24.01.2022 Substance Misuse Limestone Coast has commented on the recent report The Ice Age released by Business SA late last month, saying that while it provided some useful insights into substance use in South Australia, it was misleading to claim that the state was experiencing an ice epidemic. They also discussed the findings that many South Australians were turning up to work under the influence of ice, saying that because of its potency, ice could take one to two days to leave... the body and many people would not realise they were still affected by weekend use. http://bit.ly/2KBhOg9 #TheIceAge #drugreport #publichealth
24.01.2022 'The University of Sydney will soon be home to a world-first centre tackling substance use and mental disorders in young people. The new centre will work closely with the Brain and Mind Centre and other University of Sydney academics addressing mental health and addiction issues and will provide the key focus on the intersection of these issues in young people.' #YouthMentalHealth ... https://bit.ly/2JJX3jD
22.01.2022 Acknowledging the link between viral hepatitis and injecting drug use is incredibly important. What's even more important is that those living with or at risk of hep C are made aware of how easily it is treated. "If you have ever shared equipment to inject drugs, had prison, backyard or other unsterile tattoos, had unsterile medical procedures or had blood transfusions in Australia before February 1990, then see your doctor and have a blood test. And if you know you have hep ...C, get treatment as soon as possible. Jump straight to Plan C, and get cured." -President of Hepatitis NSW Warren Fahey http://bit.ly/2LNHomZ #hepC

17.01.2022 Effective treatment does not come from a simple approach of removing the young person from their day to day life and forcing abstinence. Substance abuse is complex and is often associated with disability, mental health issues, family dynamics and social circumstances. Helen Connolly, South Australia’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, has criticised the State Government’s plan to introduce mandatory drug treatment for children as punitive.... http://bit.ly/2KAU7V6 #harmreduction #rehabilitation #substanceuse

14.01.2022 'With 140 beds the Salvation Army’s Dooralong Transformation Centre is one of, if not, the largest rehab facilities in the southern hemisphere. But even it is creaking under the weight of constant referrals with more than 100 just in the month of August alone.' #Treatment #DrugPolicy ... https://bit.ly/2zKm75t

13.01.2022 The Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team is using the power of art to tackle the issues caused by drug and alcohol dependency. Art therapy is an evidence-based mental health support that offers individuals a non-intrusive way of communicating when words are not enough, Elizabeth Schiemer, chair of the Port Stephens CDAT team, said. http://bit.ly/2ASc6XH... #arttherapy #substancedependancy
12.01.2022 It’s no secret that for young people today, whether in sport or any profession, mental health is a really a big issue. There is no magic wand, I am always going to be vulnerable and there is always temptation, but for me it’s about finding the balance and understanding that there is no such thing as a quick fix. https://bit.ly/2BN7WPs

09.01.2022 The NSW Drug Court aims to reduce the risk of re-offending by people found guilty of non-violent drug-related crime by implementing community management or rehabilitation treatment programs, rather than jail sentences. Judge Paul Cloran said most of the people seen by the Drug Court had problem with methamphetamine, ice in particular. "There is nothing more satisfying than seeing people who were in a hopeless situation when they came onto the program turn their lives around.... More than 50 per cent of people on the program don't go back to jail." - Judge Paul Cloran http://bit.ly/2n1QZZo #drugcourt #rehabilitation #harmreduction
08.01.2022 The law has many intentions, one of which is deterrence, but you look at the numbers on drug usage and it’s clear people aren’t being deterred. It’s not working." #DrugPolicy https://bit.ly/2yry3ZY

01.01.2022 'Publicly funded rehabilitation beds are in short supply and have months-long waiting lists, forcing desperate families to turn to unregulated private clinics.' '...Professor Lubman said the shame around addiction was so powerful that research showed drug users were waiting about 10 years before seeking help.' More treatment services and an end to stigma is needed now to address problematic ice use. #EndStigma ... https://ab.co/2JxHOu8
