22.01.2022 "COVID-19 must be a wake-up call. Now is the time for unity, for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences. We cannot contemplate a future of fear and insecurity. Either we get through this pandemic together, or we fail.... 21.01.2022 The global pandemic is set to trigger the first increase in global poverty since 1990, pushing millions of people to the point of starvation. Recent estimates suggest up to 6,000 children could die every day as a result of the impact of COVID-19. To bolster a rapid response, the United Nations updated its #COVID19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan to $10.3 billion to fight the virus in low-income and fragile countries: http://ow.ly/tAyl50AIztL (photo via United Nations OCHA)

18.01.2022 Did you know that each year, about one third of all food produced - equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes - is wasted yet food security continues to be a growing global concern. Wasted food also heavily affects the environment, accounting for about 8% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the full cost of global food waste, including environmental, economic and social impacts, is estimated at US$2.6 trillion dollars annually. 18.01.2022 On World Humanitarian Day, Aug 19, we pay tribute to the real-life heroes who have committed their lives to helping others in the most extreme circumstances throughout the world. Today, we honor Umra Omar from the Lamu archipelago in Kenya, the founder of Safari Doctors, a mobile doctors unit that provides free basic medical care to hundreds of people every month from more than 17 villages in Lamu. "I think humanitarian work needs to stop being a by the way thing. It sho...uld be something that we are living as the norm." ~ Umra Omar As the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we thank aid and health workers who are overcoming unprecedented access hurdles to assist people in humanitarian crises in 54 countries, as well as in a further nine countries which have been catapulted into humanitarian need by the pandemic. #RealLifeHeroes #WorldHumanitarianDay

18.01.2022 There are estimated to be over 40 million people living in modern slavery, a disproportionate amount of whom are women and girls. As #COVID19 spread around the world, it has further jeopardised the safety and security of those caught up in this supply chain, leaving many unemployed with no protections from employers and unable to travel to find alternate work a sobering reality that makes it hard to assert that it isnt a huge problem and doesnt touch our lives, especially when it comes to the supply chain of what is bought and consumed every day. Anti-slavery advocate and United Nations Association of Australias youngest appointed Goodwill Ambassador Grace Forrest works to shine a light on the situations of vulnerable garment workers, many of which have been made worse by the onset of the pandemic: http://ow.ly/jxJj50BpygZ

16.01.2022 The ACT has done it! The Australian Capital Territory has voted to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years old, becoming the first jurisdiction in Australia to bring the age in line with standards recommended by the United Nations. Across the rest of Australia however, children as young as 10 can be arrested by police, charged with an offence, hauled before a court and locked away in a prison. Its time for the federal, state and territory governments to do whats right and change the laws to raise the age. Children belong in classrooms and playgrounds, not in handcuffs, courtrooms or prison cells.

16.01.2022 The #COVID19 crisis has led to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions but the increased demand for disposable products like plastic face masks and hand sanitiser bottles have exacerbated plastic pollution, allowing them to clog our landfills and float in our seas. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, effective trade rules can help limit the spread of coronavirus waste: http://bit.ly/3jDJLXl

06.01.2022 Stay-at-home orders limit the spread of the virus but can potentially result in dangerous situations for women and girls with violent partners. In order to respond effectively to the crisis, we need a whole-society approach to understand its differential impact on women and men. The UN ensures that gender is integrated in the COVID-19 response plan, not only to achieve better outcomes for women and girls, but to achieve better outcomes for everyone....
