22.01.2022 Meet Rowan! Starting at age 17, he went away to sea on Merchant Cargo ships serving on over 80 different vessels travelling around Australia and Asia. It was on his early journeys out to sea that taught him the importance of Trade Unionism. The job he knew and love began to change when Australian Seafarers were replaced by cheap foreign labour. Workers were taken out by a hostile government, in collusion with foreign multinational shipping corporations, who hated to see a we...ll organised highly paid workforce. The industry in Australia went from having 89 large ships in 1990 to less than a dozen today serviced by Australian workers. He knew that not even 27 years of Seafarer experience could save him from losing his job. At 45 he became unemployed and lost at what to do. Thankfully, through the Maritime Union, he received another chance at life. He applied and was selected for the Graduate Traineeship with the Territory Labor Government. He had gone from working the deck of a ship, to working for the Deputy Chief Minister in Parliament house in the NT! He then became an Organiser for the United Workers Union where he remains today. He describes it as a dream come true. He spends half of his time as a Political Organiser and the other half as a Casino Organiser. Losing his career at sea made him realise how important politics is to workers, and the need for workers to organise in the political world. In his words We simply cant leave politics to politicians and corporations. Workers must engage. Because after all, it doesnt matter if you arent interested in politics politics is interested in you.

20.01.2022 As we enter more workplaces and schools, one thing we have really discovered is a lack of young industrially active voices in digital spheres. Over the coming weeks, tune in as we bring in national figures and local stake holders to chat about workers issues!

19.01.2022 Mirgrant workers are some of the most vulnerable workers in our work force. This community faces insecure employment arrangements, language and cultural barriers, discrimination and sometimes precarious visa arrangements. Unions NT came down last night to hold our industrial seminar to provide attendees the best weapon a worker can hold, knowledge of their rights! ... We were also very clear in saying the struggles faced by the migrant community are union struggles too! #union #theUnionisallofUs

19.01.2022 We call on the McGowan Government to reverse the decision to close Fremantle Port. We will not stand by while increased automation risks thousands of wharfie jobs. #Solidarity #UnionPower

19.01.2022 The Northern Territory requires at least two seats in the House of Representatives due to its sheer size and the widespread and diverse nature of its population. A single seat will make the NT the most underrepresented in Australia. This will be a huge loss for rural and remote communities due to a lack of representation. Imagine one person representing 245,562 electors and 1.4 million square kilometres of space. ... Sign and share to say that this is not right!

18.01.2022 The last thing we need is infectious people heading off to work because they cannot afford to stay at home. Until the virus has been and gone, workers will need support. It makes sense to extend JobKeeper and JobSeeker, from both an economic and public health perspective. ... If you agree, sign the petition! https://www.megaphone.org.au//coronavirus-extend-jobkeeper

16.01.2022 A valuable read for anyone confused by the Governments proposed freeze to the superannuation guarantee. Facts matter!

16.01.2022 This is the choice facing casual workers who may have come into contact with COVID-19. Australian Unions have warned about it for months, and its now evident that COVID-19 is being spread around workplaces where workers have are in insecure casual work and have no leave. Paid pandemic leave has now been won for aged care workers in a union win yesterday, but the Morrison Government must step up and provide paid pandemic leave for ALL workers. ... Unless paid pandemic leave is granted to all workers, people will be forced to choose between getting tested and isolating, or putting food on the table. Send an email to your MP and demand paid pandemic leave: https://utm.io/uHmA

Raise the Rate is an initiative started by the Australian Council of Social Service, calling on the Australian Government for a permanent and adequate raise to JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments. 13.01.2022 Asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think! Did you know if a house was built or renovated before 1990, there is a good chance it has some asbestos. Did you know it’s often found under flooring, as part of kitchen splashbacks or even in the garden? [change locations as desired]... This Asbestos Awareness Week, 23 29 November 2020, Unions NT is reminding tradies to be asbestos aware because it lurks in more places than you’d think. Work health and safety (WHS) laws prohibit work involving asbestos apart from in specific circumstances where you are required to follow strict safety rules. The law may also prevent you from removing asbestos yourself, and if you are allowed, you must follow strict safety precautions and use the right Personal Protective Equipment. Commercial and public buildings built before a certain date are required to have an asbestos register but that’s not the case for homes, even though they are often workplaces too. Asbestos becomes dangerous once the fibres are disturbed, become airborne and then inhaled. This can happen if you’re sanding, drilling, cutting or sawing asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and inhaling asbestos fibres can cause a number of life-threatening diseases including pleural disease, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Don't risk the possible health effects of asbestos exposure. The World Health Organization says there is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. Watch this video about asbestos exposure in the workplace here. https://vimeo.com/446982099 You wouldn’t do electrical wiring without training, the same is true for handling or removing any asbestos. It’s always safer and usually cheaper too to call in an asbestos professional. Find out more about asbestos in the workplace here : https://worksafe.nt.gov.au/safety-and-prevention/asbestos #AbestosKills

13.01.2022 Are you currently receiving JobKeeper? What has your experience been to date? How do you think the changes announced by the Morrison Government today will affect you? If youd like to share your story (you can do so confidentially), contact us via Messenger or by emailing [email protected]. 12.01.2022 Attention: ASU Members The ASU is calling on the Federal Government to continue funding Equal Pay increases into the future to protect jobs and services across the country. Community services are essential services. These workers have supported some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our society through a year of floods, fires and now a pandemic. Their organisations rely on Government funding to pay the Equal Pay wages they fought for and won back in 2012.... But the Federal Government has not committed to continue to fund their Equal Pay wages beyond December 2020. Because of this, the community services sector faces a massive funding shortfall of over $500 million which will impact over 100,000 jobs and countless essential services. The Federal Government can fix this in its Federal Budget in October. Join us in calling on them to properly fund Equal Pay and support essential community services workers! Sign the petition and find out how you and your workplace can get involved via the link below.

07.01.2022 Meet Lucas! Born and bred in the Territory, Lucas first joined a union when he started working at Casinos. He joined what was formerly the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU), now known as the United Workers Union (UWU). He had a string of bad bosses who had set out to attack workers wages, rights and conditions. This gave him a firsthand experience of worker injustice, igniting a passion for protecting workers rights and illuminating the importance o...f unionising for the betterment of workers rights and conditions. He then took up a role with the CPSU where he could share his passion and apply the lessons from his experiences. Hes now been with the CPSU for four years and wouldnt have it any other way. He says that working with members to gain collective power in their workplaces has been a privilege, adding that its not about what your union can do for you, its what you can do for your union. Power to you, Lucas!
