24.01.2022 There are so many ways Australia can choose to be a good global neighbour during the COVID-19 crisis. Here’s one!

22.01.2022 Today the Uniting Church in Australia joins the School Strike 4 Climate Global Day of Action. We stand with our young leaders and First Nations young people who... are calling for a COVID-19 recovery that is good for the planet and good for us. THANK YOU to everyone who has showed support sharing photos, posting on Church noticeboards and hosting local or online actions. Thanks for the great photos shared to our Working for Justice - Uniting Church in Australia circle and in Uniting Earth NSW/ACT Group. #FundOurFutureNotGas #Uniting4Climate #BuildBackBetter

22.01.2022 Great to see these steps towards developing more genuine partnerships between Pacific and Australian people.

20.01.2022 #InternationalDayOfPeace message from Mereani Nawadra, Ecumenical Enabler for Just and Safe Pacific Communities of Women and Men: What does Peace mean to me as ...a woman? Peace is the awareness of oneness of humanity Peace is living in Harmony without being fearful of who you are Peace is respecting others regardless of one’s religion, your gender, your ability or disability, sexual identity or cultural identity. Peace is when you are confident enough to be the person you want to be. Peace is Gender Equality. Peace is education Peace is freedom from violence and oppression. Peace is being able to walk on the streets of Suva without the fear of being sexually harassed or assaulted. Peace is solving problems through dialogue rather than conflict. Peace is respecting each other’s voices Peace is not something you wish for, its something you make, something you do, something you are and most importantly something you give away. Peace starts within and radiates to the world outside Peace begins with a smile. Peace is understanding. Peace is having a roof over my head See more

19.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and marks the first day of #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Each year from 25 Nov to 10 Dec, individuals, institutions and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls by raising awareness about gender-based violence and challenging discriminatory attitudes. Events like the 16 Days of Activism are crucial because they ...shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place. Everyone in the community, from individuals to institutions, can play a role in changing the norms, practices and structures that lead to, or excuse, gender-based violence. Actions can be as simple as: Educating yourself about the causes and consequences of gender-based violence Making a personal commitment to not condone or accept violence, and to speak up Having conversations with family and friends about the negative impact of violence on individuals and communities Leading a Bible study on gender equality with your family or small group (https://www.unitingworld.org.au/gendertheology/) Using your social media to speak up, let your community know you are there for support, share resources and information; including about available support services in your country. Earlier this year, we worked together with women’s fellowships from our partner churches across the Pacific to develop a series of posters out of messages shared by the Pacific Conference of Churches and United Church in the Solomon Islands. They have also been made into tiles for use on social media (see below), so we’ll be sharing these, as well as what our partners are doing to mark the 16 Days in their communities. Together we can create a world without gender-based violence. #16DaysOfActivism #IDEVAW #16Days

17.01.2022 The uniqueness, equality and dignity of each and every family member is given by God and cannot and must not be taken away by any person, culture, teaching, doctrine, power, theology or religion. Rev Dr Cliff Bird and Siera Bird, United Church in the Solomon Islands. _____________________________... We worked with women’s fellowship groups to create this series of posters based on statements made by Pacific theologians and the Pacific Conference of Churches. They have been used by churches during lockdowns, when women and families were at greater risk of isolation and violence. #16Days #IDEVAW

16.01.2022 It's National Child Protection Week and the theme this year is #PuttingChildrenFirst! It's an important reminder that the safety and wellbeing of children is a first priority and it's everyone's responsibility; at home, at school, at church, in aid and development... Every child, everywhere.... (See the captions for more info on the posters below.

15.01.2022 These stories - of people trying to survive in South Sudan as the price of food sky rockets - are really moving. Please take a moment to read and pray for our partners, the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan, as they do everything they can to help. If you want to lend your support, please visit https://bit.ly/2QIFogI

15.01.2022 On #InternationalDayofPeace, here's some ideas about how to create change. Add your messages of solidarity and encouragement in the comments below for us to pass on to our amazing peace building partners!

13.01.2022 700,000 people are facing starvation in South Sudan. It’s huge, but each of us can help. Read more and donate now: www.unitingworld.org.au/south-sudan-crisis/

12.01.2022 Women of the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu (PCV) led the production of this powerful video featuring church leaders publicly denouncing violence against women, girls and children. The clip aired on national TV in Vanuatu during the COVID-19 lockdowns and has been replayed this week for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (25 Nov to 10 Dec 2020). It’s great to see so many leaders spreading this important message! UnitingWorld works in partnership with PCV and this project is supported by the Australian Government through the ‘Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development’ initiative. #16Days #EndViolenceAgainstWomen

11.01.2022 URGENT PRAYER REQUEST We’ve just been in touch with our partners from the Methodist Church of Zimbabwe and heard the very sad news that four of their ministers have died from COVID-19 in the last couple of weeks. Zimbabwe has been experiencing a second COVID wave, with more cases in January than all of 2020 combined. Gathering for worship is currently suspended, which means congregations are unable to raise money to carry out their caring missions or pay their staff, who ha...ve no other source of income. We’re using your gifts to respond immediately to these threats providing small daily allowances so people can meet their basic needs; supplying personal protective equipment so leaders can continue to serve those in poverty; helping ensure clean running water in our partner’s office so that leadership can stay safe to serve others. THANK YOU for giving us the resources to stand beside them. Please pray: For the leadership of the Church in Zimbabwe, especially for those who have lost family members. For the people of Zimbabwe, who were already facing an economic crisis, and now have lost income For Zimbabwe’s leadership as they struggle to combat new lethal variants of COVID-19 and source vaccinations Even a small gift can help relieve some of this stress. If you can, please make a donation today through our Lent Event website.

09.01.2022 We’re excited about this event!

08.01.2022 On International Day of Peace, we want to show our partners in South Sudan and Ambon we're with them! Leave your message of encouragement or your prayer in the comments - we know they'll love hearing from you #PeaceDay

07.01.2022 The sound of community

06.01.2022 In the midst of such potential for added suffering in our homes and communities [due to COVID-19], we are reminded of Jesus’ new commandment, given to his disciples. Rev James Bhagwan, General Secretary, Pacific Conference of Churches. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (John 13:34-35)... Challenges present new opportunities to demonstrate the love of God.Rev Dr Cliff Bird, United Church in the Solomon Islands. #16Days #16daysofactivism

05.01.2022 Happy International Day of Peace! These students in Maluku, Indonesia, are celebrating the peace workshops our partner in Ambon runs, promoting harmony between Muslims and Christians

04.01.2022 These new appointments to the Pacific Conference of Churches on gender equality and youth engagement are great news for our region! We've been blessed to work with and learn from Siera and Mereani as leaders implementing the Gender Equality Theology Institutional Transformation (GET-IT) project within their respective churches in the Solomon Islands and Fiji. These leaders will now be using their expertise to support more than 30 churches (!) across the Pacific to advance ...gender equality, end violence against women and children, and empower the next generation of leaders. We're looking forward to seeing the fruits of this growing movement of women leaders in the Pacific

03.01.2022 We're always so happy to be able to pass on the successes we're seeing in the communities you're supporting. These pics are part of the COVID-19 response you helped fund through our ACT NOW ON COVID-19 appeal in July. Our partners have: Reached 10,804 people through COVID-19 hygiene awareness and WASH infrastructure in six schools and fifteen settlements... Installed 44 water tanks and 44 hand basins in settlements Installed 18 handwash facilities. Rev. Roney Towamina from East Tawala says they’re grateful that their community was one of the first pilot Water and Sanitation projects. Sponsored by UnitingWorld they were also able to implement the ‘Rait Mama’ Campaign, which trains advocates to teach good hygiene in their villages. When the Provincial health department in Alotau were advising local communities to help prevent COVID-19 through handwashing with soap, we felt like we were one step ahead of some of the nearby communities, Rev Roney says. We felt pride and joy because hand washing has become our normal habit through the Rait Mama Campaign.

03.01.2022 SO HAPPY to see case numbers steadily dropping in Victoria - great job VIC friends! Internationally, where clean water and soap is hard to find, our partners are still working incredibly hard to make sure people are safe. Read more at https://bit.ly/2QIFogI

03.01.2022 COVID-19 threatens millions of people with a return to extreme poverty. Some of them are familiar faces in places where you've worked hard to reduce suffering for many years. Can you help stop the slide?

01.01.2022 A great conversation last night with our partner staff, teachers and students in Sri Lanka, DEAFLINK. We loved being able to see inside the classroom and talk directly to a student, and it was great to have more than 40 of you join us live for the Zoom! If you’re still hoping to make a donation that goes up to six times as far visit us here at www.unitingworld.org.au/joinhands. The Australian Government makes grants available to us for work like this with our partners, but we need to co-invest. We’ve committed to contribute $1 for every $5 of what the Government makes available to us. Your contribution means we can match the government funding successfully, gain access to the full amount on offer to and change more lives not just in Sri Lanka, but across the Pacific, Asia and Africa. THANK YOU!
