25.01.2022 Does a gendered view of ageing matter? Today we recognise International Day for Older Persons by reposting Dr Susan Feldman’s blog on the Alma Unit for Women and Ageing, and the connections between gender, ageing, health & wellbeing http://go.unimelb.edu.au/ej3j Image: American feminist and writer Betty Friedan (left) with Fleur Spitzer (centre) and Dr Lorraine Dennerstein, Director of the Key Centre of Women’s Health (right) at the opening of the Alma Unit for Women and Ageing in March, 1994, 2016.0037

08.01.2022 35 men were killed at work by the collapse of the West Gate Bridge on this day in 1970. At that time, workers had few ways to raise safety concerns, and site safety was largely unregulated. The outpouring of support given by Union members to widows and families of those killed was immediate. Donations from as little as 5c to several dollars were recorded next to the names of Union members on the pages in these folders. Though high vis and harnesses would not have saved the bridge workers that day, their deaths initiated significant changes to laws and practices regarding workplace safety. 04.01.2022 On the 28th of October 1916 the first of two referendums to decide if the Australian government would introduce conscription for WWI was put to the public. UMA collections reveal both sides of the conscription debate that tore Australian society in two. Supporting conscription were Percival Edgar Deane, private secretary to Prime Minister Billy Hughes in 1916 and Sir William Harrison Moore, Dean of the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Law. Moore's notes show the work co...nducted by University of Melbourne academics in connection with the 'yes' campaign during the referendums on conscription. Letters in Deane’s collection shows the relationship Prime Minister Billy Hughes enjoyed with the British government, which had introduced conscription in Britain. On the other side, the extensive trade union collection presents the anti-conscription campaign through both the public arguments against the Government and the behind-the-scenes organising of what is still regarded as one of the most powerful anti-Government campaigns in Australian history.
