25.01.2022 Saturdays are fitness talk and today let’s chat hiking. Deep Creek Conservation Park is about an hour from me. It’s a wild and windswept coastal park with steep trails down to beaches and coves. New Year’s Day was a grade four descent into Deep Creek Cove. We saw kangaroos at the top, and dolphins cruised by as we sat on weird and wonderful rocks at the bottom.... The power of the ocean was exhilarating and we spent an age watching the waves surge and crash. I love exploring this Fleurieu park where you can simply stop for a picnic, or hike for as long as you like. It’s also a much-loved trail and people from all over the world hike, camp, then hike on again. It’s been a place I’ve visited with Une Femme Retreats too. If you are an SA local, get in touch and we can organise a group adventure. What a way to start 2021 See more
24.01.2022 It’s a sad fact that by Day Three of this brand new, beautiful year, I saw ugliness that made my blood boil. I had just finished shopping at Goolwa Woolies and was leaving the self serve checkouts. I heard the attendant remind people that only two people can be at a checkout. As I walked away, I heard her remind a dad who was scanning items with four of his kids. The children were aged from around 11 to 17, at least, that’s what they looked like to me.... The attendant told him about the two person request, and suggested the children step just outside the store. He said no. She explained it was a requirement. He responded, saying his children were not going to go anywhere without him. It was at this point that I had to speak up. I walked over and asked him to be a little more kind as she was simply doing her job. He wouldn’t back down. I said I’d be happy to step outside with the teenagers, and wait for him. They’re not going anywhere with you either, he countered. The attendant saw she wasn’t getting anywhere but asked again. The man said the store should have a sign up, saying only two people would be allowed at a checkout. It all seemed so unnecessary and so unkind. The request is there to keep us safe.. It’s all about avoiding overcrowding and allowing space for social distancing. It makes sense. Whether we agree with this or not, it’s just the way it is. I’m happy to go along with health office recommendations. It’s not hard and if it might just help, I’m all in. I’ve heard so many similar shopper-rage stories from friends who work in retail. These are tough enough days, but if everyone can be just a little kinder, I’m sure it will help. I ended up walking away, saying I so admired how she does her job. I’m guessing that guy has his reasons for acting the way he did. I know all of us have bad days. But taking out frustrations on someone just doing their job? I really can’t see an excuse for that. 24.01.2022 I’m amazed at how something as tiny as a sandfly can rock my boat. These teeny tiny critters had a field day on my legs as I worked out on the beach at Elliott Heads on Friday. By Saturday, the welts has appeared, the blisters and by last night, itching went into overdrive. To say I was miserable most of yesterday puts it mildly! Aside from the crazy-making itchiness, I felt like a freak show with these 50-plus bites decorating my legs.... So I took Charlie’s advice and grabbed every deterrent and medication from the nearest pharmacy. I spent the day covered in bushmans gel, spray, Aeroguard and nifty little bracelets full of essential oils. Another strategy was distraction ... learning how to play backgammon. Score was two games to me, one to Charlie ... but I know he let me win! Another medication that seemed to help was two glasses of Sav Blanc. So today I’ve woken up with a better attitude. (Check out the quote!) The bites are still there but they go eventually. In the meantime, we will be searching 1770 for a wave. Or at least a swim. The little critters won’t get me in the ocean and I know a bit of salty water will soothe my soul ... and my legs See more
23.01.2022 Care to share any New Year Resolutions? My list was 20 in 2020. This time it’s just one. I’ll be buying a swear jar. I sure do know I can’t control many things nowadays.... But cleaning up my language? Yep, I can act on that. It’ll be a dollar for the F bomb. After much thought, I’ll say Penguins instead for all those F bomb moments of frustration. Or even better, I might borrow a few Shakespearean insults ... these are superb! Over to you See more
23.01.2022 Fitness Saturday is about making lemonade from lemons ... and making new friends. There’s no doubt Covid rocked our worlds. We were handed the sour fruit of a pandemic. It’s been tough months for most of us, but I hope many of us have made lemonade. For me, Covid was a shake up to make huge life changes, which resulted in me moving into online fitness.... Une Femme Fitness has run almost daily sessions through Facebook live since March 22. I didn’t plan for this to happen. But when lockdown started, I knew many gym friends would need a daily dose of fitness. When gyms reopened, I set up the business side of online classes, charging $7 a week for a daily session. Every single day, I’ve loved teaching a huge range of workouts from ZUU to aerobics, weights and boot camps. I feel crazy blessed to be doing this. As my new life takes shape, these online classes will be done on the road. I’ve met so many wonderful people when I’ve been exercising away. Classes have been done on the Sunny Coast, Elliott Heads, Agnes Water, Emu Park and today, from Great Keppel Island. Yesterday was one of my faves as I did an Abs Butts and Thighs session from Rosslyn Bay ferry terminal. I’d chatted to a beautiful woman called Elsa as I waited till it was time to teach. Just before I started, her friends and family rocked up. Less than a minute into the warm up, Caroline, Jess, Pascale and Micayla were squatting, lunging and planking with me. It was magic and a memory I’ll treasure forever See more
21.01.2022 Sundays are often cruisey days to slow up, take a breath and ponder. Today, I can’t help but ponder on how lucky we are in Australia. We are mostly able to travel within our home states. And after nearly 57 trips around the sun, I have to say Australia still bedazzles me. The pandemic means overseas travel is a no go right now.... Like many Aussies, I had international trips cancelled due to Covid. Now, over six months into the pandemic, I’m not so sure I’ll be flying overseas by choice anytime soon. (even if it was permitted.) There are so many corners of this country to explore. This weekend on Great Keppel Island has been a revelation. It’s roughly 650kms and a 30-minute ferry ride from the sunny coast. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. We have hiked, snorkelled, swam in a world class pristine environment. It’s so chilled here and so cheap! A cabin on the beachfront was under $180 a night. Dinner for two under $50, watching the sun go down over the mainland. We missed happy hour at the bar so paid a whopping $18 for a cocktail and a coke. I really think there can be no better time to explore this land. I’m guessing prices are low to encourage tourism. It feels like a privilege to spend some money here in Oz to do a little bit to support our economy. So question for you ... where in Oz do you recommend a visit? Let’s make a list and start some Sunday travel dreaming See more
20.01.2022 Nutrition Tuesday on this page. Today’s topic is burgers. It’s hard to get a bad one if you’re out. Really hard to make a bad one at home. As we get into our trip, we are figuring out easy food on the move.... I’m so glad burgers feature bigtime. Rainbow Beach and Bretts Burger joint will get a repeat visit on our trip back south. I’m loving these vego burgers from the supermarket here in Agnes Water some nights. Just add great bread and a salad. Then fire up the Weber and that’s dinner in a flash! More time for backgammon ... I was leading but it’s all square now See more
20.01.2022 Une Femme Fitness talks fitness on Wednesdays. Today’s message is connected to the van life trip. It’s about doing whatever fitness activities that work for us to maximise our chance for living our best life. In a nutshell, the trip has brought home to me how important it is to stay fit, strong and mobile if we want to travel well. If we want to live our everyday lives well, come to that.... I seriously thank my stars that I’ve managed to stay fit so that I can enjoy these travel years to the max. The physicality of this type of travel has surprised me. I’m loving it, but I know full well how much harder it would be with a sore back, dodgy knees, less fitness etc. There’s the stepping up into the bus itself. The crawling into the passenger seat/cabin. We walk and ride our bikes heaps, plus surf every chance we get. Packing up means climbing a ladder to get on top of the bus, haul the boards up and secure them. I’m so glad we are doing this trip and planning more into the next few years. We have the health, fitness and mobility to get the most out of this adventure. I remember once buying a share of a luxury catamaran from a couple who had a dream to sail it endlessly. But almost immediately, the reality of trying to sail with horror hips and dodgy knees meant the dream never happened. The catamaran became a bobbing picnic bench in a Tin Can Bay berth. It’s a sad image, and reminder to do everything possible to make our dreams come true. Exercising could well be a major factor in whether we get to live our those dreams or not. PS: I’m not anti laze-by-the-pool-with-a-cocktail holidays. But I def prefer this See more
19.01.2022 It never seems to go well for me. This moving of the clocks forward or back or whatever often catches me out. Sunday was no exception. I was awake, but my alarm went off as normal at 5am. ‘Funny’ I thought.... ‘I’m sure it was lighter at this time yesterday.’ So I woke Charlie, just to see if he thought the same. He didn’t say much, just took the cup of coffee and so our day began. By 7am, we were getting ready for a walk. ‘Funny how the sun’s still not up,’ I said. ‘It definitely was yesterday.’ Only then did Charlie figure out what had happened. My phone was set to SA time. Infact, it was 6am, not 7am at all. I’d woken Charlie at 4am, not 5am. I can top this though. A few years back, I was due to catch a flight from Adelaide to the Sunny Coast. The clocks did their thing and I was an hour behind schedule to make it the 70-plus kms to the airport. Bless mum’s heart, she drove like Stirling Moss and I made it, just as the gate was closing. I was breathing like a train as I took my seat, literally having an exercise-induced asthma attack from the airport sprint. Will I ever learn? I guess we will see what happens in six months’ time See more
17.01.2022 This is the first Monday of Une Femme On Walkabout. The bus hit the road Wednesday and the trip is a ‘shake down’ to iron out any issues. So far, we have stayed at Rainbow Beach, Elliott Heads, 1770 and today we are in Agnes Water. (We have heard waves are due today for a few days ) All in all, it’s going pretty well. ... We are stoked to have our bikes with us as they are getting used more than our sups. Worst thing has been the sandfly attack on me - Charlie hasn’t been hassled by them - but I’m learning heaps and thank everyone for their tips. Charlie says he wants to tweak a few things on the bus, like storage and the bathroom door. But in my opinion, and the gazillion fellow travellers who can’t help but pop over for a look, this bus is supremely well crafted. He’s so skilled. I’m so proud of his transformation of this school bus into an amazing motor home. Down the track, we are embarking on a business of making teardrop campers and fitting out vans for camping adventures. He has all the skills, while I’ll be figuring out our to market them. Changing subject, slowing down has been weirdly harder than expected. It’s that realisation of not having to be anywhere at anytime that’s unusual, especially for Charlie. I’m keeping my routine of teaching online daily. It’s never ever a chore and I am loving exercising outdoors every day. Yesterday was a blissful mix of yoga and ZUU. Today is Tabata using seven of my favourite moves. The walkers and runners at 1770 might think I’m a bit odd. I’m happy to say they are right. Normal is overrated! See more
16.01.2022 There are times you just have to be in nature. That can be feeling grass under your feet, rolling around in sand, swimming in the ocean or walking through forests. It always feels so grounding to connect with the elements. So how could I resist a beach babe boot camp Tabata at Elliott Heads. There were leg blasting frog squats and rhino step squats.... Bear crawling and running back and forth, plus ab work. I’m not sure what passers by thought but I was having a ball. By chance, Charmaine was in town too so we had a laugh together. Plans were for a surf after, but the wind put paid to those plans. It was a one wave day for me then the wind started howling! At least kite surfers were happy See more
14.01.2022 And so it begins! First training sesh for the Great Southern Half Marathon on May 16 is done. I swear I loved every step of my barefoot jog/walk along the beach. Clyde was amazing, trotting along beside me. The event features the 21.1km half marathon, plus 5km and 10km options.... You can run or walk too. So who’s in? I’ll be writing up a training program to help people get started. I’m hoping Spa Clubs staff and members will get on board, plus any other FB buddies. And if you are coming from interstate, you are welcome to bunk in at my place. Message me for more details or comment below to get this exciting show on the road See more
14.01.2022 The couch is closed! It’s the new phrase for my fitness biz ... thanks Immy for inventing it. It’s awesome how kids love love love getting active. Immy just didn’t want to stop doing ZUU yesterday ... bless her heart ... #zuufitness #inspireoneinspiremany #fitness #workout #thecouchisclosed #bearcrawls
10.01.2022 Une Femme is ‘On Walkabout’ right now! Just did our third night in the bus and today, home is parked up in Elliott Heads. Friday’s are about nutrition on this page. There’s no doubt routines fly out the window when travelling. I’ve figured out a couple of tips to eat well on the road and avoid endless takeaways and other pitfalls.... Number one is salad bowls! Pop into any Aldi and there are delicious bowls of goodness for a few bucks. I’m loving their wellness bowls for lunch. To keep things easy at night, grab stir fry mix, diced chicken and soy sauce. Cook up a rainbow-coloured storm in a flash on the outdoor gas burner. Add to that fresh fruit from the Farmers Market in Maryborough and I have to say, nutrition boxes are ticked. Btw, did you know Maryborough is the birthplace of Mary Poppins? Or that it’s home to a war memorial that rivals Canberra? It’s a town well worth a visit See more
10.01.2022 Well, it had to happen one day. Eight months into doing live online classes and I had a wardrobe issue. The class was originally called Weights On Wednesday. But it’s now referred to as The Great Escape. There I was, doing dumbbell chest presses.... All was fine and then I lifted my head to check the timer. I noticed my right boob had escaped my crop top. Ever the professional (!) I kept going, then thought I’d best check the left. That one was saying hello too. What to do? Well, my first thought was, ‘This is a little embarrassing.’ Second thought, thank goodness it was on a private group, not my for-the-world-to-see Une Femme Fitness page. At the end of the set, I discretely sat uo. Then I belted you my car, where I kept my face mask. It’s a Happy Wrap brand, available from Maudie and Fox at Normanville. It’s like a bandeau and can be used as a face covering (which is what I use when shopping). It can also be used as a scrunchie, or a bandeau bra top. And that’s how I used it ... slipping it on over my crop top to teach the rest of the class, and a step class straight after. Oh the joys! Anyone else have a wardrobe mishap lately? Please share Ps: I love the blackboard outside Maudie and Fox. Wonderful quotes always See more
09.01.2022 Dear Clyde, Thank you for the photos you sent me recently. You sure look like you are living the dream with your house sitter friends. It’s lovely you can watch tv on the sofa. Not sure if that will continue when I get home.... So enjoy it for now. I miss you heaps and miss our long beach walks to Goolwa and Port Elliot. Glad to know lovely Elaine and Paul are as keen on walking as I am. Please give them a Clyde-style hug from me. Charlie and I are well into the shake down trip of the bus. You would love it here with lots of bush turkeys to play with. It is rather hot though so I think you’d need to have a serious shave if you were to head up this way. The bus is lovely. Lots of room but I still manage to bump my head frequently. Pain is a great educator so I’ll figure out the corners and edges soon. Sand flies have been an issue but I’m covered in deet and mozzie repelling oil so I think I’m safe now. Off to Great Keppel tomorrow. Taking two books and snorkels for lazy days reading and watching the fish. You would particularly love the fishing I think. I’ll sign off now, but see you on the 12th. Lots of love Mum See more
09.01.2022 Out of the mouths of babes. I heard a magic phrase yesterday and it came from a four-year-old. I was playing fitness (doing bear crawls up and down the hallway) with Immy. We also did planks and Joey jumps ... but after a while, I told her I needed a rest. ‘No Gigi,’ she said, running to the sofa, standing in front of it with arms outstretched.... ‘The couch is closed.’ I just loved it. It was magic seeing her into being active. I adored the way her brain worked. The couch is closed ... what a wonderful phrase. It’s a slogan for me now. I’ll recall it on the days when I choose the couch over jobs I know I need to do. So I’ll do the weeding today. My couch is closed, at least till later See more
07.01.2022 This gets called a gazillion names but to me, it’s always an English breakfast. Eggs, bacon, toast, sausage and a few extras and man, I could fight an army after this. It’s not, however, something I have often. I tend to pick just eggs, oats, açai or granola. But yesterday, we had an unexpectedly awesome surf at 1770 and all four of us worked up an appetite.... There’s something magic about sharing waves with great friends, then finding a cafe for breakfast. My kinda heaven See more
06.01.2022 Deep thoughts this Sunday and it’s this ... Nothing is wasted. This week, I have started running again. I realise all those years doing triathlons and marathons were not wasted. I know how to restart running safely. I know how to pace myself with breathing.... I’m aware of how my body responds to the stresses of running. Then my thoughts broadened out to other things I’ve done, and how they are part of life now. For example, I spent years learning piano. I was no musician ... adequate at best, but not gifted is how I’d sum up my skills. All that time with piano teacher Mr Gapper means I understand timing and beats and phrasing in music. It means I can hear music and pick what class it will suit. I generally get the phrasing right so aerobics or step or combat just feels ‘right’. And then there’s the years I spent as a journalist. It means I still enjoy writing. I love writing this blog. Now I have a little gig writing for the Yankalilla Regional News. I’m still working on a book too. It’s a wonderful thought that all we ever do is like storing skills and knowledge in a bank, ready to be used again and again and again See more
06.01.2022 Say hi to my hopalong bush turkey buddy! I met him after doing an online class from the top lookout at 1770. He reminded me to use Fitness Wednesday to chat about injuries. We may have weak spots ... my calves are prone to little tweaks, the result of decades teaching step and body attack. But working out in a gym should never cause an issue.... Sadly, there’s a cycle I see of people training, hurting themselves, doing rehab, going back to the gym (doing pretty much what they were doing in the first place), getting hurt again ... and on it goes. Une Femme advice is to always get injuries checked out by a great health professional. Understand what caused the issue. Learn the lesson. In my case, I’ve learned my calf will complain if I do high impact on a poor surface. So I avoid it as much as I can. Old injuries in my shoulder cleared up when I changed the way I train, using Bodyweight ZUU rather than lifting heavy. I believe exercising should be a fun, happy part of our day. Getting injured disrupts that and the happy buzz of working out disappears. Get in touch if you’d like a little more info. See more
04.01.2022 I have started the New Year in fresh new skin. A friend gave me an Ayurvedic Dry Brush for Chrissy. I gave it a whirl yesterday and it felt wonderful. Dry brushing does so much, but removing dead skin cells is one benefit. It felt symbolic to do my first dry brush on the last day of 2020.... All the old ‘stuff’ was going, letting new things take over. It may sound like a weird way to bring in a New Year but I sure do recommend giving it a try See more
04.01.2022 I feel like running. It’s an urge and I’m absolutely giving in to it. I used to be a long distance runner. I’ve completed several marathons and truly loved every one of them. None were easy but each gave me something magical.... Highlights include being cheered on by thousands in London, with bands belting out music every few hundred meters. Another was the sunrise start at Uluru, and completing the 42.2kms with five friends over a course which was mostly on sand. I stopped running regularly in 2012, switching out to other sports like road cycling and stand up paddle marathon racing. But lately, the urge to go left, right repeat is back. This week, I’ve started slowly in exactly the same way I train clients new to running. Walk 20 paces, then run 20. I’m choosing to barefoot run at low tide on hard sand. It is awesome, splashing through little waves, with Clyde jogging alongside. It’s a bliss for me. All this said, I do not believe running is for everyone. I’m lucky to never have had an injury through running, but I know some people have knee or ankle or hip issues that make it plain painful. In my opinion, a good brisk walk can be just as effective for your fitness as a jog. It can also be faster ... try keeping up with some walkers I know. Gee whizz they can stride it out! As always, please get in touch if you would like more info. See more
01.01.2022 Let’s have a hump day warm and fuzzy! I saw this postcard recently and it got me thinking big time. Who would you choose to share a bench with and chat? I have a long, long list and I look forward to the days I can catch up with old friends and natter. If I could sit on the bench in the UK, ... I’d share grandma stories with Judith. We have been friends since we were little tackers and now we are both grannies. Then there’s Maria and Carol and the crew I’d go to Street Youth Club discos with when we were ever so cool teenagers. And Sandra in the US, both of us with adults not kiddies nowadays asour children are all grown up. And that’s just the start of my list of bench buddies. Daydreaming, such a cool thing to do See more
