22.01.2022 Last week the SMART Farm has been super busy. We have had visits from two schools in conjunction with Far Out Science, the food recycle field day, workshops as part of the ACIAR JAFfel program, a visit from Sundown Pastoral and Hancock agriculture to discuss developments and future pasture biomass space. We love sharing ideas with people in industry and showing the next generation whats possible. If you, or your company haven't been to the farm lately then don't miss out on the open day next Friday. This event is a fantastic opportunity to quench those curiosities about the SMART Farm and see what goes on out here.

20.01.2022 The next generation of Australian Farmers are well and truly in the works! Primary school aged children will benefit from a new three-year education program called Kids to Farms, which will give them first-hand experience of the agriculture sector and the paddock-to-plate journey. The program has highlighted the importance of children having access to physically visiting a farm, and opening their eyes to the possibilities in agribusiness and farming. ... At UNE, we are lucky to have our SMART Farm programs that involve school aged children, and so this initiative is well received! Read on https://okt.to/h6ACmU

16.01.2022 Last week, the entire Niangala Primary School (all four of them) visited UNE Smart Farm. The students enjoyed a day full of adventure and excitement with Operations Manager, Alison Stewart. During their visit the students saw the collars used to monitor sheep movement and the cameras that are used to do facial recognition on dogs. They were particularly enthusiastic when it came to using their problem solving skills to program a small drone to fly a U shaped pattern across a theoretical paddock inside. It was such a pleasure to show them all the exciting things we do out at the Smart Farm and hope they come and visit again soon!

10.01.2022 Last week SMART Farm staff participated in an electric bike trial! A trial into two-wheeled electric bikes has been underway to find a safer and greener alternative to quad bikes, with low running costs. The joint trial between Meat and Livestock Australia, Donor company and The Kondinin Group and Electric Offroad Bikes. ... The electric bikes are lighter, have no gears, limited power and speed and are easy to ride, compared to traditional recreational and agricultural two-wheeled bikes. These bikes will expand farmers ability to selecting the correct machine for the task, drastically reduce operating costs of personal transport, reduce on-farm fatalities and enable farmers to move around the farm and muster sheep and cattle in relative peace and quiet. This farm trial is to assess the different styles of electric bikes for personal transport and mustering, on grazing properties. There are around 15,000 quad bikes sold in Australia annually, here has only been one new, two wheeled petrol Ag bike developed in 20 years. Electric bikes could be an alternative to quad bikes as there have been over 240 quad bike related deaths in Australia, and over 600 hospitalized injuries per year. That is a huge statistic! The cost of quad bike and side by side deaths and injuries in Australia is estimated to be $208 million annually. The trial will be on five properties to demonstrate/test/evaluate the bikes on grazing operations. The Kondinin Group will do an in depth research assessment and report. Results will be published in Farming Ahead and FeedBack, magazines. Videos and information as it comes to hand, will be on Facebook: Electric offroad Bikes and www.electricoffroadbikes.com.au Following the trial, We will be putting together bulk orders of bikes, including finance and warranty, with secondary manufacture to suit farmer needs. This is an Exciting New Electric Future! The photos are of SMART Farms Tech Manager Derek Schneider (in blue short), Armidale SMART Farms Manager Paul Arnott (in green short) and Justin Hoad (in the Akubra) who organised the trial. Thanks to the NEGS students and the UNE academics who gave their time to share their knowledge in Agtech.
