14.01.2022 Stanley's remaining half-buried, timber-built apple cellars were described in Australia's National Estate Register in 1991 as rare. On what was the McAlpin family's orchard a few kilometres south of this North East Victorian village, two cellars were built side by side into a hill - one in 1932 and the other in 1935 - to store annual apple production. Apples were crated and stacked into the cellars, which, without electricity, were ventilated to keep the fruit cool for months... before its sale into the local market in Stanley, Beechworth and Yackandandah. One of these stores remains largely intact, and the family's descendants plan to preserve one of this apple heritage asset. 14.01.2022 Retired orchardist Giff Thompson describes apple packing and shipments from Stanley, in Victoria's North East, to Sydney in the 1960s. Join me at https://unpeeled.press on my exploration of this Australian horticultural district's rich apple history for the book I'm writing about this important, ubiquitous fruit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_pzPXNPAqg #apples #appleheritage #explorebeechworth #farmgate #northeastvictoria #explorestanley

10.01.2022 Snowline Fruits' Henry Hilton is the last full-time, career apple orchardist in Stanley in Victoria's North East. He grew up in Kent - the heart of England's horticulture - and is regarded by many as one of the best apple growers in Australia. Henry talked with me about which apples grow best, how to grow them, his use of the latest production techniques, and the value of a farmgate shop. 02.01.2022 Beechworth's Rob Tully is a fifth-generation fruit grower. Before he moved here as a boy with his family, the Tullys were orchardists in Doncaster on land that’s now deep in Melbourne's suburbia. Rob has seen the fruit industry change across almost 60 years, where produce is grown, how its scale has changed, and the use of technology. He brings thoughtful insight to the story of growing apples and pears, commonplace fruits that most of us simply take for granted. My full interview with Rob at https://unpeeled.press/podcasts/ about the significance of Beechworth's rich horticultural heritage is part of my research for a book I'm writing about apples.
