13.01.2022 Roald Dahl . (13 September 1916 - 23 November 1990) . 'Boy: Tales of Childhood' (1984) Jonathan Cape... . An autobiography full of funny anecdotes and humorous snippets of Roald Dahl’s childhood. . Dahl writes of some of his childhood memories: I have never been able to get them out of my mind. Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleasant. I suppose that is why I have always remembered them so vividly. All are true. . .....Dahl! Come here! The other boys melted away with the speed of light and I crept forward to receive my orders. Go and heat my seat in the bogs, Wilberforce said. I want it warm. I hadn’t the faintest idea what any of this meant, but I already knew better than to ask questions.I hurried away and found a fellow servant who told me the meaning of this curious order. It meant that the Boazer wished to use the lavatory but that he wanted the seat warmed for him before he sat down. The six House lavatories, none with doors, were situated in an unheated outhouse and on a cold day in winter you could get frostbite out there if you stayed too long. This particular day was icy-cold, and I went out through the snow into the outhouse and entered number one lavatory, which I knew was reserved for Boazers only. I wiped the frost off the seat with my handkerchief, then I lowered my trousers and sat down. I was there a full fifteen minutes before Wilberforce arrived on the scene. ‘Have you got the ice off it? he asked Yes Wilberforce. Is it warm? It’s warm as I can get it, Wilberforce, I answered. ‘We shall soon find out, he said You can get off now. I got off the lavatory seat and pulled up my trousers. Wilberforce lowered his own trousers and sat down. Very good, he said. Very good indeed. He was like a wine taster sampling an old claret. I shall put you on my list, he added... From then on, all through winter, i became Wilberforce's favourite bog-seat warmer, and I used always to keep a paperback book in my pocket to while away the long bog-warming sessions...I must of read the entire works of Dickens that winter...." 11.01.2022 Long before Billy Bluegum made his trek to fame in the pages of ‘The Magic Pudding’, readers of the Bulletin delighted in the activities of Lindsay’s most popular bear . Through two tumultuous decades, Billy’s adventures reflected the social and political turmoil of a country suffering the birth pains of nationhood and soon to plunged into world war . Society, marriage and divorce, elections, conscription and war, the horse races and Christmas--all are dealt with in Lindsay’s... inimitable style; his wry and witty captions and the final piquant touch . This selection includes both the first and last Billy Bluegum pictures drawn by Lindsay See more

11.01.2022 ..The moving finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.....

10.01.2022 Visitors to our shop have admired a lot of recent additions - book boxes out the front, a new display window, and extra shelving throughout the shop. The curved shelves are especially popular. Here are the carpenters responsible - Mick (on the right) and his team of Will and Nathan. I was allowed to take their photo for this page as long as I captured their best side. Not sure if I managed it . . . .
