11.01.2022 Cyber Security and Telehealth Patients who are concerned about the security of their video call with a doctor should not use Skype. Skype calls can and are being intercepted and stored around the world. See our telehealth website for more information on security in telehealth http://www.e-unicare.com.au/faq-and-resources/ Skype has no quality control, no help desk if the call is interrupted, and the user has no access to any information about what happened to the call. Havin...g said that, Skype can still be useful in an emergency if nothing else is available, so if someones life or health was at risk in a rural area and bringing a doctor in via Skype would be beneficial, it is good to have this option available. However it should not be anyones first choice for a routine video consultation. In regard to use of other equipment, the presenter mentioned that his company was thinking about initiating a stroke check which could be accessed in pharmacies through the ability to take a single lead ECG. This is not clinically correct; perhaps they were meaning to refer to chest pain and heart attack? If so, then a single lead ECG might be of use in diagnosing chest pain; it is not the way to diagnose a stroke. But in any case if a person has chest pain, it is NOT the right thing to do to pause to get an ECG taken in a pharmacy. The correct action is to dial 000 and call an ambulance. If anyone is thinking about using other devices to help examine a patient at a distance, such as an otoscope (also known as an auriscope: for looking in ears), it is really important that these be used properly. It is not just plug-and-play: some training is needed for accurate results.
