23.01.2022 STRETCHING There are so many different muscles and ways of stretching them, that it can be difficult to determine the best method-some that include bodyweight, bars, racks, bands... and so many different reasons to use these methods. Here I’ve listed some of my go-to stretches and the better way to perform them to get maximum benefit. While a lot of stretches are stock standard, remember that there is a lot of benefit to adding rotation into your stretches, as this inc...reases the length of the muscles and the distance they are therefore being stretched. LATS/BACK: Try increasing the depth of your body and then rotate through your thoracic (mid-back), then allow your shoulder to relax forwards for the ultimate stretch. Don’t forget to do both sides. QUADS: Quads are one of those stretches that everyone does, but do they get much benefit out of it? I queue my clients to push their shoulders back, hip forward and knees close together but I am one of those people that feels very little benefit from the original position. Try the second variation with a rotation through the hips and thoracic for a deeper stretch, as well as a deep lean forward. NECK: Often a stretch that is forgotten but very important, especially if you sit at a desk a lot or suffer from headaches. The first variation is standard-head to side and while this is fine, the second variation adds rotation and a better stretch through the neck by aiming eyesight at your opposite hip and then raising your arm overhead. PECS/CHEST: this is a goooood one and one of my personal favourites. If you weightlift a lot like I do, you may find your pecs are often tight. This will eventually relate into issues with the shoulder muscles if it’s not treated frequently. The first stretch is a simple lean forward on the rack with your arm at a 90 degree angle, whilst the second variation is a better one-it adds as much rotation through the hips and thoracic as you can manage well as through the neck(looking away), to add the biggest stretch your body can manage in this position. In addition to this, I lean my bodyweight into the rack as much as I can during rotation, like I’m trying to push the rack away from me. It’s the best burn! TIP: Remember to hold each stretch for approximately 30-60 secs each whilst focusing on nice deep and relaxed breathing. 21.01.2022 MOBILITY is super important when it comes to fitness. It can sometimes be the be all and end all when it comes to progression and lifting heavy. If you don’t have mobility in your joints, lifting and training may be a lot more difficult than it could be. Give some of these stretches a go each day and see if they improve your output. 14.01.2022 TRAINING & PREGNANCY Whilst there are a lot of people who believe that training through pregnancy can be dangerous and should be avoided, if you’re following a suitable program and ensuring your form is correct and you’re listening to your body, then training is actually very beneficial for your baby and for you both physically and mentally! An important area to think about, is selecting a trainer that is certified in pregnancy training and who understands and supports th...e limitations, changes and your changing needs during training, especially when it comes to pelvic floor and core engagement, which are super important for all ladies pre, during and post pregnancy. Every day during pregnancy your body and mind can feel very different-your energy levels can fluctuate dramatically day to day and it’s important to listen to your body and understand that some days you may be able to lift weights (within reason, depending on your pre-pregnancy exercise routine) and some days it’s better to opt for lighter weights or bodyweight movements instead. Your trainer should be educated in understanding your individual needs during this very exciting but challenging time. They should take into consideration that your balance will be altering on a regular basis as the baby grows, your strength may come and go, your energy levels will depend on the day, you may not have slept well, you may have aches and pains and need to avoid certain movements, you may be emotional during sessions and not understand why. There can be many areas that a lot of trainers, uneducated in pregnancy training, will be unaware of. And that’s when training can be dangerous. Ensure that you choose a trainer who is not only accredited in pregnancy training, but who is conscious that these are big changes to who you are as an individual and can be emotionally and physically challenging for a lot of ladies. It’s not your normal state of being and therefore you need a trainer who can adapt on a sessional basis to your needs. Who will adapt and understand that you need a longer rest today in between sets, or that this week your hips are aching and you can’t squat. With the right training, there is absolutely nothing wrong with continuing your exercise routine and maintaining overall strength-this will only benefit your baby and your pregnancy and how your body adapts to the changes it brings, as well as ensuring the safest and strongest labour you are able to have, as well as the quickest recovery possible regardless of how your baby is brought into this world. 06.01.2022 If you’re looking for an exercise challenge or perhaps a new warmup exercise, give this variation of inchworms a crack. Begin in a squat position and use your elbows to push knees outwards to stretch out your hip flexors. From here, stand upright with your legs as straight as possible (everyone’s ROM will be different) so that you’re giving your hamstrings a good stretch as well. Slowly and using control, walk your hands out (with your core muscles switched on and rock ha...rd) into a plank position. This is where variations can come Into play to make this movement easier/harder depending on your fitness level. You can drop to your knees to perform the pushup portion; or Hold a plank either on your knees or toes; or You can do as I do in my warmups as shown here and perform your pushup and lower your chest as close to the ground as possible. From here, hold this position and keep your muscles under tension for a few seconds without allowing any part of your body to rest on the ground. By doing so, your core, shoulder, chest and arm muscles are all working harder to maintain time under tension without breaking form. For a warmup, try performing around 10 reps and for a challenge, try incorporating this movement into your workouts as an exercise of their own. 05.01.2022 FAMILY DINNERS can be seriously stressful with young kids. They like something one week, the next they hate it. They like an ingredient but it’s touching something else so they can’t eat it. You cut the ingredients into the wrong shape, so they obviously can’t eat it One eats egg but the other won’t. One eats mushroom but the other won’t. And obviously tomato sauce accompanies everything! So, I keep our family dinners fairly simple. I just load our meals with plenty of ...veggies and if they won’t eat them together, I place them separately when I can. You do what you have to do for as long as you need to. Tonight I made a sliced rare beef salad with spinach, mushroom, egg, capsicum, carrot and cucumber. Minus the balsamic vinegar for the fussy eaters at the table and plain grilled steak for them instead of beef (because it’s pink-so they can’t eat that either ). If they’re hard to please just keep it really basic and add to it later on for yourselves. And most importantly, as I’ve learned since becoming a mum, don’t beat yourself up-they’re kids and sometimes they’re willing to cooperate but usually they’re not. It’s not you, it’s THEM See more
