24.01.2022 BEHIND THE SCENES When the client prefers to not engage a town planner for their project (although we very much prefer to work in a team of professionals for the best outcome), we take on the report writing and Council liaison. Sometimes, we even help clients put up the advertising sign if they cannot do it themselves. ... Recycling our fixing post is not something we were imagining doing when thinking about architecture, but it definitely goes well with our view on not wasting resources. Oh, did we mention architects do not just draw? #architecture #behindthescenes #recycle #architecturalpractice #melbournearchitecture #melbournedesign #design #advertisingboard See more

24.01.2022 How courageous are you when it comes to COLOUR? It is one of those topics that makes us feel either scared or excited. We all heard about the benefits of colour, but there is also the fear of too much or mismatch. ... Colour can be very polarising in discussions and it is definitely not a safe option when it comes to bright primary colours in interiors. If you feel a bit insecure but want to push your boundaries and experiment, start with your furniture or artwork. Try one piece, then two and see where that takes you. It helps if you analyse the existing colours in your space first and try to have a cohesive approach for your home or at least the living areas. The photo is a snippet from one of the artwork pieces we selected to go next to a black dining table and chairs for our lovely clients. We simply it! 19.01.2022 Unfold Architecture turned 3 today. 3 years of exactly what this photo of my youngest son depicts: JOY. Unfold is first and foremost about bringing joy in your life, about discovering beauty together and what that means for you. ... Our way of approaching architecture starts with questioning how different aspects defining a space impact your wellbeing, your relationships, your day to day mood and habits. Thank you for allowing us to be the witnesses of your joy, your story unfold. We will be posting an ad for a new person to join our team in January 2021. 16.01.2022 STORIES OF OUR LIVES Michele is not the greatest cook. She knows this, but does not avoid the kitchen. ... I prepare our dinner, while she goes through the latest medical break-through discoveries or interior design tips. I love my cooking and her thirst for knowledge in any field. We can still talk for hours, even after 12 years together. Sometimes, Mary joins us after school. She takes over an island corner and makes it her ad-hoc study nook for the evening. It’s good that we taught her how to focus with music in the background. I think she enjoys the smell of freshly cut parsley and hear us talking and having a laugh. I wonder if she’ll be tempted to become a chef. Well, who knows? Her life, her dreams, her passions. In the meantime, I wish I could paint, to capture this image of us together around the island bench, just being happy. #12Montgomery #comingsoon #interiordesign #design #wellbeing #together #family #melbournedesign #melbourneinteriors #townhouse #interiors #ensuite #kitchen #australiandesigned #archilovers #homedesign Building Design: Instinctive Creations Interior Design: @unfoldarch Landscape Design: @outward_design 3D Renders: @nanamistudio3d Branding: @studio.payne Developer: EVE Holdings See more

16.01.2022 We should call this The Tree House now that it comes to life. You are looking at a partial demolition, reconfiguration plus small extension of a beautiful single storey house in Hawthorn. The three smaller photos are our casual ones taken during one of our pre-design site visits. ... The gorgeous one at the top is our client’s, shared with us today. The main goal was to create better connected living areas, a feeling of spaciousness without reducing the size of the garden too much. Through a collaborative approach between the clients, the builder and us and simple, yet effective gestures, we are achieving what you see. We are bringing the garden in, we are opening the interiors to the beautiful northern light, while protecting it from the summer sun and the western heat. This project is most of all about that unique connection with their garden and we just love how it is coming along. #architecture #archilovers #extension #residentialarchitecture #design #melbournearchitecture #homes #melbournedesign #australianhomes #homedesign #architecturedesign @unfoldarch @the_urbanleaf See more

15.01.2022 We knew we would have a good collaboration with this particular client when we saw the way he built the fence extension around the existing front tree. He did not choose to remove it and plant a new smaller one like we often see nowadays. We were appointed for the design, town planning and building permit approvals of the first floor extension. ... It was approved exactly as intended and it is lovely to see the client updating us on the progress The real hero of this property, though, remains the sculptural tree at the front. 11.01.2022 STORIES OF OUR LIVES There was a shiver down my spine when I realised that the very room we sit in was my childhood dream. My grandma’s attic was my favourite room - a place of discovery; my safe haven, the room that became a castle, a barricade or ad-hoc shop whenever we wanted. ... It smelled of tea leaves and hidden treasures and there was something magical in that golden light that made the wooden floors even warmer. I am now holding a cup of peppermint tea, looking out the balcony, enjoying the company of my two best friends and watching our kids play together. I wonder if, without realising, I’ve always dreamt of one day having a room like that myself. Not sure if it is the raked ceiling, the light timber floor, the warm happy colours we chose for the room or just everything put together. Can’t stop smiling now and probably I don’t even want to. I feel like a cheeky child who just tricked time, Aladdin who just discovered a lamp. The sky is turning red as my thoughts wander. #12Montgomery #comingsoon #interiordesign #design #wellbeing #colour #together #family #melbournedesign #melbourneinteriors #townhouse #interiors #retreat #australiandesigned #archilovers #homedesign Building Design: Instinctive Creations Interior Design: @unfoldarch Landscape Design: @outward_design 3D Renders: @nanamistudio3d Branding: @studio.payne Developer: EVE Holdings See more

09.01.2022 We need natural light to be and feel well. Your plans for your future home or renovation should start exactly here: not with the sizes of rooms, not with the finishes or appliances, but with understanding the solar orientation of your site and its implications on the design. ... We have seen too many people asking for opinions on floor plans or offering feedback on bathroom layouts or storage, without even discussing the solar orientation of the rooms. We have seen floor plans that look good on paper if no north point is indicated, but have dark and mouldy living areas once built and bedrooms that overheat in the afternoons. A smaller space with appropriate natural light access will always feel better than one that is larger and poorly lit. For the same reason, it sells better, too. While having a northern orientation for your backyard is usually ideal, there are design solutions to make any solar orientation work. If you are unsure why, where and how, let’s have a chat. #architecture #design #naturallight #wellbeing #interiors #homes #residentialdesign #houses #residentialarchitecture Photo: Greg Rosenke (Unsplash) See more

07.01.2022 Happy Hump Day, beautiful people! Delightful visit today to our lovely clients, coordinating artwork placement and checking light fixture deliveries. Every little detail can make a difference in how you perceive a space and how you feel when spending time in it. ... Did you pay attention to how the colour of your sheers, curtains or blinds impacts how heavy a room feels? Did you ask yourself if they achieve their intended heat or glare isolation goal? Does their colour make the room more spacious, brings the attention to the windows or rather to other elements of the interior? #interiors #architecture #wellbeing #colour #melbournedesign #design #details #melbournearchitecture #interiordesign See more

05.01.2022 What do you stand for?

04.01.2022 STORIES OF OUR LIVES Some days, especially in summer, I wake up very early and have a bath. It is my secret pleasure, time for uninterrupted reading and sometimes business planning. The kids are asleep still.... I look out the window and anticipate the warm weather and an unexpected surprise. Maybe I will get that invite I was hoping for. It is such a great event! I scribble a few notes in my journal and start drawing the idea that was still so real when I woke up. Transferring dreams into images to work towards... something worth an early alarm. I feel calm and in control of my thoughts. Maybe I can keep this feeling with me for most of the day. Something not as easy to do nowadays. But the tops of the tree I can get a glimpse of, the sound of the birds calling out for the day to start, the scented candle next to me and my favourite music, the acknowledgment that I gave myself permission to start the day with my journal rather than school bags, these all make me feel on top of the mountains again. A feeling I can have right in the comfort of my home if I choose to. 03.01.2022 STORIES OF OUR LIVES Lazy mornings - this is why I love Sundays so much. This and the smell of fresh coffee that Edward now makes for us on the weekends. I opened the doors to the terrace, but the breeze does not seem to bother the boys. Must be warm outside already. ... I just love seeing them play together while John helps me prepare breakfast. We’re having toast avo this morning, our family favourite. Might just include a fresh orange juice in the mix. Later, we might go out for a walk, finish that movie we started watching or have another try at winning a chess game against Mike. Ahh, the excitement of endless possibilities! The giggles have moved to the dining table. 01.01.2022 As we close the door of our office for 2 weeks, we reflect on the changes this year brought to the work environment. Having the space for a home office would become an expectation, similar to the island bench in most of our kitchens. Can we imagine it as a flexible space, though? One that can accommodate a couch if older parents need to live with us in the future? Can it be an office, a play room, a zen room through different years of our life? ... It surely can, if we think about time as a factor that impacts how we perceive our homes. We can plan for flexibility, we can plan for spaces for one to share just with their thoughts, to have control over, to recharge and to feel good in. #12Montgomery #comingsoon #interiordesign #design #wellbeing #together #family #melbournedesign #melbourneinteriors #townhouse #interiors #study #homeoffice #australiandesigned #archilovers #homedesign Building Design: Instinctive Creations Interior Design: @unfoldarch Landscape Design: @outward_design 3D Renders: @nanamistudio3d Branding: @studio.payne Developer: EVE Holdings See more
