For trimming seam allowances, I cant live without my Klass duckbill scissors. 24.01.2022 A discussion has been taking place on Instagram about independent pattern companies and their relationship to women with bigger bodies. A lot of people feel that, consciously or not, designers ignore the need for a broader range of sizes. I know a lot of people sew their own bras because their size is difficult to find in RTW. How do you feel about bra patterns? Are there enough companies catering to larger cupped customers? #Repost @sewprettyinpink... A discussion began yesterday via a post on @sbccpatterns about why rtw and pattern companies choose not to expand to plus sizes. The post highlighted the issues that pattern designers encounter when trying to expand size ranges. But its the conversation about the post and from pattern companies that do not have a wide range that becomes partof a wider conversation about how the world views fat bodies: were too difficult. The issues are countless but ultimately boil down to the fact that the "standards" were created ages ago and were exclusionary at the time. Passively or actively accepting that *is* being part of an exclusionary society. It is being part of the problem and if your company claims to be body positive and doesnt have a larger size range that reflects the majority of people in the world, you are co-opting the language of fat activists and using it for your own purposes which are exclusionary. Its time to change these standards, create the resources, share information and destroy those "standards." Be part of the change. Dont use gender-exclusive language, commit to a better size range (even if it takes years; well wait...were good at it...weve been waiting for years already), and commit to showing more fat bodies, BIPOC bodies, queer bodies, older bodies, disabled bodies, and so much more in your social media and your pattern covers.
