07.01.2022 Ever wonder why wombat poops are cubed? New research from the University of Tasmania and Georgia Tech set out to crack the secret of the unique cubed poo of wo...mbats. Today, the team behind the cubed crap mystery earned itself a satirical Ig Noble Prize, awarded by Improbable Research, for making people laugh and then think, at a ceremony at Harvard University in the US. One of the researchers, Dr Scott Carver (UTAS) said wombat poop was dry and the cubes formed in their long intestines - which are about 10 metres long; comparatively, the human intestine is only 7 metres long. "(Humans) don't pull as much water from faeces." The fact that the wombat intestine is not uniformly flexible, with some parts rigid while other parts are soft, forms the basis of the current hypothesis about the formation of cubed poo.
