25.01.2022 When you grow up in the bush and are raised on a farm, it’s like you automatically have to be born with an instinct to find solutions to tough problems! At the wise old age of 10 years old, I felt an incredible injustice to a complex problem when our family friends had to move away from their home town of Trangie in search of health services and support for their little one born with a serious medical condition. She was also deaf and couldn’t talk. It just didn’t seem right... to me that they had to leave their home just to get the help they needed! So, the solution finder in me said to mum when I grow up, I’m going to help kids in the bush to talk! Which is literally what I did!! I began my career as a paediatric speech pathologist in the primary health care space in Dubbo. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and it’s in this space that I learnt the paramount importance of supporting kids holistically and that raising children absolutely starts with making them feel heard, seen and valued. In my early work I could see a huge number of kids in our community falling through the cracks. The kids that, by no fault of their own, were caught in the crossfire of some incredibly hardcore social issues like violence, drug abuse, and trauma. Many of these kids were having an incredibly hard time and to me that’s just not good enough. I knew they were good kidsthey just didn’t know how to be good. So with a desire to be part of the solution and fill a massive gap in Dubbo’s social fabric, our sacred community work commenced; ultimately doing whatever it takes to help kids doing it tough live their best life. There are times where I have literally felt like I’m holding the heart of a child in my hands as they so generously tell me the hardest, most soul ripping stuff. When you hear kids say if it wasn’t for you I’d be dead you know that chipping away at the things that matter are solutions. Every day I am grateful for my work and our community. I will always open my mum arms and my mum heart wide for these kids and their families, because it just feels like the right thing to do. 22.01.2022 Angus my friend seemed to have everything 3 beautiful children, a lovely wife, a good job. He seemed to be ticking all the boxes in life he was the president of the local surf club, always giving back and he was the person I went to if I had any personal issues or anything to discuss. I’d always go to him and he always had the answers. When he took his own life, it completely rocked my world. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a communicator, but I didn’t talk about it to any...one for nearly 9 years. It was only when his wife started fundraising for Lifeline that I felt this was an opportunity to start talking to her about what happened to Angus. Off the back of those conversations, the Man Up program was developed a TV series aiming to get to the bottom of the male suicide crisis and hopefully save some Aussie lives by challenging masculinity. I wanted to understand why we lose so many people to suicide we lose 6 beautiful Aussie blokes and 2 beautiful Aussie women to suicide every single day. These numbers are just horrific and so sad and we need to do something about it. So I decided to set up Gotcha4Life to run programs that support mental fitness, to have those difficult conversations and to take away those old-school rules of what it means to be a man or a woman. Things like burying your emotions, not talking openly or with vulnerability for a fear of being seen ‘unmanly’. We know now that the manliest thing you can do is to be open, honest and vulnerable. My life’s goal is to get suicide rates down to zero. It’s a very tough task I know but I think even one suicide is too many. We’ll only do it by us all talking the same language that it’s okay not to be okay. At Gotcha4Life, we believe in prevention through connection and are on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of identifying a close friend in your life, someone you can speak openly and honestly to when times are tough. If you are telling someone about your problems, you’re more likely to fix them. Please don’t worry alone. 19.01.2022 Tomorrow on World Homeless Day, help young Australians without a home by donating to Whitelion. Thanks to their generous matchers, all donations up to $250K will be doubled tomorrow! Whitelion is one of UnLtd's charity partners that specialises in the rehabilition of at-risk youth, many of whom have no place to call home, often through no fault of their own. The first critical step in their process is establishing a fixed address. A simple, everyday aspect that we don’t often think about, but a fixed address is the gateway to even the most basic services, like Centrelink benefits, Medicare and finding employment, which helps transform their lives. Donate now and watch your money double at: https://www.mycause.com.au/events/nohomeaddress

13.01.2022 "School didn’t work for me when I was a kid. What I did get good at was working my way around the system; figuring out where and when to smoke and how to sign my mother’s signature better than her. And I think that’s the experience of a lot of kids out there who just don’t fit in the system. There’s gold in them, but it’s a square peg, round hole scenario and when they can’t learn in this prescribed way, they feel like they’re the problem. BackTrack came about from just think...ing that even when you’re up against the odds like that, there’s always another way. There was never a grand plan to get into youth work, no roadmap for me to get where I am today. It's been one big exercise in just doing things differently to how they’ve been done before for the kids who need it. It often strikes me that these things aren’t revolutionary, but they work because we focus on the fundamentals any human needs to live a happy, healthy life. Belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. We all need to feel like we’re connected to something. Like we can master new things, own our own shit and have a say in what our lives look like. We all need to feel like we have something that’s worth sharing with other people and that we deserve good things to come back to us. Some days, it can feel like you’re up against challenges that are too tough to overcome. And on those days, I’ve gotta get out of my own way and put my boots on and walk out the door anyway. Because I’ve got something to do that is so much bigger than just me. And then there are the magic moments when I get to see what I’ve played a part in pulling together. All these bloody amazing people working towards a common cause - keeping kids alive, out of jail and chasing their hopes and dreams. That’s when I know I’m doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. A single day like that can give me 12 months of fuel. And I need it because it’s a long-term game we’re playing here. 01.01.2022 Margo, that place we imagined togetheryou have to make it real for all the kids who hurt. And with those words an 8-year old boy took his final breaths and I was left with a dream to convert into reality. These are some of the many whispered words I have heard over my career, words that equally haunt and inspire me. Whether the words came from dying children, adolescents racked with anxiety, distraught parents helpless in the face of their child’s harm or adults on the ve...Continue reading
