24.01.2022 15th August 1945, Victory in the Pacific Day. For three years from 4th July 1942, the Underground Hospital sat at the ready, prepared for a Japanese air raid which thankfully never happened. If you have any photos of Mount Isa from this time in our cities history we would love to see them in the comments.

20.01.2022 It’s with a heavy heart that we advise our members, volunteers and visitors of the passing of our much treasured volunteer Bob Copelin. Our love and thoughts are with Maureen and the extended Copelin family. Attached is a lovely story about Bob and Maureen by local historian and author Kim-Maree Burton. ... RIP Bob Copelin

17.01.2022 We have been blessed to have Barbara Shipman helping us out over the last two days. Thanks Barbara and thank you to her family for sharing her with us during her visit.

16.01.2022 Christine has a passion for furniture restoration. Today she is volunteering her time working on this piece while passing on her knowledge to us. When completed it will be returned to the tent house in the coming weeks. If you are interested in helping out, meeting new people and learning something new, please contact us via direct message.

15.01.2022 Massive shout out to Lem, Tyron and the boys from SIS SPECIALISED INDUSTRIAL SOLUTIONS who are hard at it hydro scaling the rock wall. This wonderful local business is doing this ‘in kind’. Please support the businesses who support us.

12.01.2022 Throw back Thursday to when comedian Steph Tisdell visited our very own Ian Brown for a tour of the tunnel hospital.

11.01.2022 Another day of hydro scaling today and they wouldn’t be able to do it without the generosity of Cava Hydraulics & Engineering who donated the use of the EWP. Thank you Cava Hydraulics & Engineering Please support the businesses that support us.

07.01.2022 Have you been to the Camooweal Drovers Camp?

06.01.2022 West to east - Mount Isa to Townsville - the Overlanders Way delivered on its promises and so much more - a fascinating, adventurous and exhilarating journey of... 904 km plus diversions. Kicking off in Mount Isa brought the first surprise. I thought: Mount Isa is just a mining town. How wrong I was? Yes, copper, lead, zinc and silver mines still rule, but this is a multi-facetted, multi-layered and very multicultural city. In the 1950s a couple of Inuit miners arrived from Alaska to find everyone came from somewhere else - the Mines Dining Hall chef was a Czechoslovakian, the company pilot an Estonian, and the company watchman was a Spaniard. Those from Finland were so commonplace that they became known locally as Huckleberrys and were one of numerous nationalities with their own footy team. This melting pot of culture has created a city like no other - where residents search out adventure and camaraderie in equal doses, and there is so much to see and do. Start at the Outback At Isa centre. Only a half hour east I started to Experience Cloncurry at the abandoned Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine, where those in SC vehicles can free camp at the old towncentre and also at picturesque Clem Walton Park. Another short drive east is Cloncurry, where the Royal Flying Doctor Service was born and the courageous spirit necessary to be a pioneer aviator is still evident in everyday conversations. The Outback can be dry and dusty - all part of its enduring charm, but having been on the road for quite some while, I felt a little indulgence and pampering was in order. Who would have thought I'd find my salvation at the Julia Creek Caravan Park! Yesss, a wonderful soak in rejuvenating artesian water at sunset in a replica rider hut. Oh, superb - I could face anything the world could throw at me. Even 12m long marine monsters! Richmond, a 90-minute drive from JC, is home to a terrifyingly HUGE beast. It would have eaten TRex for breaky - double the size! Kronosaurus was sort of a thick short-necked crocodile on steroids and it was found in Richmond. Not to be outdone, a Visit Hughenden expedition, just a tad further east, brought me face-to-face with another dinosaur. Hughenden is also part of the Australian Dinosaur Trail, and both Richmond and Hughenden have lovely lakes that are free of croc, shark, stinger and prehistoric nasties! A smidge north is Australia's Grand Canyon - Porcupine Gorge. No porcupines to be found, but many echidnas, stunning views, great walks and a national park campground. Turning tail to head east once more, the tiny town of Prairie is home to a wonderfully quirky pub with camping and a donation box out back. The fairy-lit veranda has saddles on old hitching posts and trikes hanging upsIde down from the ceiling. The public bar carries on the whimsy with a roof encased in hats, a buffalo head, a vintage Vespa, and an intriguing array of seats, including a 1930s dental chair! Charters Towers is the second big centre along the route - its gold rush origins still evident in the magnificent architecture that dominates the city. Entering Ravenswood, 70km on from Charters Towers, is like passing through a time tunnel - its small main street and surrounding old mine sites have remained untouched for 140 years and the buildings are in strikingly good condition. The entire town is covered by an Australian Heritage Council order. At its height the town boasted 42 pubs! Equally amazingly, two still exist and are a portal to a time where I seemed to have lots of fun. From Ravenswood it's less than two hours to Townsville, where the views from Castle Hill showcase a modern city on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef that has embraced modern living. Love the trendy cafes and public art especially. Hard to believe that so much can be packed into a 900-km journey! 05.01.2022 Painting prep is completed and now the first coat of paint is going on thanks to North West Queensland Painting. NWQP painted the tent house when it was with the National Trust and recently worked on another Heritage Listed property, so we know this old girl is in good hands. The Tent House conservation work is thanks to funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Queensland
