22.01.2022 Ahh, the Noisy Miner you may have witnessed these birds hopping towards you and your lunch at one of UNE’s park benches as invasive as they may be towards your lunchbreak, they are just as invasive to local woodlands species. For Postdoctoral Researcher, Ahmad Barati, his interest into the species highlights a major ecological issue for Australian native avifauna. Ahmad’s research observes how native bird species in the Northern Tablelands has experienced a remarkable d...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Some massive news off the shores of Northern Queensland, so lets DIVE on in Researchers have found a new 'detached' reef in the waters off of Cape York. Estimated to be over 20 million years old at it's deepest part, the reef is around 1.5km long and vertically spans from 500m deep to 40m below the surface. Bigger than the Empire State Building! 'Detached' meaning the reef is bedded on the ocean floor and not attached to the body of the Great Barrier Reef. It is the fir...st to be discovered in over 120 years. 16.01.2022 Whose hung around for Summer study?! For many of our students studying over T3 you might be taking part in the PASS (Peer Assisted Student Support) Sessions offered to a variety of first year units. We’ve teamed up with PASS UNE to introduce some of the amazing leaders who are running the mentor sessions over this trimester. Robb College student Krishna Nagarajan is one of the PASS leaders for BIOL110. Krishna began his Bachelor of Rural Science at the beginning of the yea...r. After completing the BIO unit with flying colours, he was approached by the PASS coordinators to help students who are undergoing the unit over T3. Q: What did you enjoy about doing the BIOL110 unit yourself? I really enjoyed the exploration of the basics of biology genetics, metabolism, plus animal structure & function. Q: What do you look forward to achieving as a PASS leader? I’m excited to develop my skills and facilitate interesting discussions on unit content whilst engaging student’s interest with the unit. I’m also keen to create activities that foster enthusiasm for unit content and hope to connect with other students on their university journeys. Q: How can PASS sessions help students? PASS provides a connection between students distanced by online study allowing them to collaborate towards a common goal of learning. Q: What is your biggest tip for staying consistent with your studies? Work out the priorities in your life and where study can fit into this this will help you prioritise your time. Q: What career path do you hope to lead into after your degree? A career of learning from regenerative farmers on how they read landscapes and use tools to manage their land. I am really interested in the future of agriculture in sustaining rural communities and healthy landscapes and seeing the potential of regenerative agriculture to balance farm profitability and landscape function. Thanks Krishna for the chat! BIOL110 students can access their PASS sessions through Moodle, or find out more about their program @PASSUNE!

09.01.2022 UNE's Palaeoscience Research Centre have discovered that sauropods once roamed in the North-West region of New South Wales. A study of opalised teeth found near the town of Lightning Ridge has helped Lecturer in Earth Science Dr Nicolas Campione and PhD candidate Timothy Frauenfelder, discover more about the largest known dinosaur to walk the earth. Pretty cool hey! "Opalised fossils are a rich source of palaeontological information. For decades, miners have excavated these... fossils including the sauropod teeth we studied from deep underground its opal fields." Dr Campione and Mr Frauenfelder wrote in a recent article in The Conversation. The teams observation of the differentiation in the opalised teeth further uncovered that there were three different species of sauropods that called Lightening Ridge home. Read on about the discovery, and the teams research in the area https://okt.to/wBRU1h

05.01.2022 A big win for palaeontology *laughs in Jeff Goldblum* A long speculated fossil, the 'Duelling Dinosaurs,' has been acquired by a North Carolina museum after years in private hands. The fossil depicts a T-Rex and Triceratops locked in combat. Whether they were fighting when they met their end, or if the two carcasses were intertwined posthumously has long been questioned. Now scientists have the opportunity to study the fossil and find out!... Full National Geographic article here: https://okt.to/yzJPYC
