24.01.2022 Behaviour is another form of communication. As an adult, we can help our children learn to find what’s underneath, what’s actually going on. Learning at a young age will help them as they grow to regulate their emotions and know they aren’t ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’.

24.01.2022 Have you experienced any of these?

22.01.2022 I see you taking your kid to therapy while your friends take their kids to football or ballet. I see you sneak out of the conversation when all your friends boast about achievements and exam notes. I see you juggle events and meetings.... I see you sitting on the computer for hours investigating what your child needs. I see you make a bad face when people complain about what looks like nonsense. I see you disappear little by little but you keep going beyond for your family. I see you pull strength from weakness with a force you didn't even dream you had. I see you showing respect for teachers, therapists and medical professionals who help your child and help you. Watching you wake up early in the morning to do it all again after another chaotic night. I see you when you're on the edge of the precipice struggling to live. I know you feel invisible, like no one notices. But I want you to know that I see you. I see you push forward always. I see you choose to do everything you can to give your child the best care at home, school, therapy and the doctors. What you do matters. It's worth the struggle. On those days when you wonder if you can make it one more minute, I want you to know I see you. I want you to know that you are beautiful. I want you to know it's worth it. I want you to know that you are not alone. I want you to know that love is the most important thing, and that you are the best at it. And in those days when you see an improvement, those moments when hard work has its reward, and you can taste success, I'll see you then too. And I'm proud of you. Whatever day today... ...you're doing it right. And I see you. Alethea Mshar John Walker / Flickr

15.01.2022 Here is a poem I wrote in lock down for all you ASD parents. Feel free to share. I SEE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT ME. I see the way you look at me when my child acts so inappropriately. ... You wonder why I don't react and think that parenting skills I lack. Did you ever think there was another reason why you can hear my child so loudly cry. Did you ever think to ask if I was ok and how that could make a really big difference to my day. This world has so much to learn about many different behaviors of concern. You see your look is nothing new to me as I have beautiful children with ASD. So maybe just once, I can look at you and help you to understand what I see and what I do. You see a loud rude child interrupting your day. I see difficulty with volume control and not knowing what and when to say. You see a child screaming and rolling around on the floor. I see anxiety because of change he wasn't expecting before. You see a child looking down and not saying hello, ignoring your requests and being eager to go. I see a child just barley coping and doing his best to just not to say no. You see a child, hitting, yelling, swearing and it makes your blood boil. I see a child trapped in a world of anxiety and dispare, he has no control and he has no key. His only chance for escape is to get the attention of me. Like any escape there are casualties on the way but if I get angry he will never get through the day. Next time you look at me and think you understand, think of these words and instead give a helping hand. This poem is to support every parent just like me, to get them through each day and give them the golden key. One more word and I'll let you be. Just remember I'm not the only one that sees the way you look at me. ;) By Julia Kilner
