18.01.2022 We live along the coast, but does anyone really appreciate the mangrove environment? Yarrabah artist Elverina Johnson Bunya Badjil does and she takes time to really consider the cultural and environmental value of mangroves! Her acrylic painting titled ‘Baby Mangroves’ exhibited in Freshwater Saltwater at UMI Arts depicts new mangroves emerging from each side of the river bring new life and evidence a healthy environment. Among the baby mangroves where the coastal sands meet brackish water, young crabs and other species will thrive and grow in this habitat. #UMIarts #cairns #fnq #queensland #aboriginal #aboriginalart #indigenous #indigenousart #ciaf

12.01.2022 Message from our CEO Please be advised that UMI Arts has temporarily closing our doors until further notice. This decision is not taken lightly and is in response to the Coronavirus crisis. Staff will be working from home and UMI Arts will be suspending our art program for 2020 for the time being. As you can appreciate everyone is scrambling both on the work and home fronts in making provisions in combatting the onslaught of COVID-19 in terms of staying safe. UMI Arts will ...review our current situation over the coming months. In the meantime staff will be contacting members in undertaking surveys on what key things members would like to see UMI Arts undertake when this pandemic is over. We understand that a lot of major events and festivals have been cancelled or postponed as a result of COVID-19. Loosing major events such as Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Markets, Laura Dance Festival and NAIDOC Week markets will have a significant impact upon potential income streams of our local arts and craft makers. We will be encouraging our artist member base to stay strong and use this downtime wisely in being creative in producing new works for future events when we come out of this crisis, and we will. You can email any queries to Mr Peter Lenoy, Executive Officer on [email protected] See more

01.01.2022 Fresh Water Salt Water Exhibition 2020 This work by local artist Susan Reys, from the Dharrpa Warra clan of the Guugu Yimithirr people is a must see at UMI Arts Freshwater Saltwater exhibition!!! Without a written language, marks incised into the surface of message sticks were a valuable tool for communicating between different groups. Susan has interpreted each shape, mark and notch with meticulous detail in a new contemporary work ‘Belonging to Country’. In traditional time...s, each mark on a message stick could convey important messages and be interpreted differently by members of the same cultural group depending on their spiritual knowledge. Such markings have inspired Susan’s painting which emphasizes how culture is written in the land to be deciphered by each person according to their strong cultural connection to country. Title: Belonging to Country’, 2020 Medium: Acrylic on canvas Dimensions: H760 x W870mm RRP: $875 #UMIarts #Indigenousarts #Aboriginalart #Australianart #Cairnsart #Cairns #FNQ #thisisqueensland #CIAF2020 #CIAF
