25.01.2022 Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA stands in solidarity with young people going on strike to demand climate action around the globe today. Across the Asia-Pacific, we work with workers and communities on the frontlines of increasing climate chaos in their struggle for energy democracy and justice. Publicly-owned renewable energy systems must be a key part of the regional transition to low carbon economies. APHEDA stands with our partner organisations demanding that International Financial Institutions, such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), stop imposing a privatisation agenda through renewable energy. Instead, reliable grants-based funding must be made available for accountable governments to directly invest in new renewable energy such as solar and wind power. #FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrike

In 2018, the Australian government announced it would get tough on those caught illegally dumping asbestos. 08.01.2022 Sign and share! Myanmar has been living under military rule since its army launched a coup on February 1. Over 800 people have been brutally murdered and more than 5,000 have been imprisoned, with reports of torture and sexual violence. On 7 March 2021, the Australian government announced that its development program in Myanmar would be re-directed to immediate humanitarian needs, with and through non-government organisations, rather than the military junta or its related ent...ities. However, on 25 April 2021, the Australian government announced that it would provide A$5 million to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) for the provision of humanitarian assistance in Myanmar. This means $5M Australian aid funds will move through the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, currently under the junta’s control. The Myanmar community in Australia have launched this important petition to call on Australia to reverse this decision and ensure Australian aid funding is not delivered through the Myanmar junta. Please sign and share. https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/EN2788

03.01.2022 In Nepal, Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA works with CLASS Nepal to support unions to campaign for energy democracy. General Secretary, Parshuram Pudasaini, explains the impact of climate change on workers in Nepal: "The forests, bodies of water, and the biological diversity in our mountains are under threat from climate change. These are key sources of livelihood for working people in our country. When it’s obvious that the sustainability of our livelihoods is the least of the ...private sector’s priorities, it is when we realize how crucial public investments are to us as workers in union." While Janardhan Bhattarai, President of National Electricity Agency Employees Union in Nepal says: "The private electricity sector has failed to guarantee workers’ rights, even as they make massive profits from polluting the earth. We call for a just transition to renewable energy: by guaranteeing decent work to workers who are free to exercise trade union rights, the public could be assured of quality public services, while protecting the people’s and the earth’s health." 03.01.2022 "Far from staying silent, Australia should be using its status and leadership role in the region to call for strong action against the military regime... The time for action is now, before it is too late for my people." Ko Saulsman, a member of Australia’s Burmese diaspora #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar #Myanmar #Burma
