17.01.2022 COMMUNITY RECOGNISES TOUGH YEAR FOR CLASS OF 2020 Close to 200 boxes of cookies will be delivered to Year 12 students across the Glenelg Shire community in the coming week as a small gesture to acknowledge the resilience and strength gained from such a challenging year. What would normally be a year of emerging adulthood rituals including celebrating turning 18, obtaining a driver’s licence and celebrating graduation with friends has been impacted by what can only be descri...bed as a one-in-a-lifetime pandemic. United Way Glenelg is working with local cookie business Lejovi in conjunction with Principal of Bayview College Dr Michelle Kearney to create a box of bespoke cookies, each containing an inspirational quote for students to draw strength from, such as Absorb the colour of life, Your path is yours and Oh the places you’ll go. Though most of us can identify with the frustration due to current COVID-19 restrictions, few of us understand what it’s like to be deprived of what should have been some of the most important moments of Year 12, said Nicole Carr Executive Officer United Way Glenelg. While we cannot make it right, we can still celebrate the Class of 2020 and let the students know that as a community we are supporting their incredible efforts. Our community often finds ways to take care of one another in difficult circumstances. We’re seeing that now more than ever, in ways too numerous to list. In the coming weeks, it will be important to continue to support the students as they finalise assignments and exams, concluded Ms Carr. School principals have witnessed incredible examples of perseverance and determination from the students and thrilled to have them recognised by the community. Principal Dr Michelle Kearny said the class of 2020 are resilient people of hope buoyed by the incredible support and encouragement of their dedicated teachers. I am confident that these young people will in turn create a positive change in the community and their chosen fields of endeavour. Meridith Walker, Principal at Casterton Secondary College said the staff have watched, with pride, as their Year 12 students grow from tentative Year 7 students to the confident, resilient, courageous young adults they are today. We congratulate them for the strength that they have shown throughout a very challenging 2020 and wish them all the best in the coming years. United Way Glenelg is also inviting community members to leave a positive message of support for Year 12 students on a pinned post on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/unitedwayglenelg This initiative is funded by United Way Glenelg COVID-19 Impact Fund. 17.01.2022 SINGING PROGRAM EXTENDED TO REDUCE SOCIAL ISOLATION FOR OLDER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY Funding for the Singing Strong program has been extended until the end of the year, enabling residents at Aged Care Facilities to participate in and connect to the community through song. When the pandemic struck, the program was adapted to be Covid-safe with local musician, Jess Cook, moving the delivery of the program from face-to-face at Harbourside Lodge to live-streaming from her lou...nge room. This also provides an opportunity to extend the program to a broader audience with residents from other aged care facilities joining in to hear Jess sing. Songs are selected for their sing-along value, offering a trip down memory lane for many of the residents, who join in by either singing, playing an instrument or merely tapping their toes. United Way Glenelg Executive Officer, Nicole Carr, said it was great to see technology being used to provide people in aged care with a sense of connection to others. With limited social activities on offer for those living in aged care, the risk of social isolation and disengagement is a real concern. The pandemic emphasises the importance of using technology to provide connectedness and enrichment in aged care settings. One family who has greatly appreciated Jess’s singing is Jenny King, her mum, Marge Wilson, was a resident at Harbourside Lodge and recently passed away. You were the highlight of my Mum’s week. You gave her time-out from her dementia problems and she adored you. Every time I hear you sing it brings tears, but they are happy tears as you made such a difference to Mum. Her last few months weren’t good, but singing with you made her so happy. The Singing Strong program is an innovative speech therapy program introduced to Harbourside Lodge residents in 2019, aimed at residents who are living with Parkinson's Disease, post-stroke affectations, mild dementia, or for those who have issues with voice, speech or breathing. Singing Strong, held virtually every Tuesday from 2.00 pm via the Singing Strong Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Singing-Strong-109245644060265

14.01.2022 HOPE PACKAGES GO OUT TO CASTERTON RESIDENTS United Way Glenelg has given 20 HOPE packages to families in Casterton, funded by their COVID-19 Impact Fund. The packages were sent to families needing a helping hand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each family received a base package which included a $40 FoodWorks voucher, essential pantry items, toiletries, fruit and vegetables, simple recipe cards and health resource information. ... The packages received by the Casterton families were also customised to the specific needs of each family, taking into consideration the number of children and age of children in the family. The families were identified through the Casterton Memorial Hospital, with input from the principals and wellbeing teams at Casterton Secondary College, Sacred Heart Primary School, Casterton, Casterton Primary School and the Kathleen Millikan Centre. Paula Layley-Doyle, Community Health Nurse from Casterton Memorial Hospital said the families were chosen to receive the packages for multiple reasons. We included single-parent families, children with autism, single-income families, low socio-economic families and families who were geographically and socially isolated. Multiple community organisations were generous in donating to the packages, including Paint Casterton REaD, Casterton Primary School, Casterton Memorial Hospital and Hands Up Casterton, concluded Ms Layley-Doyle. Many recipients of the HOPE packages have provided feedback, with one recipient, who at the time had a 4-day old baby stated ‘No one has ever been this kind to me. These baby things are just what we needed’. While other recipients phoned the hospital to thank them for the items they received. United Way Glenelg Executive Officer, Nicole Carr, said that working with community organisations was important in understanding the needs of the Casterton community. ‘Partnering with organisations who have a greater understanding of the needs of their community is important in being able to reach those who need to support the most.’ ‘These packages are addressing the invisible problems and consequences of COVID-19,’ Ms Carr said. Assistant Principal of Casterton Secondary College, John Webb, thanked the community organisations involved, as well as United Way. ‘On behalf of Casterton Secondary College and the recipient of the HOPE packages, I would like to thank the Casterton Memorial Hospital, Community Health and United Way for the generosity and kindness in making these packages available.’ This project is supported by the United Way Glenelg COVID-19 IMPACT Fund. 03.01.2022 FACE MASKS MADE AVAILABLE FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITY MEMBERS United Way Glenelg has distributed 4,000 single-use face masks to local health services and not for profits in the Glenelg Shire. Masks have been made available free to vulnerable residents who are at the greatest risk of infection.... Portland District Health Nurse Unit Manager of Palliative Care JoAnna Spurge, who has taken delivery of 1,000 masks said they would be valuable, particularly for palliative care patients and District Nursing Service patients, their carers and families. "It is reassuring that our patients and their immediate caregivers are not compromising their protection and have the luxury of replacing their single-use facemasks regularly." Face masks are still mandated in Victoria and it is anticipated we will be wearing them through to at least the end of the year. If worn correctly and provided hands have been sanitised before placing on the face they can provide an additional barrier to lower the risk of transmission. United Way Glenelg Executive Officer Nicole Carr delivered the masks across the shire last week and they have been well-received. "While the shortage of facemasks has eased in Victoria they are still relatively expensive to buy. Access to free masks can ease the financial burden for vulnerable people." Masks have been made available to the following health services; Winda-Mara Dhauwurd Wurrung Elderly & Community Health Service Inc. Portland District Health Heywood Rural Health Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre The Salvation Army Portland Casterton Memorial Hospital St. Vincent de Paul Casterton and Kyeema Support Services, Portland. Some single-use facemasks have also been made available for free to community members who may require them. They are available by contacting United Way Glenelg on 0410 513 305. This project is supported by the United Way Glenelg COVID-19 Impact Fund with masks provided by B-Colors and advice from Brewster Walsh and Associates Portland. #unitedway #unitedwayglenelg #facemasks
