16.01.2022 Today is World Tsunami Awareness Day, it’s the perfect time to remember that, as much as we like to think that Tsunamis are something that happen to other countries, the 1960 Chilean Tsunami proves that we are not immune. In the 1960 event waves up to 1m in height reached the NSW coast, with widespread impacts from Ballina to Eden, including areas as much as 10km upstream from the coast on the Hawkesbury, Georges and Clyde Rivers. The effects of the Tsunami were felt right he...re in New South Wales with waves injuring people and forcing others to flee. By sheer luck, the waves came at low to moderate tide levels in most locations, limiting damage mostly to moored boats, marine infrastructure and oyster farms. Even so, two people were injured, given population growth and coastal development since 1960, a similar event today would be likely to have a far more significant impact especially if it arrived at a high tide level. Do you know the risks of a Tsunami locally? Find out if you’re in the Tsunami Evacuation Area. Act early on the first warning you hear. NSW SES Tsunami safety advice states people go to higher ground, at least 10m above sea level, or if possible move at least 1km away from all beaches water’s edge of harbours and coastal estuaries. Please refer to ses.nsw.gov.au for the most up to date information. #TsunamiDay #Plan2Survive

09.01.2022 Whilst the severe weather warning has eased for our patch we still have winds gusting to 44km/hr and very wet ground - 140mm so far this event and still raining. Take care on the roads - some closures as creeks break their banks. Porters Creek Dam has overtopped. If it’s flooded forget it! If you need assistance our flood, storm and rescue volunteers are on standby. Call SES on 132 500 or 000 if life threatening.

09.01.2022 Great fun was had by all at Wednesday night’s search training. Errol was found and recovered - and the boats got a good run too! Keeping our skills up! Great crew! Thanks Bill for coordinating.

08.01.2022 A short drone video - so useful - of one job today at our Queensland deployment. The hail damage was extensive - only now seeing light at the end of the tunnel. A privilege to be able to help in some small way....

Lots of trees and some interesting roof and wall jobs. Gave the refurbished medium Storm Truck a good welcome to the local area. Thanks team!

06.01.2022 Heard the rumbling. Storm clouds about. Our area now part of the severe thunderstorm warning. Put your car under cover. Stay 8m from downed power lines. 05.01.2022 It is good to be reminded why we say not to enter flood waters. Check out this video. Minor to moderate flooding is expected in the Northern Rivers over the next few days. We are not expecting flooding rains in the Shoalhaven but there is likely to be some rain every day this week. If you are travelling north for holidays please take extra care, keep up to date with bom.gov.au or NSW SES Facebook page. Stay safe. If you need help from SES call 132 500 or 000 if life threatening.
