21.01.2022 We have developed a flyer that provides a helpful explanation of gendered violence, who it affects and who can help stop gendered violence in the workplace. We ...encourage you to use the flyer and hold site meetings during the 16 Days of Activism to help stop gendered violence in the workplace. All workers have the right to be free from all forms of violence and harassment at home and at work.

21.01.2022 Are some staff roles and positions your workplace strongly gender segregated? Talk to the people you work with about the makeup of your workplace organise to ensure hiring, employment and promoting practices don’t discriminate. We all need to work on breaking down unconscious and at times VERY conscious biases. #16DaysofActivism #SafeRespectedEqual #GenderedViolence

19.01.2022 No shade to our hi-vis sisters, but can you imagine politicians turning up at schools, disability care or social services buildings to talk about jobs? The reality is that our COVID economic recovery is being driven more by a desire for photo ops than by a realistic assessment of our workforce and community need.

19.01.2022 Are you an OHS rep? Section 67 of the OH&S Act 2004 entitles all OHS and Deputy Reps who have completed a 5 day initial training course to attend a one day refresher training course each year and choose the course they wish to attend in consultation with their employer. https://www.ohsrep.org.au/training The GV refresher course covers:... * Consultation, communication and representation * Gendered violence: definitions, impacts and injury * Identifying risks, risk assessment, prevention and the hierarchy of control * Resolving issues Getting elected and trained as an HSR is a powerful way to combat GV at work. Sign up for the training here (for existing HSRs only) https://www.ohsrep.org.au/training

19.01.2022 Disability justice and racial justice are union business, which means ‘touch one, touch all’ includes disabled workers and migrant workers too. https://www.journal.megaphone.org.au//touch-one-touch-all-

19.01.2022 An excellent article looking at the changes in Victoria and WorkSafe Victoria's guide for employers on work-related gendered violence. Recognising sexual harassment and other forms of GV as an OHS hazard is a game changer which was fought and won by union women. https://www.theguardian.com//employers-have-been-put-on-no

07.01.2022 Why does this article only mention mothers?

07.01.2022 Welcome to the We Are Union: Women's Equal Pay Day Panel. This year we are acknowledging Equal Pay Day whilst also enduring a global pandemic that has disproportionately negatively affected women. We know that in Australia, women have lost jobs at higher rates than men have and more women than men have assessed their super funds to see them through this period. ... Today we have a panel to discuss how Covid-19 affects women, how to stop women being left behind, options for creating change as well as a Q&A session where you'll have the opportunity to ask your own questions. Demand better support for women by signing the petition at: www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/working-women and post a selfie of you with one of the fab campaign signs!

07.01.2022 Everyone has unconscious biases. Unexamined, these create obstacles to women, people of colour, and LGBTIQ+ workers. Hiring and promoting diverse staff, including women and LGBTIQ+ people will help prevent unsafe work cultures from developing. #16DaysOfActivism #SafeRespectedEqual

07.01.2022 Sign the Megaphone petition calling upon the Australian Government to ratify the ILO Convention 190! https://www.megaphone.org.au//ratify-ilo-c190-violence-and

06.01.2022 It's day two of #16DaysofActivism and why not highlight some fierce union women from history! In April-May 1941, waitresses at the Alexandra Hotel held the first hotel strike in Victoria. The waitresses did not have a change room, and they were forced to change into their uniforms in a passageway leading to the men’s toilet. The publican refused the union’s request for a separate change room, and the women went on strike. They encouraged patrons to boycott the hotel, and, well, eventually some stink bombs went off in the public bar, clearing everyone out. The publican sat down with union rep Jean Young, and the waitresses got their change room. The moral of this story: women in union can take action to stop gendered violence together.

06.01.2022 This is an appalling omission from the Federal Government and leaves tens of thousands of educators in Victoria facing an uncertain future. Its great that to...day Dan Tehan recognised early educators as the unsung heroes of this pandemic, but these are empty words when he will not guarantee they are paid for the next six weeks. United Workers Union is calling on Minister Tehan to guarantee educators wages by strengthening the employment guarantee provisions in the transitional funding. -United Workers Union ECEC Director Helen Gibbons Read the full United Workers Union statement here: www.unitedworkers.org.au/federal-government-announcement-ha

06.01.2022 Victorias roadmap out of Stage 3 and 4 lockdowns favors men over women. Women have consistently been left behind during this pandemic.

06.01.2022 I didn’t go into a trade because I’m like this tough woman who wants to break boundaries. It was just what I wanted to do for work, says Audrey, a first-year electrical apprentice. Read Audrey's story at the link

05.01.2022 This is unjust. Pandemic planning needs to factor in the impact on workers. There are enough resources to go around and there are solutions to assisting workers during this unprecedented time.

04.01.2022 Women have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Weve shouldered the majority of the job cuts and had to deal with drastically increased caring responsibilities. Working women need pandemic support, and the Morrison Government isnt doing enough. Sign the petition telling Morrison and the National Cabinet to take action at www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/working-women

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) members on the launch of a campaign for a new Reproductive Leave entitlement. "Ms Marshall initiated her campaign after needing fertility treatment to conceive daughters, identical twins Ava and Lucy, following two miscarriages and other complications. "I had no personal leave left, so I went and had the embryo [which later split and became twins] implanted during my lunchbreak and had to go back to work for a m...eeting," said Ms Marshall. https://www.theage.com.au//australia-s-first-claim-for-rep See more

03.01.2022 Part-time workers are overwhelmingly women workers. This will condemn many women to poverty, and at a time when caring responsibilities are higher than usual. Shame.

02.01.2022 This is a really interesting precedent relating to the understanding of family violence as a workplace issue. We recommend you have a listen!
