25.01.2022 A bit late getting this posted, but on Thursday morning about half of our Year 7s completed a field study in Lawson. It was cold and windy, but students were able to collect some information for their livability reports. On Monday afternoon, Mr Leins and Mr Govan will be taking their classes on the same walk.

25.01.2022 Cakes made by the Hospitality class today. Staff were busy at lunch time judging these amazing creations.

24.01.2022 Done! And another big thank you to Mr Major and Rob who worked to get the wings hanging.

24.01.2022 With the weather warming up, we have noticed a lot of students coming to first aid asking for water. We ask that Parents/Carers please provide a water bottle as the bubblers are still closed due to covid restrictions.

24.01.2022 Our Year 9 PC teachers certainly know how to keep a KARE card draw fun and exciting, and still make sure the draw is random! Congratulations Year 9, thank you for so consistently displaying our school values. Happy last day of term 3 :)

23.01.2022 We've made it to the last day of the Rations Challenge! Mr Gilding is craving coffee, Ms Lovell an apple, and Mrs Emerson some milk in her tea! But the efforts of our students and teachers have led to our team of 25 raising almost $7000! Thank you so much to all the families and friends who have supported us in this endeavour. It's tough, and you very quickly appreciate how fortunate we are. If you'd like to make a donation, the link is below. You can donate to our team, or to an individual student by searching for their name in our team list. Thank you again for your generosity.

22.01.2022 The John McGrath Auto Group and are running an information session for students interested in finding out about Automotive Technician apprenticeship opportunities. They will also be looking for ASBA Technician candidates for the new year. They have conducted these sessions annually over the past 5 years with great success for our recruitment program. This year will be slightly different, due to COVID-19 requirements. It will be compulsory to contact us to book a seat this year as we will be limited with the number of attendees we can accept. With this in mind we will be running two sessions on the night, one at 5.45pm and the second at 6.45pm. Each session will run for 45 minutes. If you know a student who is interested in attending please see Major for more info or read the attached and book an appointment!.

19.01.2022 Students at University of Canberra High School Kaleen have raised more than $7,000 in an incredible fundraising feat by taking part in the Rations Challenge. T...he challenge sees participants eat a restrictive diet for five days, similar to the diet of someone living in a Syrian Refugee camp. It was an eye-opening experience for all those involved. We spoke to the students to find out more. Read the full story here: http://ow.ly/fN2o50BX6rV

19.01.2022 A great opportunity for our AATSI students as they head off to college next year.... if you would like more information please see Mr Major.

18.01.2022 Wear It Purple Day--which we’re celebrating this Friday, 28 August, 2020--is a day to celebrate and empower LGBTQIA+ young people. It is a day to show support; as well as celebrate and promote the values of diversity and inclusion. It is an unjust reality that LGBTQIA+ people experience discrimination and violence that result in an increased risk of poor health and wellbeing outcomes. The rates of attempted suicide within the LGBTQIA+ community are significantly higher than t...he general population. The ‘Writing Themselves In’ Report, the third national study on the health and wellbeing of same sex attracted and gender questioning young people found that: 61% of young people reported verbal abuse because of homophobia. 18% of young people reported physical abuse because of homophobia. School was the most likely place of abuse 80% of those who were abused. 69% reported other forms of homophobia including exclusion and rumours. Young men and gender queer young people reported more abuse than young women. By acknowledging and celebrating days of cultural significance like International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and Wear it Purple Day--in addition to our everyday practices--we are showing students, families, and the wider community that we live our values of inclusion and equity. Inclusion matters for LGBTQIA+ people and non-LGBTQIA+ people alike and recognising Wear It Purple Day is important for all schools. As such, we’re encouraging the UCHSK community to join us in recognising this important daythis Friday (Week 6)through participating in the following: 1. Come dressed in mufti (uniform-free): a. Wear purple (or ‘rainbow’ colours) b. Keep it appropriateNo Boobs, Butts, Bellies, or Biceps and avoid inappropriate logos or slogans c. Bring a gold coin donation (if you can) 2. Find someone from Rainbow Connection to receive a ‘Wear it Purple’ sticker and wristband We’re looking forward to seeing the halls awash in a sea of purple (and rainbows) in celebration of inclusion, equity, and supporting our fellow human beings. Thank you.

16.01.2022 An overdue post about our Remembrance Day commemoration. This year our school captains delivered a service through the sound system for students. Charlotte made an acknowledgement of country, and Jarell played the Last Post on the clarinet. At the front of the school, Mr Carey-Ide led students, including navy cadet Lochlain, in laying a wreath he had made. After the observance of silence, the flags were raised to full-mast. Lochlain has made a significant contribution to our Remembrance Day commemorations in 2019 and 2020, and we wish him well in the future.

15.01.2022 Formals and graduation ceremonies are part of the fabric of school life and like all things in 2020, they are going to look a little different. Read more about end of year events here: http://ow.ly/OwQB50BhLlJ

15.01.2022 Starehe café news. Students undertaking VET Hospitality experienced café preparation and service this week. Students worked collaboratively to plan and organise the menu, service, determined roles and responsibilities leading up to the service. Classroom activities included recipe costing, project and time management using workflows, plating techniques and customer service. Students showed amazing leadership, team work and dedication to the project throughout the experience.... The menu included club sandwiches, chilli chicken sandwiches served with hot chips. Espresso coffee and milkshakes were also served. There was a high turnover of staff as sit-ins and takeaway customers, supporting the students as always in these types of events. A big thank you to the staff for the supporting the L-platers. A big thank you to Dayna for the support with café planning and her ongoing amazing work with the students. Students are looking forward to the next café in term 4 with fresh fruit and vegetables.. Hmmm I wonder what seasonal menu will be on the plate. See more

11.01.2022 Dear Parents / Carers & Students, As you may well have heard through your child, this week (Week 7) is Health & PE Week. We are going to celebrate this as a school on the Wednesday (2nd September). This will involve a number of activities throughout the day, with the aim to be getting our Kaleen school community moving and interacting with each other. Due to covid-19, we were unable to run our Athletics Carnival in the usual way this year, so the HPE Day gives us an opportuni...ty to have a great day and demonstrate our Kaleen spirit. We thank you in advance for your support. Students will stay with their PC / Year Group, and as such, covid19 protocols will still be in place. In essence, students will attend PC as normal at 8.55am, and then we will start the day with a Whole School Walk (broken into Year Groups), and then rotate the Year Groups through 4 activities (45 min sessions): Indigenous Games (Kaleen Oval) Football (soccer) run by our staff and led by Eric and Danny from Star Sports Academy (Kaleen Oval) Yoga / Zumba (Gym) House Relays (Kaleen Oval). Recess will be at 11.30am and from 1.30pm onwards students will have lunch and spend the remainder of the day connecting with each other and staff via 3 activities: Teachers vs Students Touch Football (Kaleen Oval) Social game of Frisbee (Kaleen Oval) Safe & Active (Basketball and Handball courts). The IMP Band will be playing during lunchtime, and there will be a fundraising BBQ sausage sizzle and drinks for sale to support the Year 10 Formal. Students are able to wear the colours / shirts of their favourite sporting team on Wednesday, providing that what they wear follows normal school expectations about appropriateness for school. So, please encourage your child to dust off their runners and activewear and be ready to have a great day! The teachers have been training for months in preparation for the Students v Teachers Touch match, so that students also receive a lesson outside of the classroom !! :) Kind Regards, University of Canberra High School Kaleen
