25.01.2022 Announcing episode 6 of 'Virtues for the Times': Crisis in the USA... As the US weeps for its pandemic victims and angry protesters take to the streets demanding that the lockdown and institutional racism finally end, what do we make of it all? In this episode we try and understand the role of religion in a time of social distress and ask whether religious responses to the current crisis could make things better or worse. Don't miss this most excellent contribution to the series by the IES' Dr John Rees, 2021 Fulbright Australia Scholar.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Professor Margo Somerville who has won Best Essay (Scholarly Magazines) in the Catholic Press Association United States and Canada Awards! Congratulations Professor Somerville!

23.01.2022 "Intentionally allowing [coronavirus] to spread is a very different proposal to easing social distancing measures, and involves a deliberate decision to expose vulnerable people to a potentially deadly disease." A new article in ABC Religion and Ethics by one of our bioethics researchers.

23.01.2022 The IES is passionate about contributing to public conversations about pressing ethical and social issues. And July-August have been busy! Heres what you might have missed: IES Director Professor John Lippitt had a fascinating article in Standpoint (magazine) exploring how Søren Kierkegaards reflections on worry are useful reading for those in lockdown. IES Research Associate Tim Smartt had an opinion piece in The Sydney Morning Herald exploring the case for a mandatory... COVID-19 vaccination policy (once a safe and effective vaccine is available). Tims op-ed generated two follow-up articles: an article in The Age summarising the articles impact and interviewing Tim on the details of his view, and an article in The Sydney Morning Herald by Professor Julie Leask and Associate Professor Nicholas Wood (University of Sydney) responding to Tims piece. IES Research Associate Dr Megan Best was a guest on the podcast With All Due Respect discussing how her research in spirituality and palliative care provides insights on the fear of death. IES Research Associate Dr Megan Best had a piece in The Gospel Coalition exploring the ethics of COVID-19 vaccines that use cells derived from aborted human foetuses. IES Research Associate Tim Smartt appeared on two episodes of The Ramsay Centre For Western Civilisation's "Great Books of the Western Canon" series discussing Aristotle, Aquinas, and Nietzsche. Professor Margo Somerville (IES Affiliate and Professor of Bioethics in the NDA Sydney School of Medicine) won Best Essay (Scholarly Magazines) in the Catholic Press Association United States and Canada Awards. IES Adjunct Dr Xavier Symons had an opinion piece in the Financial Review exploring the case for a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. Check the comments for links to each item.

23.01.2022 Virtues for the Times, Episode 2: Healthcare & Spiritual Care Spirituality can be understood as the "meaning, purpose and connectedness in people's lives." "On the upside, one of the things that is happening a lot now in aged care across Australia is the inter-generational connection through cards and letters being sent from schools, particularly primary schools, to people in residential care as a gesture of support, love and concern from the communities..."... Don't miss this great interview as IES Researcher Dr Kate Jones speaks with Ilsa Hampton, CEO of Meaningful Ageing Australia, on the significance of spiritual care, particularly for older Australians but also for anyone in need of some practical suggestions on spiritual wellbeing.

22.01.2022 What are the causes of the staggering rise of conspiracy theories we’ve seen in recent years? And what can we do to reduce their harmful impact on our social life? IES Research Associate Tim Smartt has an opinion piece at ABC Religion & Ethics exploring the ethics and epistemology of conspiracy theories about the bushfires in California and Australia. Coauthored with Professor Mark Colyvan (University of Sydney) and Assistant Professor Hannah Tierney (UC Davis).

05.01.2022 The IES is delighted to share Episode 3 of Virtues for the Times: The Ethics of Healthcare Rationing. There's never been a more important time to reflect on the ethical principles that guide medical decision making. How should we distribute scarce healthcare resources -- such as ventilators, ICU beds, or life-saving medicine -- during healthcare emergencies such as the COIVD-19 pandemic? Should resources be distributed so that they benefit the most people possible? Should we... prioritize certain social groups -- perhaps the young, the relatively healthy, or healthcare workers -- ahead of other social groups? Should we simply distribute goods based on first come first served? Don't miss this great interview with IES Research Associate and 2020 Fulbright Australia Scholar Dr Xavier Symons on the moral principles that we should use when making high-stakes moral decisions about distributing finite healthcare resources. -- If you would like to dive deeper, Xavier has recently appeared in the media discussing his research on this issue.
