23.01.2022 The beauty of #Boandik country and the #limestonecoast is that it’s ever changing. The seasons don’t follow the western idea of seasons. Every time I taste honey from this local flora I’m reminded, again, of the uniqueness of this ecosystem. #warrehoney #rawhoney #wildhoney... #unspunhoney #coastalhoney See more
23.01.2022 Shocking weather on the Limestone coast! While the rest of the country is in a heatwave-drought-wind storm, we’re still stuck in early spring weather: cold wet nights and drizzly windy days in the teens. People keep asking me how the bees like this weather, and the short answer is that they don’t!
21.01.2022 Always nice to walk into an apiary and find capped #honeycomb and flowers in bloom. I’ll be #crushing out more #warre #honey this weekend so if your local shelf if bare, have no fear, the honey is near. Not all my apiaries are faring so well of course, and I’ve lost a fair number of hives to the terrible #heatwaves Australia has suffered this past summer - it will impact my overall productivity for at least a season. And since so many native creatures have been using my bees water sources too, I’m making those water sources larger, and planting native trees for shade and nectar to increase the overall ecosystem resilience. #limestonecoast #food #rawfood #rawhoney #purehoney #australianfires #unspunhoney
20.01.2022 Nice bit of spring #honey coming into the #warre #hives! #limestonecoast #rawhoney #australianhoney #slowfood
19.01.2022 If you’re in Adelaide and looking for my honey (which is rapidly running out, I know) swing by the House of Health in the central market. Word is they still have a bit in stock! #rawhoney #warrehoney #warre #limestonecoast... #crushedcombhoney See more
18.01.2022 One of our #bees taking off of a Bursaria spinosa #flower - one of my all time favourite honeys! This plant is also an important local #nectar source for the #native bees and butterflies, so even though I love the honey I limit the number of hives I put near it so that the other #pollinators aren’t left out. I should have some of this special #honey in stores in a couple of months. Since all our honey is post-brood #warré honey, it takes time and patience (like many of the... other best things in life). #warrebeekeeping #australianhoney #rawhoney #singlesource #slowfood #southaustralia #limestonecoast #boandikcountry See more
17.01.2022 Well, it's been an interesting spring so far, that's for sure.
17.01.2022 Some really cool pictures here!
15.01.2022 #Honey bees use evaporative air conditioning to cool their hives. By expelling small amounts of water and fanning their wings at the entrance (or on a mesh floor inside the hive), specially designated aircon bees keep the hive cool. But if they run out of water or the hive is low on honey stores, or on days when the temperature goes soaring over 40, a hive can struggle, and air conditioning bees will die, working themselves to death to save the colony. Even though I keep water close to my apiaries many of them have struggled with the combination of floral #dearth and massive heat spikes we’ve had down here (thankfully we’re not on fire). Keep cool everyone, and if you’re in a heat wave don’t forget to hydrate! #warre #beefacts #heatwave
12.01.2022 I'll be chatting about bees, honey, and juggling beekeeping with being the one holding down the fort at home with the kids. Feel free to swing by and ask me stuff!
11.01.2022 Found this article interesting. Keeping in mind this is a North American perspective, I still think it's relevant to Australian beekeeping (at least at the commercial scale). I don't re-queen my hives very often, and my queens easily last around 3 years or longer. But the productiveness of the colony is definitely tied to how well the queen is laying and how well the brood is doing, and I know from speaking with large-scale commercial beekeepers that anual queen replacement is pretty standard in the industry. Food for thought. https://phys.org//2021-01-secret-reproductive-honey-bees.h

09.01.2022 First #swarm of the season for me, about 5m away from the hive. Now happily in a box... and hopefully staying in it. No guarantees with swarms! Thanks to @half.a.tomato for letting me know they were out and about.
06.01.2022 Four freshly crushed batches of coastal Warré honey from beautiful #Boandik country going out to the stores in Adelaide today! Without the bees I wouldn’t have the #honey, but it’s the ancient #ecosystem that makes the #terroir. #australianhoney #boandikcountry #limestonecoast #warrehoney #unspunhoney #foodporn #foodie #slowfood #localfood #sustainablefood

05.01.2022 Got to chat with people about bees! Thought I'd keep it to 10m... turns out I can't talk about bees for less than 50m once I get going. :)
02.01.2022 I’m in Toronto, introducing #warre #honey to friends, and making them sad about their other honey. Good food is an experience worth giving! @w2sixpackchef #unspunhoney #australianhoney #foodie #foodporn #rawhoney #wildfood #slowfood
