembrance Day in Home Hill. Let's clean up the Tenth Avenue Park. More on Pigeon Droppings on the Footpath and enforcement.... Finally have a Happy Christmas and a Safe New Year. === Remembrance Day Remembrance Day in Home Hill had a small crowd both young and old to pay homage to the fallen in World War One. There was a noticeable absence of Council officials. Thumbs down on this one. === Tenth Avenue Park A lot of money is spent on parks throughout the shire, and it shows as they all look clean, green, and tidy. In other words, they are a credit to the staff that look after them. So, what is wrong with the small park in Tenth Avenue? It’s brown and has the best crop of bullheads in the Burdekin. Let’s find a few extra dollars in the budget and clean it up so that it can be used. === Pigeon Droppings on the Footpath In reference to the newspaper article - I agree with Councillor Boccalatte that there should be no pigeon droppings on the footpath and I agree property owners should maintain their premises to an acceptable and aesthetic look. To fix this problem council has adopted or will adopt amendments (article in newspaper) to be able to take action against offending landlords who may well be absentee owners. How will this be enforced? To clean or carry out maintenance of a footpath could place a person at risk from passing traffic. When considering control measures such as road or footpath closures, advice and approvals should be obtained from relevant authorities, including the local council, where the work is to be conducted. Having property owners carry out works on Council Property is risky at the best of times. And more problems when hosing down the footpath who pays for the water? Footpath closure would be required. What specific insurance cover would Council provide the ratepayer under the workplace health, safety act - The Queensland code of practice was preserved as a code of practice under section 284 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. Code of Practice 2008 (PN11191) Page 10 of 28 === Happy Christmas and a Safe New Year This is the last letter of the year. I wish all readers a happy Christmas and a safe new year. Also, thanks to the many readers who got back to me with positive feedback in regard to my comments over the year. =========== These are my personal views only. 18.01.2022 Burdekinlocal There is a possibility of a new newspaper Burdekinlocal being printed in late August to service the Burdekin and beyond. I spoke with the Director and he said with the support both from the public and council it will be a goer.... === Pauline Hansen visit It was great to see a leader from one of the major political parties taking the time to visit Home Hill. The visit was from the One Nation leader Pauline Hansen, dropped into Sweet FM radio station for a bit of a talk. This lady spoke well showing a keen interest in the Burdekin and when answering questions put to her, she never steered away from the subject. Pity some of the other leaders didn’t take the time to find out where Home Hill is or better still where the Burdekin Shire is located in Queensland and have a bit of a discussion about the needs and wants of the Burdekin Shire. === Home Hill Court House In case you are wondering what is happing at the Home Hill Court House with all the scaffolding around the building - well the building is getting a major upgrade the first in many years. It was first built in 1937 and closed in 1963. The upgrade is being undertaken by WF Construction, with an employment opportunity of about 10 men over many weeks in many trades. This job includes roof cleaning, paint jobs, new gutter, down pipes and replacing all the pillars on the verandas anchoring the roof to the foundations, plus many other minor jobs. All this has been made possible with Government funding and to the tune of 100k support from the council. With this work having been carried out, this iconic building will have many years left. === Memorial Plaque Restoration A top job has been done with the assistance of council employees Chris Patrick and Wally Ford in restoring the memorial plaque (honour board) to honour the fallen in the First World War 1914 to 1919. When finished this plaque will be hung in the small meeting room at the Memorial Hall for the RSL. === These are my personal views only. You can contact me on my mobile phone or by emailing me. 15.01.2022 Newsletter 61 - October 2020 Local veggies for the travelling public and locals via honour payments. The footpath in the vicinity of the Doctors Surgery is a health hazard. We now have a new local newspaper in addition to the Home Hill News....Continue reading

10.01.2022 Newsletter 62 - November 2020 There's a lot of yellow lines in Railway Avenue. SweetFM to do training and save old radios, record players and LP collections. Government now requires for more transparent meeting agendas. ... How about repairing the forecourt at the Comfort Stop. What happened to the new Home Hill water storage facility. === Yellow Lines Small observation and wondering - do we want tourists/Grey Nomads to stop in Home Hill after noticing the many yellow lines in Railway Avenue? (See main picture) === Sweet FM The Sweet FM committee in its monthly meeting worked through a large agenda which was accepted by the committee with a lot of positive conclusions. One of the discussions was on improving the broadcasting quality with training made available to new and old broadcasters, which will be put into action ASAP. Should you have any old radios or record players or any other items that pertain to radios that are no longer needed or wanted, Sweet FM would be happy to take them off your hands to add to its collection of LP records before all is lost. This will later become a small static display for public viewing. === Improved Transparency in Council I read with great interest about the Accountability and Integrity Amendment Act 2020 for Local Government Reforms, for improved transparency in Council. Government now requires for more transparent meeting agendas and fewer matters allowed to be discussed in closed meetings, and about time. Over two terms I asked for a Hansard reporting system, that is to say everything is recorded, what is said in meetings and by who. I was always howled down, and the excuse was always "Who is going to pay for it?" But there was always money available for feasibility studies big or small. === Comfort Stop Forecourt While calling for faith in the Shire and talking about a proposed water park, how about repairing the forecourt at the Comfort Stop, which has been on the table for four years waiting for repair. === Clean Footpaths With disbelieve I read council will accept $2.5 million from Dale Last MP for a water park should the LNP achieve State government. But council will not accept a footpath sweeper worth approx $50k from the same source, obviously clean footpaths throughout the Shire are just not a priory or on the agenda === Water Storage Facilities Talking about water what has happen to the new water storage facilities next to the water tower in Home Hill? This work was to have been started early this year? As always there are probably more pressing water jobs on the north side. 10.01.2022 Election Statement March 2020 Rate payers matter. What council does affects our daily lives.... * When it comes to essential services getting priorities. * Workable well maintained drainage all over the shire. * A good safe and reliable water supply with adequate water pressure. * A sewerage system that is maintained and water proof from external water intrusion. * White line marking on drivable country roads. * What matters is all the above because they affect our daily lives. * What matters is when money is diverted and used for non-essential projects. * Infrastructure is kept in good working order and upgraded as needed. * What matters is without like-minded candidates nothing will change. My vote will be for CPI rate increase only and this includes fees and charges. 09.01.2022 News Letter 57 - June 2020 Sweet FM 97.1 The station to listen to in the Burdekin is Radio Sweet FM 97.10. ... Question: How many of you in radio land listen to our local Radio Sweet FM, broad casting out of the old court house in Home Hill? The station is run by approximately 20 volunteers who include the broadcasters and exists on paid advertisements from sponsors and the good will of the council. Question: How can the station boost listening numbers? Or better still what do you as a listener like to hear, what sort of program more music, different music, talk back shows or maybe a book read in chapter form? Let the station know because if you don’t say, how will they know? I know the station would like more advertisers as this will keep the power on. === Council Animal Control Compliment A positive for the blokes in Council Animal Control, they get the BIG THUMBS UP for collecting stray dogs off the streets in Home Hill - good job. === Council Post Hole Gang Compliment Not forgetting the pothole gang repairing holes the next day after receiving the complaint. On the down side no one is impressed by some of the road conditions on this side of the river (see picture) and this just before the start of the crushing. === Minutes of Council General Business Following on from my last letter re Council minutes I would appreciate, and I think the rest of the community likewise, if some councillor was to move a motion to get general business printed in the minutes, so that the general public can read what each councillor has to say. This is to say yes we are open and transparent and these are the facts. The public need constructive feedback and to know that you are all alive. The reason for wanting and needing this change is because; can anyone with clarity remember what was said and by whom at the last meeting or even a couple of months ago? (This was to be my first motion, but it was not to be). Now let’s see which councillor has got enough gumption to bring this up and who will second this motion, this will be very interesting to say the least. === Cool News A Mining company has been drilling core test holes for possible minerals deposits just south of Home Hill and in the Burdekin Shire. I wish them the best of luck as it could mean a few local jobs for locals. === Trivia A bit of historical trivia - in 1975 Home Hill had 147 business operating. 08.01.2022 Council Elections Well it was not to be, but thank you one and all who voted for me. A special thanks to the people I worked with in council. You are a great bunch and thanks again.... I was hoping to achieve immediate relief from rates, fees and charges in this most pressing off times - in other words absolutely no increase in any form or way well it looks like that won’t happen. COVID-19 There is no avoiding all the information in regard to COVID-19 so everyone’s priority at all times should be safety, health and the well-being of our family, people and the community at large. The public is at risk with close contact so please keep your distance. Anzac Day Parade One of the sad things to come out of this is that the Anzac Day Parade may have to be cancelled, this is always one community event that I look forward to every year. Well there is always next year. It seems that we go from one major conflict to another. We will overcome COVID-19 we just need to buckle down and hang in there and play it safe. We can still pay tribute to the most significant event in our national calendar on the 25th April by each and everyone flying the Australian flag big or small. Lloyd Mann Park Shelter Have you noticed the new shelter and the extra seating and table in Lloyd Mann Park? They look good and are a real asset to the community and a plus for Home Hill. 02.01.2022 Well it was not to be, but I did enjoy my years in council, so now I will be looking for a new career, namely pushing the wheelbarrow for Home Hill. Top marks to the general public that has supported our business and has kept everyone in a job. Also, everyone has been following the simple rules that we have in place to help protect the public against COVID-19, so keep being safe and aware of your surroundings.... I believe that the Comfort Stop toilets they should be open for use by the local public. === Dear reader here is a view point with a difference. Well it was not to be, but I did enjoy my years in council, so now I will be looking for a new career, namely pushing the wheelbarrow for Home Hill. As an observer and looking in I will keep asking questions in regard to what will Home Hill get? Because of the structure of council I now will not hear a lot and will have to wait and listen and try to read between the lines. The Newspaper prints as good as nothing in regard to council business and we must remember council business is rate payer business. Council minutes report the bare minimal. Yes saying this I will be labelled as negative - nothing new, but how about an alternative view point and not following blindly without any opposing opinion. The biggest challenge for council will be to be open and transparent and present the facts and figures so as no one can read anything into the rose-coloured facts as presented at present. This would save council from constantly trying to justify itself - not an easy task. === Top marks to the general public who have supported our business and have kept everyone in a job. Also, everyone has been following the simple rules that we have in place to help protect the public against COVID-19, so keep being safe and aware of your surroundings. === Comfort Stop Toilets I believe that the Comfort Stop toilets should be open. I ask where and what can the public use? Close down the hot plates the showers etc. and fence off the seating, but surely the toilets need to remain open. === Story of the week A local needed to use the convenience at the Comfort Stop before it was closed. Upon entering, our local noticed that both cubicle doors were locked. The local was about to leave when one of the doors opened and out walks a not so nice occupant with an arm full of toilet paper. Our local asked nicely "how about leaving some paper". Where upon the occupant smartly gave our local a mouth full and a small altercation followed. This not so pleasant person was sat on his end while clutching an arm full of ill begotten gains, and with this our hero drove off into the sunset. True story no bull. === These are my personal views only. How to contact me You can contact me on my mobile phone or by emailing me.
