01.01.2022 Cassie is the co-leader of OneStep Straws in Enactus. Here she shares her secret ingredient to delicious food "A memory embedded in my mind is barbecuing a Nando’s inspired chicken in the kitchen without any air-conditioning on a 44-degree summer day. I still wonder how I did not melt under the immense heat. Growing up my parents took every opportunity to get me and siblings to help them in the kitchen. Looking back, I always thought that helping my parents with cooking wa...s just a chore and a way to avoid copping a lecture. My parents’ favourite phrase Cook with love and care, it comes through in your food is deeply ingrained in my head. Back in my high school days, I was always confused about what does love got to do with food? Can you even taste love? But since being at university, I realised that my parents cooking lessons were hidden nuggets of invaluable lessons. My side hustle (without the supplementary income) of working as an assistant in the kitchen and designated dishwasher has taught me the importance of putting love and care into your work. The process of cooking requires at least 50 cups of patience and a stockpot of resilience because it is not guaranteed that you can recreate the exact dish on the first try. My parents cooking lectures have taught me that it’s okay to burn your ingredients and make a mistake, but it’s not okay to let a setback stop you from continuing cooking. On MasterChef, there are so many things that can possibly go wrong and it's important to cheer yourself on, bounce back, and to give it another go, and I believe the same goes for the challenges we encounter in life. I guess cooking for me has become less of a chore but more of a challenge. But as I got more in touch with cooking, I have discovered that pouring your heart into the process is the secret ingredient to delicious food. This serves as an important reminder for me to continue to put love and care into whatever I do, because now I know that it can make a difference in the world."
