16.01.2022 We are such big fans of Alexs work and the meanings behind her art. Dressed with Thought was inspired by imagery of the favelas in Brazil. The first time I saw them was in a National Geographic magazine when I was just a kid. But I was struck by how colourful they were. I was intrigued by how people with very little, took the time and resources to paint these bright colours. I wondered about how art and colour can affect our spirit, and our outlook, and what life must be... like there. I made this painting because this place captured my imagination when I was young, and since painting this over 10 years ago, buildings, and houses have been a repeating symbol in my work. They can say so much about our societal position, our culture, our wealth. Yet no matter how we represent ourselves, no matter which type of house we were born into, or however we dress ourselves each morning, without all that we are ultimately all made up of the same thing. And how we choose to construct ourselves, how we choose to cultivate our human spirit can have a huge impact on the things around us. I also realise that not everyone is in a position to be able to spend time thinking about this, survival always comes first. I guess thats why the colourful favelas were so intriguing.
