22.01.2022 In Victoria, business groups, unions and other key stakeholders are coming together to help rebuild their state following the pandemic. It’s a great idea to harness the co-operation built over recent times. In Tasmania, the Premier has established a recovery council to provide them with advice. This Council recently released the list of organisations they’d been consulting with. Nearly 90 organisations - mostly representing business - were there but not one union to provide t...he voice and ideas of workers. It’s hard to see how Tassie is going to build back better after COVID if this is the approach. https://www.theage.com.au//business-and-unions-to-power-st
22.01.2022 Has the Government forgotten the Banking Royal Commission? The Morrison Government signals a roll back of the responsible lending reforms designed to protect consumers.
20.01.2022 Cuts to JobKeeper start today with 3.5 million workers to be worse off under the changes. It’s a terrible move by the Morrison Government at a time when so many still need significant support. Don’t forget that we are currently running a FREE service if you’ve got any COVID related workplace questions. Phone us on (03) 6216 7616, email us at [email protected] or DM us here.... http://www.abc.net.au//jobkeeper-coronavirus-ato-/12689068

19.01.2022 Flashback Friday! A week ago, we gathered union women from across our movement for our annual conference. It was a brilliant day of conversation and planning around how we can win workplaces that work for women. Can you spot yourself?
19.01.2022 This evening’s good news - Senator Lambie to oppose fee hikes and unfair university funding cuts. "I'll be damned if I'm going to be the vote that tells the country that poor people don't get dream jobs," Senator Lambie said in a statement on Wednesday evening. Well done to our NTEU Tasmanian Division comrades who have been tirelessly campaigning on this issue.... https://www.smh.com.au//budget-to-deliver-326-million-for-
19.01.2022 Today is World Public Service Day and we’re giving a shout out to our many public sector members. Our community and quality of life is underpinned by the delivery of essential, quality public services. We know the vital work you do. From health to education, parks to prisons, defence to social security, and much, much more, thank you!
18.01.2022 New analysis by the McKell Institute blames a suite of Liberal Government policies for suppressing wages. The report cites public sector pay freezes, an increase in visas for temporary migrant workers, inaction on wage theft and the gig economy, and failing to press the Fair Work Commission for bigger minimum wage increases as the ways the Government is pushing our wages down. Make no mistake - the position the Government takes on these issues have a real and direct impact on... your pay packet. https://www.theguardian.com//wage-growth-slowdown-under-co
18.01.2022 Unions Tasmania Secretary, Jessica Munday, attended yesterday’s State Budget lock up. As usual with budgets, there are a lot of big numbers thrown around. But does it really deliver for workers? As a post COVID budget, is it going to set Tasmania up for future prosperity? We think it’s a missed opportunity to deliver the big, bold jobs creating investments we’re going to need.
17.01.2022 We know too many. Join your union, folks.
15.01.2022 Rest in power, RBG.
14.01.2022 Parks and Wildlife workers are critical to our state’s firefighting capacity. They put themselves in harms way to protect the community. Providing them with the equipment to do their job properly should be the bare minimum and a priority for Government leading into summer.
13.01.2022 Our health unions are demanding action in aged care. The system is broken and we know what it takes to fix it. Unions have been calling for solutions for years. The Government must act. To support the campaign, sign here ... https://www.megaphone.org.au//we-demand-action-for-aged-ca
11.01.2022 Much of Tasmania (and Australia) are watching and hoping that as many whales can be saved as possible in this heartbreaking stranding. It is public sector workers from the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water & Environment leading the rescue effort in what would be physically and emotionally demanding work. We wish everyone involved all the best.... http://www.abc.net.au//tasmania-whale-stranding-r/12687740
09.01.2022 This is populist nonsense and terrible policy. We know we will need workers to spend to help our economic recovery. This means that workers will have less to spend. The Government can and should use public sector wages to put pressure on the private sector. This will just act to suppress wage growth for everyone.... You don't heal the economy by hurting workers. https://www.afr.com//scott-morrison-ties-public-service-pa
09.01.2022 We know that income tax cuts are no match for social spending. It also goes without saying that tax cuts are of zero benefit to you if you are out of work. The upcoming budget needs to reflect a national plan for jobs and social spending to support the community, not tax cuts for high income earners.... https://www.abc.net.au//income-tax-cuts-proposal-/12683390
09.01.2022 Striking UWU members at General Mills need your help! Tasmanian members can show their support by joining the online picket and social media action TOMORROW. Join the event (details in the shared post) for instructions on how to participate
08.01.2022 Make nurses and midwives a key part of COVID recovery. Check out this great Talking Point from Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation - ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary, Emily Shepherd, in today’s Mercury (text in comments). https://www.themercury.com.au//74713ca42ae39c39a575bf72f9a
08.01.2022 Solidarity to our CEPU Tasmania comrades at Australia Post
07.01.2022 Earlier this year the Sex Discrimination Commissioner’s ‘Respect@Work’ report found that sexual harassment at work is rife and our current laws are failing to keep workers safe. The report made 55 recommendations. The Morrison Government has failed to act on even one. Today, on this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we are calling on the Morrison Government to immediately act and implement the recommendations.... All workplaces should be free of violence and harassment. Ending gendered violence at work is union business. #EndVAW #EndGBVatWork #16DaysofActivism
06.01.2022 HOW WILL THEY POSSIBLY SURVIVE?
06.01.2022 Are Tasmanian aged care providers ready for a COVID outbreak in Tasmania? Only on paper, says the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation - ANMF Tasmanian Branch, who outlined all time low staffing levels to a parliamentary committee yesterday.
05.01.2022 ** IMPORTANT - SNAP ACTION TODAY ** Can you join this important action in support of fair uni funding at 1pm today?
05.01.2022 Mental health experts are also calling for the retention of JobKeeper and Jobseeker. The Black Dog Institute is calling on the Government to learn from the global financial crisis (GFC) about what help is needed to support Australians through the pandemic. After the GFC, unemployment rose and so too did suicide rates. They spiked by 22 per cent for unemployed men and 12 per cent for unemployed women in Australia.... Keeping JobKeeper and Jobseeker at their current rates doesn’t just make good economic sense - it’s important for our mental health too. https://www.abc.net.au//calls-for-jobkeeper-and-j/12719196
05.01.2022 Patients are dying unnecessarily at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) according to local clinicians who have written an explosive letter to management. The politics around the issue got nasty yesterday with the Government accusing the Opposition of assisting doctors in penning the letter, an allegation strongly denied. But here’s the rub. The issues at the LGH are not new. Our health unions have been raising them for years now. Bed block and access to beds at Launceston ...is the worst in the country. Nurses, doctors and health staff are begging to be heard and to work on solutions. Health workers, union members and the community don’t want our representatives playing politics with the issue. Please, just work on solutions for the health of all Tasmanians. https://www.abc.net.au//claims-patients-dying-unn/12665156
03.01.2022 A bit of Sunday afternoon fun... Badly explain your job/profession. Go!
03.01.2022 The Government doesn’t care about retirement incomes - it cares about retirement politics. Don’t be fooled by their false arguments less super will mean higher wages and a better chance at owning your own home. There is no evidence less super contributions will result in wage rises. None at all. Nor will it address the overcooked housing market. ... Workers need to stick together and fight for a decent retirement future. And that means increasing the superannuation guarantee. https://www.theguardian.com//using-super-to-fix-wages-grow
02.01.2022 Everyone deserves a safe workplace. Treat retail workers with respect.
02.01.2022 MUA, here to stay
01.01.2022 Industry super funds are leading the way, advocating for action on climate change, equality and excessive executive pay. Is this one of the reasons why they get under the Government’s skin? https://www.smh.com.au//super-fund-pushes-asx200-to-cut-em
