25.01.2022 So we got a quick 25mm of rain in Byron with reasonable sized hail stones, and 56 knot winds measured at the Lighthouse. It could have been a lot worse and from... many reports from Brunswick, Federal, Goonengerry and other areas, many people reported up to 10cm hail stones and some unfortunate dents in their cars. I think this is just the start of a stormy summer so please folks, next time, get your car under cover if possible. We all love a good storm but if all predictions come true we are in for more of what we saw today, and more often until March or April. Thanks Tanya for the picture. If we’d have got that in my street in Byron, many cars would have lost their windscreens! See more

13.01.2022 Found at someone’s front door without it’s mother, Ping (Pong) the Rufous Bettong was taken into care by WIRES.Classified as an orphan, the carer noticed that P...ing was a little unsteady on her back feet so she decided to get x-rays done by a local vet. The initial x-rays were sent on to Dr Bree Wildlife Vet for assessment, and what Bree found was Ping had an issue with her left tibia (shin bone) at the growth plate. Bree discussed with the carer to minimise her movements so it allows the leg to heal. The next step was to visit Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital for a follow up assessment. Dr Bree and Hayley Corrigan anaesthetised Ping, then did a second round of x-rays. Our team still found some abnormalities to the left tibial growth plate, but noticed the injury wasn't causing Ping any major issues. Ping will be monitored regularly by the carer and will keep in contact with our team for her next steps of treatment, rehabilitation and recovery. We will keep you updated on Ping’s progress! You can support us and our patients like Ping by donating today. https://byronbaywildlifehospital.org/ #forthewildlife

11.01.2022 We are planning to build a new $2.6 million skatepark and recreation precinct at Sandhills at Byron Bay. The skatepark is planned for the area near the existing... Byron Youth Activities Centre (YAC), the library and the Sandhills Childcare Centre. The project is being funded by the NSW Government's Road and Election Infrastructure Commitment Grant and Council. An initial concept of the skatepark was done in 2018 and now we are at the stage of developing detailed plans. CONVIC, regarded as one of the world's best skatepark designers, has been engaged to design the new Byron Bay skatepark. Using those initial designs as a starting point we want to hear feedback and ideas from everyone who is interested in seeing the area recreated as a safe and inclusive community space for people of all ages. Click here to view the concept designs and take the survey: https://www.yoursaybyronshire.com.au/byron-bay-skatepark-an

10.01.2022 INCIDENT HIGHLIGHTS NEED TO DOWNLOAD SMARTPHONE EMERGENCY PLUS APP - by Halden Boyd AN INCIDENT near Grafton recently has prompted authorities to urge people to... download a free Smartphone App to help save lives. Lower Southgate resident Peter Martin found a man who had been injured after three large sheets of rio steel fell on him at a property. He called NSW Ambulance to go to the property to assist the injured man, however an Ambulance officer who took the call could not identify where the location actually was. I had to go to the main road near the property and flag the Ambulance paramedics down and led them to the site, and my worry was that it could have been a matter of life and death because the man sustained serious injuries. A spokesman from the NSW Ambulance Service said that sometimes there were problems with unnamed roads. What we thoroughly recommend is that people download the free Emergency App onto their phones, he said. What the App does is it gives exact latitude and longitude on the phone screen which can then be relayed to the Emergency Operator which can then onpass this to rescue teams and the Ambulance Service so that if someone comes across and incident we can get resources and responders to the scene as quickly as possible. As well there are a lot of changes to local road networks especially on the North Coast with the construction of the Pacific Motorway. The App is also very handy if say an accident happens in a remote location away from roads. The co-ordinates can be given to say the SES and also the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and others like the Police Rescue Squad. Many people have already downloaded the App and it has led to positive outcomes in the past. Other organisations like NSW Fire and Rescue, the State Emergency Service, the Rural Fire Service, the VRA and other accredited emergency groups also strongly recommend that people download the handy and potentially life saving Emergency Plus App.

04.01.2022 The Homeless Women of the Byron Shire you won’t see on Instagram Poverty is an uncomfortable truth. Knowing you can intervene to change the circumstance of anot...her human being is a privilege and a duty. In his book The Life You Can Save, philosopher Peter Singer argued that citizens of affluent nations are behaving immorally if they do not act to end the poverty they know to exist in developing nations. This is upsetting. None of us want to perceive ourselves as immoral. But we are. I believe Singer’s thesis can be pushed further. In this shiny coastal utopia we call home, filled with influencers doing yoga on the beach, celebs building mansions on hills and real estate values swelling like the bellies of Singer’s malnourished children, then perhaps its time we looked at what we should do to change. And I’m not saying council. I’m saying us. The rental stress in this region is out of control and is about to make a whole tier of the community who previously occupied the lower rung of the rental market at risk and homeless. Many of these are the unseen of homelessness. Women. Let me share three real stories from this community. I have changed their names to protect their dignity, but be assured, these are not fictional stories. This is the long term social harm that occurs when the super privileged move to town and our most vulnerable are left without options. Meet Carol, she’s 87. She’s a widow who has been living in a rental in Ocean Shores for the last 7 years. She still drives. She is still able to live independently. Her rental was $350 per week. She lives upstairs and sublets downstairs so she can manage on her meagre aged pension. Her landlord has just served Carol with an eviction notice and she is to vacate the property in the next 6 weeks. Clearly with the going rental rates, a renovated house in Ocean Shores could lease for up to $800 per week. Who would begrudge anyone a bit of free market opportunism? Isn’t it what we all do? But all opportunism has a human cost. And I guess if we were to be truly honest with ourselves, that is where it becomes immoral. There aren’t many options for Carol. She doesn’t want to leave the area because this is where she has made friends, it’s where her life is, it’s where her medical and social supports are. How does an 87 year old woman pick up and start again as a stranger in a new community with no support? Before you say what I hear many say which is move somewhere you can afford, consider what a community is. Consider how valid every tier of our community is to our overall social cohesion. That is what inclusion means. As soon as you say move out you are engaging in exclusivity. We start to live in a gated community. Except you can’t see the gates. So here are the options for Carol. She can go to the Tribunal and possibly get extended tenancy until January. Not an ideal time to be seeking accommodation. The reality is, who will lease to Carol? How can she compete on the pension up against young couples who have moved from Sydney who have offered to pay 6 months in advance? Because that’s happening. Everyone I know who has got a lease recently has paid their rent months upfront. Who of our vulnerable community could afford to do that? There is an elderly priority wait list for Housing Department once you are 80 but unfortunately we are so short of housing here that's not an option. The only retirement village where you can rent at $250 per week is in Murwillumbah but there is a long wait list for a room. Carol is 87 and her most realistic outcome at this point is going to be homelessness. She will have to live in her car. Oh yes there is the 28 days temporary accommodation. You know how that works? It’s 5 nights, and then you have to go back to your local office in Tweed with your signed lease seeker document to prove you are looking for housing. This continues until the 28 days is up. Then guess what? Nothing. There is nothing. This is how a vulnerable member of our community who has always paid her rent, who has done the right thing ends up homeless. If we let this happen, we are immoral. She is extremely distressed. She is frightened. She feels her life has no meaning, that she has no value, no future. The message WE are giving Carol is that there is no place for her here. In a truly connected community her story must become our story. Someone must intervene. There are enough people in our region with enough money to pay for 100 Carols. Please step up. Meet Sally. She’s a hard working single mother in her mid thirties. She currently lives with her two children in a one and a half bedroom home. She’s been living here for over a decade. She recently looked at a house in Newrybar where 245 people applied. If she doesn’t find something she’ll have to leave the area. Her kids will need to change schools, she’ll need to find work again, and she will be living somewhere without her social supports. Someone please step up. And then there’s Bec. She’s in her late 20’s and has a full time job in hospitality. She’s a brilliantly friendly young woman with a talent for connecting with her customers. When she’s not couch surfing she has been living in her car. Step up. Housing stress is hard on the whole community but it’s particularly hard on women who become increasingly vulnerable as they slide into homelessness. Government and councils are hamstrung by funding availabily, politics, budget restraints, and generally progress moves far too slow to make changes for so many people in housing stress. Right now there is an opportunity for the affluent private sector, and I especially mean the super affluent you know who you are new residents like Chris Hemsworth who love this place that so many of us have worked so hard to curate into something unique and amazing, to do something meaningful. We welcome you and we call on those newer residents like Chris and friends who by their sheer presence have unwittingly had significant economic impacts on our post code desirability explosion to really become part of this community by leading the way to create something ongoing for our most under resourced citizens. Imagine the story we could tell to the world if rich and poor could live together harmoniously in a connected community! We need social housing for women like Sally and Bec. We need someone with a lot of money to do it now. We need a house for Carol now. This is the life you can save. If anyone has housing options for Carol, please email [email protected] And if you have a shitload of cash and want to change the world. Lets start. It’s time to step up. Please Like my page and Share the shit outta this. I want to know what you have to say too - so don't be shy about commenting.
