19.01.2022 Heres a new song by Sydney band Magus recorded earlier this year here at Unity Gain Studios in Erskineville Sydney. Its a cool track and the drums sound awesome just with the natural ambiance of our variable acoustic live room, where weve recorded rock and jazz bands, choirs and orchestral sections. We also have the best available valve and class A mics, pre-amps and effects, plus Apogee Symphony converters, so it sounds as sweet as.... If youre planning to record over summer, we still have a few weeks available at the studio, so please book now. https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/magnus http://www.unitygainstudios.com/studio_a.html

15.01.2022 Unity Gain Studios - equipment rack from the top: Apogee Symphony audio interface with 24-bit/192k converters. Manley Vari-Mu valve limiter/compressor, based on the old Fairchild that The Beatles used at Abbey Road, and by most mastering studios around the world. Its great for recording because the compression ratio varies automatically depending on how loud the signal is above the threshold, up to 20:1; its like pouring honey on your mix.... TC Electronic Fireworx - two more channels of digital conversion with a bunch of useful effects, like vocoder, ring modulator and chaos generator. The Manley Massive Passive valve equalizer is also used in most mastering studios because it sounds so sweet and rich in every frequency; and when you add 2db of 14k with a broad curve, my Neumann M147 sounds like a U47. 2 x Manley Voxbox these are deep, rich, warm sounding valve pre-amps/compressors/equalizers/limiters, great for bass, room mics, backing vocals and soft keys. The compressor is based on the old LA-2A and the eq is like an old Pultec. Amek 9098 pre-amps designed by Rupert Neve. This is what a million dollar Neve desk sounds like. 8 x Peach Savannah valve pre-amps, theyre fast and natural with solid lows and magically clear ultra high frequencies designed by my mate Dave Peach at Peach Electronics.

05.01.2022 START AGAIN EP review by Brecon Charles Walsh Photo by Tania Smith Morning Light for starters... John Priors new rock quartet collaboration is cooking on all four hot-fired cylinders. Word up crew, from XYZ to ABC, this super-sparky hard rock Australian rock combo have been playing along the east coast of Australia with the illustrious and well attended Oz Rock Roadshow tours in recent times with all-star to great acclaim. John Prior is the virtuoso drummer from the much loved Matt Finish and a major studio master whose Unity Gain Studios have seen wondrous CD releases and production from his Mammal Music label since his foray into multi-disciplinary production expertise. He has also been pivotal in his advocacy and expertise in marshaling key players to lobby for musicians rights for fair payment and re-configuring the entire live gig scene in Australia. His recordings are legendary from Matt Finish, his work with the matchless guitar virtuoso, Adrian Belew (King King Crimson, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa) and as the drummer for Mick Taylor from The Rolling Stones on his first solo tour through Australia. Then his dynamic re-formatted presentations of Matt Finish after Matt Moffitts death in late 2003 including a quite brilliant CD on their 30th anniversary, entitled Matt Finish 1978-2008 with David Hugh Adams fronting this outfit with the amazing virtuoso bassist Harry Brus and guest guitar legend Kevin Borich on selected dates. So The Final Word is a bold and full-tilt four piece new rock band with "Start Again" as their debut four-track EP. The record features Ric Herbert on vocals, Dai Pritchard on guitar, Justin Bianchi on bass and John Prior on drums and production. Lead singer Ric Herbert embodies a really kinesthetic expressivity and intensity in his taut stage moves within that great and glorious Oz rock tradition of the rock bands that have made it our unique genre over decades of commitment by performers and audiences alike who attend shows and collect the outstanding catalogue of many fabulous Oz rock bands we all revere and enjoy immensely. The Final Word have just begun to start again with their word up from ABC to XYZ. It is great to see The Final Word turbo-charging the live scene with their super-sparky, pared down new rock style; with tales from the road and beyond the pedestrian. These guys mean business again, and you can download their "Start Again" EP from their website. http://www.thefinalwordband.com As that old adage says, only quality counts and these proceedings have just begun to Start Again! Review - Brecon C Walsh
