12.01.2022 It's important to recognise the fact that domestic violence can be (and is) perpetrated against men and not just women. We have had to advocate for our clients as male victims on many occasions, particularly in family law matters and contested AVO matters. On a number of these instances the male victim has sustained injury, reported to police and dismissed. Each time there comes a line of questioning from the other party or even from the judicial officer presiding over the m...atter which indicates a lack of ability to understand and to accept that men can be victims of serious domestic violence as equally as women in some cases. There are a large number of organisations assisting women who have been subjected to domestic violence however there is simply not enough support for the men. Often we will hear male victims say things like "I didn't report this or that time because they didn't listen before" and "I reported the event but I felt like I was ridiculed by police taking the statement. Like they thought just because I'm a man I should just suck it up" and "I wasn't taken seriously because I was a male victim. There's a body of evidence and research showing how extremely damaging this is for children. Often it's the case that both parents are perpetrators of family violence. If you are experiencing difficulties with this type of situation, there are organisations which offer a n...umber of great courses and specific counselling to assist children with coping and to assist adults in changing their mindset and behaviours. As a standard our firm will often refer you to one or more of these courses if there are indications of family violence in your relationship. A holistic and healing approach is often the appropriate course of action in family law proceedings rather than simply "advice in a bubble".
