17.01.2022 This month's book club: No Friend but the Mountains by Behrouz Boochani. Mon 23 Sept, Better Read Than Dead Newtown, 6.30-7.30, free. Event: Unspoken Words Poetry Book Club From translator Omid Tofighian: "What is more horrific: immigration detention centres constructed as anomalies of a liberal democracy, or systematic state torture imagined as something distinct from fascism?... "Behrouz Boochani finished his book, No Friend but the Mountains: Writing From Manus Prison, approximately a month after being forcibly removed from the original Manus Island immigration detention centre. He completed it following the intense 23-day siege of the prison and the horrific experiences associated with the standoff, eviction and transfer of refugees." READ THIS BOOK, whether or not you come to book club. If you get it from Better Read you get 10% off, tell them it's for book club.

05.01.2022 Book club tonight! We're reading The Lost Arabs by Omar Sakr (UQP 2019). 6.30 - 7.30 at Better Read Than Dead, Newtown, free entry & 10% off the title if you tell the bookshop it's for book club. Event details: https://www.facebook.com/events/1055944831252988/ From a review of this stunning book, by John Kinsella: "Omar Sakr’s new volume of poetry The Lost Arabs is a remarkable and essential work. In a disenfranchised and dislocated country of flesh and spirit, Omar Sakr show...s us ways to reclaim, how to hear and maybe hear beyond the ‘barking angels’, the brutality of dispossession and familial disconnection. But he also offers us various routes through to family, to articulations of justice, to the deepest empathies which come out of stress and loss, and into places where we have to recognise and acknowledge the trauma of communities whose intactness is under constant pressure, and often violent assault. He shows alienation as an imposition of power structures, and he speaks from edges where he knows his own fate and all our fates are determined by conflict over other people’s spaces. He writes: ‘Like any land I have been fought over with some claiming to love me/ more than others, some who are of me and some who are invaders, new comers.’" See more

04.01.2022 That's a wrap for our residency with Inner West Council! Jan-July this year we had a studio of 12 artists in Lewisham, with each of us working on creative projects and also putting on public gigs. Studio artists were Ha Jer Eunice Andrada & Nathan Shephard (cuties pictured here), Centaur Lion-Yin, Nick Baldas, Melody Rachel, Wilfred Roach, Melanie Ree, Garry Trinh, Ellen O'Brien, Fabi Ola Barba Rangimarie & Emma Rose. Big thanks to council for having us. The residency had art...ist dinners, scratch sessions, mental health and creativity workshops, hive open sessions, a salon on chronic pain & creativity, and a huge PRIDE 50 event that opened our artist studio to the public and also commemorated the #stonewall uprising. We got some truly special performers / speakers on the day, including Ken Davis (78-er) and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir. Thank you to all who participated in any of the residency happenings! For the rest of the year, Unspoken Words Storytelling is resting and enjoying gigs made by our fab peers, as well as still hosting our monthly free Unspoken Words Poetry Book Club. Seeya around!
