13.01.2022 I Support No-Take Season #saveourspidercrabs It is NOT ok to harvest these iconic Australian animals in masse when they come into the shallows for ‘safety in numbers’ to moult their shells like ‘shooting fish in a bucket’. Over the space of several hours of intensive targeting, almost all of these small, meatless crabs were taken with very few allowed to complete their moulting process. The crabbing practices that have emerged in the past two years have also ca...used significant environmental damage and increased risk to the dozens of observers in the water at any given time who have flocked to the peninsula for many years to witness this natural spectacle. We strongly advocate for a ‘No-Take’ Season during these annual moulting aggregations to allow this natural phenomenon to continue to be observed as a long-standing tradition in Australia’s beautiful Port Phillip Bay. We urge that the law be changed to preserve this important part of Mornington Peninsula’s spectacular wildlife celebration for generations to come. 11.01.2022 Local resident Matt Wilkinson (Wilko) was extremely close to being attacked by a shark near Sharpes Beach on Wednesday. The footage was captured on a Surf Life Saving aerial drone. The drone broadcast a warning to Wilko through its speakers saying that there was a dangerous shark in the area, return to the beach! See the close encounter below for yourself!

01.01.2022 Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up: Calling all Citizen Scientists https://www.tangaroablue.org//join-reefcleans-2020-great-/ The Tangaroa Blue Foundation, through the ReefClean Project, is calling on citizen scientists, schools, community groups, local governments, and all ocean lovers to participate in the GBR Clean-Up. A number of launch events will be held across the GBR region, including at Harbour Beach (Mackay), Alva Beach (Ayr), Hinchinbrook Island, Innes Park (Bundaberg)... and Farnborough Beach (Yeppoon). The program also invites groups to adopt and register their own sites to be cleaned throughout the month. All debris collected at the clean-ups will be sorted and entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database.
