25.01.2022 Our Unchaining Modern Slavery webinar on June 17 between Stephen B Morse and Quintin Lake was well received with some great feedback around what Just Good Work offers companies wanting to bridge the gap with workers at risk of #modernslavery in their supply chains and operations. For those who were unable to jump on board in the end, we have included here a link to the recording for you to watch at your leisure: https://us02web.zoom.us//zPnIvEujmDHi21ekCfSOtgD4y4o1D29Mu Th...e four key takeaways from our event are: The journey of a person caught up in modern slavery is not predictable or linear and so there is great need to provide a range of information so that workers are empowered to make good choices for themselves. There are many touch points where a person is vulnerable to being exploited even before they leave their country or region of origin. By providing workers with access to an application like Just Good Work, they can mitigate the risk of being exploited and be better equipped to negotiate their way in a foreign culture. Just Good Work is versatile in that it can be customised for large organisations to assist their workforce outside their immediate jurisdiction, and can act as a useful onboarding tool to ensure workers throughout the supply chain get a fair deal. Our next webinar will on July 22, with more information to come in the next few weeks. #bizhumanrights #modernslaveryact #tech4good #workersrights

24.01.2022 Have you ever considered how complex the issue of #forcedlabour really is? Consider this current example with Australian state government #transportation projects. The #business of #humanrights is so often about putting profits ahead of justice. And when it comes to the #uighurs, there is plenty of scope to trade on the confusion created by a mass propaganda machine beyond our control. #bizhumanrights #endslavery #modernslaveryact #humanrights

20.01.2022 Interesting read in the AgJournal of The Weekend edition of The Australian about the current shortage of workers on farms and its impact on fruit and vegetable growers. While I appreciate the current impact of COVID-19 in restricting access to foreign contingent labour, what struck me was the lack of reference to reports such as As if we weren’t human’, published in September, which highlights the plight of current temporary workers already in Australia. Despite the majority interviewed being students impacted by urban lockdown restrictions, the report points to the plight of many temporary workers who are often exploited in the agricultural sector. Whatever strategy is deployed to get workers on farms, let’s make sure workers rights are protected, as well as the interest of farmers. #modernslaveryact #ethicalsourcing #workersrights

18.01.2022 In the November edition of Company Director by Australian Institute of Company Directors, Louise McGrath from Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) raises the importance of transparency in supply chains in the wake of #Covid-19, especially around modern slavery risk. The current season of disruption provides the opportunity for reshaping the entire system of supply chain management through an investment in technology for monitoring and assessing risk, and professional development which includes skills in identifying and assessing risk and collaboration. #modernslaveryact #supplychainmanagement #ethicalsourcing

15.01.2022 How effective are your current strategies to assess and mitigate the risk of #modernslavery in your #supplychains beyond your Tier One suppliers? Over the past year we've had some insightful conversations with many Australian organisations working to make an impact on #forcedlabour throughout their supply chains. We've bundled these strategies in our ScoreApp survey here in order to further test the effectiveness of these strategies. ... We invite you to rate these strategies, and get in touch to talk about how Unchained can help you further. https://stephen-wmotpwuf.scoreapp.com #bizhumanrights #procurement #suppliercollaboration #modernslaveryact

10.01.2022 Here is Podcast 6 of my series, Understanding Modern Slavery. Here I talk about the goal of the Modern Slavery Act and its place in the future of business. If you business needs help with implementing the Act, be in touch here, or contact us at www.unchained.net.au. With two months to go before the end of the first reporting period, now is the time to take action, if you haven't done so. The good news is that the Australian Government today announced a 3-month extension for submitting your Modern Slavery Statement. This is great news for business, and an opportunity to use the time to strengthen your company's investment in modern slavery intervention. #modernslaveryact #modernslavery #bizhumanrights #endslavery #ethicalsourcing #supplychains

10.01.2022 Is #Australia, the land of the "one and free", on track to develop new classed society, including an underclass? From this insightful article by Abul Rizvi in the The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia risks creating an underclass of unskilled migrant workers through the recent #Agriculture visa. Meanwhile from The Australian, Katrina Grace Kelly provides insight into our emerging asset-based class system: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//fafd279978f4015d092f93e2 We have mor...e than enough evidence about the #exploitation of #migrantworkers to know that concrete protections, support and effective grievance mechanisms are in place. Let's do more to create a sustainable #agriculture industry that not only excels in 'E' but also 'S'. #bizhumanrights #workersrights #modernslaveryact #sustainablefarming

05.01.2022 The true cost of our clothes is still being counted! Last year, Asia Pacific News reported that during the first month of lockdown in 2020, an estimated US$30B worth of orders for garments were either cancelled or suspended. From this The University of Sheffield report, it seems that the pandemic not only created a seismic shock to the industry, but over time has seen the steady rise in the risk of #forcedlabour.... What can you do today to encourage your favourite brand to take a stand? #bizhumanrights #garmentindustry #modernslaveryact #workersrights

04.01.2022 It is privilege to be featured by Eternity News this week about the scourge of modern slavery and the work we are doing at Unchained Business Services.

02.01.2022 It was a privilege to be featured in @Inside Small Business on October 28, in which I gave some key insights for small business owners who may be required to investigate the risk of modern slavery to their business as Tier 1 suppliers. #modernslaveryact #endslavery #smallbusiness #ethicalsourcing

02.01.2022 Well, the #nswgovernment is finally putting the #modernslaveryact back on the table with the possibility for bill being introduced to amend the original legislation passed back in 2018! There has been a certain mystery to the so called 'harmonisation' process with the Commonwealth law. We look forward to seeing the NSW MSA in play because of the number of provisions it brings including the appointment of an Anti-Slavery Commissioner. It will also capture a number of businesse...s who sit way below the $100M threshold. Having said that, from our engagement with Australian companies, there already exists a knock-on effect in the market as many non-reporting entities are opt-ing into comply. They are doing this because they are committed to following through on their moral convictions about #endingslavery. This is on top of their need to remain competitive in the market as Tier 1 suppliers to government and large corporations. For this we commend them. Thanks for the article Tom Rabe. #bizhumanrights #endslavery #modernslaveryact #sustainability
