16.01.2022 Covid-19 hey? What a nightmare. Photographing people in a mask is annoying. Now I know what people who wear glasses go through. My third job for the year was to photograph some people recently (not all fireys, so relax) in some different settings on fire stations around Melbourne. Mainly to be used for the upcoming MFB Annual Report (before the transition to a FRV Annual Report next year), but some other photos will be used in different literature and online. The final shot o...f the day was of Cameron. He's an Acting Commander at VEMTC - Craigieburn, in charge of Infrastructure and Corporate Services at Fire Rescue Victoria. He also just notched up 37 years in the job last week. Not bad. So got the stock-standard photos in front of some flags, in front of a truck. But that's pretty stock-standard. So what do you do when you want to do something different, and you're at a training centre? Turn on some fire. Luckily there were some recruits undergoing some training out the back, so we got permission while they were in the middle of drills, and got the fire burning. 20 seconds, and we were out of there. The wind was a nightmare, and sun was behind Cameron, so had to whip out the small softbox and prey it didn't blow over. And it worked. Don't worry, back to photographing birds and planes as the fly over home next week.

15.01.2022 As the sun sets on another beautiful day, the start of a new week beckons with the 'ring of steel' being lifted around Metropolitan Melbourne. And not before time too... I have to head regional tomorrow for a shoot in Morwell covering a job for Fire Rescue Victoria. I was slowly getting over having to fill out permits to leave my home for work. :-) Starting to get whispers of some new jobs coming up which is fantastic. Not quite fully into the swing of things yet, but getting... there. And hopefully with lifting of some more restrictions later on this month, I may need to advertise again to once again travel all over the state shooting our emergency services again. The sunset photo? My son wanted to take his camera out and gaffa tape it to his tripod to shoot the countryside. So threw him in the car, and off we went for the 5min drive into Toolern Vale. We have so many beautiful areas to shoot in this country... get out there before it's all housing estates. Actually, that was one of the comments as I was heading to a fire today... new estates are popping up everywhere! Geez, I really go off track don't I? Have a grouse week citizens!

12.01.2022 Well, what a weekend. Yesterday, shooting the last of the Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters graduate after 10 months. Yes, 10 months. Covid was a real downer for them, but I know they're all glad to graduate and get on station protecting Victorians.... Today, started off in the rain, shooting some kidlets for Christmas cards. Fantastic area to shoot, but Huey wasn't on our side to get everything we needed. Maybe next year. And it wouldn't be the first time my shoot-through brolleys have been used as 'brolleys' too due to rain. At least they have more than one use. Then, this arvo, straight down to Avalon to shoot some images for Coulson Aviation. Some quality people down there. And I got to see a couple of choppers, one flying straight in from the docks in Melbourne. Restrictions are loosening a touch more, which has slowly brought in a bit more work, which is grouse. But we mustn't be complacent or we'll be back to square one. And I need to photograph fire engines! Stay Safe and 'ave a grouse week everyone. *thanks to Heather and Natalie for the BTS photos too.

11.01.2022 During the recent bushfires in the east of the state, the Australian Islamic Centre, and Human Appeal International made the trek to deliver truckloads of goods to the bushfire affected communities in places like Johnsonville, Buchan, Lakes Entrance, etc. Recently, the Australian Federal Police contacted me for some images to use for an upcoming documentary and exhibition, shining a light on what was done, and how the bushfires affected everyone. With a film crew in tow, we t...ravelled all over the area, seeing the devastation, while I just sat in the background, chatting and shooting away. If you're in the emergency services, you'll know that after an emergency, and you're back home, you don't hear anything about any outcomes of the jobs you've been to. So everyone jumped at the chance to head back out there and see the communities, and how they're coping with the aftermath. The people there were fantastic! Just so full of resilience. But still hurting in places. The landscape was still very scarred, but was slowly becoming green again. If you get a chance, head out that way, spend some time there... I know I will.

09.01.2022 You know what they say about working with kids or animals. Yup...it's true. The family wanted some school photos done this week due to the restrictions being enforced at schools that school photos couldn't be done for 2020.... *A lot of 'school' in that paragraph. So pulled out the background, set up some lights, and told the kidlets to smile. This is why I'm going bald. At least I got a few good photos out of it. But thankfully, it seems school photos are going to start being allowed, which is bloody good. Because I could never do it! It seems my son also likes to pull out the camera and shoot some 'school photos' too. Yup, teach a kid to take up photography, and they'll never need to smoke, drink or do drugs because they won't have anymore bloody money left over to do those things. Tomorrow, back to work shooting some recruit fireys all day at the College. Should be good. Have a good week citizens.

03.01.2022 Needless to say, it's not every day when the phone goes and it's a Detective Sergeant from the Federal Police on the other end. Seems they're after a few images from a recent shoot (when I say recent, I mean January). That gave me a little boost for the day. So pulled out the camera 'after homeschooling', and while the young bloke was doing laps of the oval across the road on his bike, I decided to shoot some flowers. Granted, they're weeds, but they looked grouse as they bl...anketed the grass. And while I was down there on my fat guts, some bees decided they wanted their photos taken too. I'm pretty useless with the Macro lens. Only due to the fact I never really use it. But I'd love to learn to use it more. Better take it out again tomorrow. Apart from that, not much happening work-wise. Which of course give me the irits. Phone goes every now and again with shoots that were planned 6 months ago, and I just have to ignore them. Depressing, yes. But we must push forward. Maybe bees are my future. Stay Safe Citizens.

02.01.2022 Birds. One thing I have learnt to appreciate from the lockdown, is birds. Over the weekend, I've spotted a couple of different types. The natural, and the mechanical. And they're both bloody awesome!... While out on assignment yesterday in the far reaches of the east of the state, we happened across a couple of Kookaburras just minding their own business. Hit the anchors as we drove past them. Grabbed the camera, and snuck up to them. Absolutely fantastic things. And another bird just going about it's business sniffing out some flowers on a tree. I'm definitely no ornithologist, but our state and country has some pretty great birds to see. And today, while catching up with some good friends, we saw the other types of birds at the local airport. Always in awe about how they even get off the ground! The ring of steel is down. The state's a little safer. Get out there and see it. Spend a bit of coin in a local shop, they certainly need it. And, as always, get that camera ready to shoot our marvellous country we're all lucky to be living in! Back to work again this week shooting a few things for government. Better go and charge those batteries. Stay Safe.

01.01.2022 Lockdowns. They certainly have their ups-and-downs. But this week has certainly been an 'up' with the allowance of outside photography again.... Bloody rapt when I heard that! This past Monday, I headed out to VEMTC - Craigieburn to photograph the latest bunch of Fire Rescue Victoria recruits undergoing their training before graduating next month. Terrific bunch of people, from the recruits, to the instructors, to the bosses. I certainly missed 'proper shooting'...hopefully it's the start of getting back into it. Hopefully, in the next week or so, restrictions might be lifted a little more (so long as everyone behaves themselves), so I might be able to photograph a bit more than birds from the front door, or my son on our bike rides. lol Stay Safe. Blair.
