18.01.2022 JobKeeper vs JobSeeker The Federal Government recently announced the JobKeeper Payment scheme, which is designed to assist employers (and self-employed individuals) affected by the Coronavirus pandemic to continue to pay their workers. The JobKeeper scheme has been well received and welcomed by all sectors of the economy. In fact, many employers have already contacted employees affected (including those who have been stood down without pay) to inform them that the emplo...yer will register for the JobKeeper scheme and make payments to employees from the first week of May 2020. In some cases, employers have also contacted employees who had recently lost their job and have been receiving the JobSeeker Payment whilst not working. In these situations, where a former employee is re-hired, the JobKeeper Payment could offer the employee a greater fortnightly payment when compared to the JobSeeker Payment, for example, as follows: Under the JobKeeper Payment scheme an eligible employee will receive (through their employer) minimum fortnightly salary income of $1,500. Under the JobSeeker Payment scheme an eligible employee (assuming they are single with no children) would be expected to receive a fortnightly payment of up to $565.70 plus the $550 Coronavirus supplement (resulting in a total fortnightly payment of up to around $1,115). However, JobSeeker recipients may also be eligible for other Government entitlements. See more

18.01.2022 Please be aware of the recent 'ATO' scam. Scammers have been targeting taxpayers, claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions or occasionally, the South Australian Police. The scammers will either call you or leave a message for you to call them back - in relation to a particular tax debt or claiming that you have committed tax fraud. If you receive a phone call and you suspect it may be a scam, hang up and immediately report this to the ATO. Do not send any money or provide them with your personal information.

08.01.2022 #TaxTimeTip - HECS and HECS help and Tax Deductibility If a taxpayer meets the eligibility requirements for a deduction for self-education expenses, the whole tuition fee may be deductible. The student contribution to the cost of providing the training is known as HECS. A student’s contribution (HECS) can be paid in two ways:... pay all of the student contribution amount up-front, The tuition fee is claimable as an expense of self-education in the financial year in which the expense is incurred. receive a HECS-HELP loan for the full student contribution amount, . Because the student is receiving a benefit from the government in the form of subsidised fees they cannot also claim a tax deduction for their own contribution The taxpayer must start repaying their HELP debt when their HELP repayment income reaches the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. The HELP repayment thresholds are adjusted each year to reflect any changes in average weekly earnings. For the 2019 income year the repayment threshold is $51,957. See more

07.01.2022 #TaxTimeTip You will not need to request an amendment if you already lodged tax 2019. The ATO is implementing the necessary system changes so taxpayers that have already lodged their 2018-19 tax return will receive any increase to the low and middle income tax offset they are entitled to. Any tax refund will be deposited in the taxpayers nominated bank account. You will not need to request an amendment. Assessments for returns already lodged are expected to start to issue from Friday 12 July and into the following week, which is in line with the normal processing of refunds for this time of year.

06.01.2022 #TaxTimeTip Travelling or living away from home Therefore, before a taxpayer can claim a deduction for travel expenses they must be able to demonstrate that the expenses are linked to the derivation of assessable income.... Distinguishing between whether a taxpayer is on business travel or living away from home is critically important because a taxpayer is generally not entitled to claim a deduction for the costs associated with living away from home. However, where an employer provides accommodation, food and other incidentals as fringe benefits to such an employee then the employer will generally be entitled to claim a deduction for those costs. In contrast, taxpayers who are able to demonstrate that they are on business travel will be entitled to claim a deduction for the costs associated with such travel.
