24.01.2022 Do you attend seminars/training courses to advance your skills? Or maybe online webinars/courses? Perhaps you have a yearly membership you need to maintain. Chances are you may be able to claim these costs. Your first aid training course may also be deductible if it is a requirement for your job.

23.01.2022 Uncapped immediate write-off for depreciable expenses Businesses with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $5 billion will be able to claim an immediate deduction for the full cost of an eligible depreciable asset in the first year it is used or installed ready for use. The asset must be acquired after 7.30pm 6th October 2020 until 30 June 2022. This was previously capped at $150,000.

16.01.2022 Removal of the $450 per month threshold for Superannuation Guarantee (‘SG’) eligibility aiming from 1 July 2022 The Government will remove the current $450 per month minimum income threshold, under which employees do not have to be paid SG contributions by their employer. The measure will have effect from the start of the first income year after Royal Assent of the enabling legislation, which the Government expects to have occurred prior to 1 July 2022.

10.01.2022 Due to COVID, the ATO have extended the shortcut rate for working from home until 30 June 2021. This is for the fixed rate of 80c per hour for working from home for costs such as lighting, internet, laptops, home office furniture, etc. We recommend keeping a diary to track your actual hours spent working from home during this period. Please note: this is just one option to claim home office expenses and may not be the most beneficial for your personal situation. We recommend speaking to your accountant for further advice.

06.01.2022 Extension of the immediate write-off for depreciable expenses The Government has announced that temporary full expensing will be extended by 12 months to 30 June 2023, to allow eligible businesses with aggregated annual turnover or total income of less than $5 billion to deduct the full cost of eligible depreciable assets of any value, acquired from 7:30pm AEDT on 6 October 2020 and first used or installed ready for use by 30 June 2023.

05.01.2022 Personal income tax changes It was announced in the Federal Budget that changes to the personal income tax rates would be brought forward to the 2021 financial year. Increasing the upper threshold of the 19% personal income tax bracket from $37,000 to $45,000 and increasing the upper threshold of the 32.5% personal income tax bracket from $90,000 to $120,000.

03.01.2022 Temporary loss carry-back rules for companies. Eligible companies with a turnover of less than $5 billion will be able to carry back losses from the 2020, 2021 or 2022 financial years to offset with previously taxed profits made in or after the 2019 financial year.
