23.01.2022 1. Use topic sentences. I.e Sentences that introduce the subject of the paragraph or the argument to be made in the paragraph. Topic sentences will not only help organise your ideas, from a marker’s point of view, they will make your work much easier to read. 2. Markers aren’t interested in what Freud states. They are interested in what you think about what Freud states. Presenting your own informed opinion is an important part of doing well at university. Learn to evaluate s...ources and demonstrate critical thinking in your assignments. There are many ways of doing this. One example is the use of reporting verbs to present your own informed opinion about the references you are using. (Example: if you agree with what the author is saying, use positive reporting verbs such as ‘highlights’ or ‘demonstrates’. If you disagree, use ‘believes’, ‘claims’, or ‘assumes’. NB: Some students have print outs of reporting verbs that they keep nearby to use when writing their essays. 3. Trust your instincts. If you ‘feel’ something with your writing is off, chances are, it probably is! 4. Always do a thorough proofread before you submit. This will allow you to put your best foot forward and give your marker less to critique you on. TIP: Try sending the document to your phone and reading from that. Or use the ‘read aloud’ function in word. Both methods will help you spot typos, problems with expression, and other inconsistencies. Alternatively, try changing the font in the document. Though we suggest the other two methods as the better options. 5. Structure is key. Learn how to structure your essay using logic and reasoning. A good general tip for structuring your essay is to try avoiding surprises. For example, the reader should not be surprised when they move from one point to the next. Transitions between paragraphs should be smooth and logical. #studytips #studyskills #universityskills #academicskills #essaywriting #essayhelp #essaytips
