18.01.2022 For all his research career, Andy Baker has been interested in understanding the fluorescence properties of organic matter in the natural and engineered environ...ments. If you shine ultraviolet light at some dissolved organic matter, it will glow, and the wavelength at which it fluoresces tells you something about the organic matter and where it comes from. For many years, he has wanted to explore the organic matter fluorescence of organic molecules trapped in ice. Over six years ago, with Chris Fogwill, a plan was hatched, and implemented by some careful method development by Juee Vohra and others. Add a whole toolkit of biomarkers, detailed chronological work to work out where you are in the past, ocean circulation modelling and more from a huge and amazing team of researchers, and this is the result. It turns out that in Antarctic ice, the fluorescence provide evidence of trace amounts of microbial matter, and that this is associated with organic material that has been transported to the ice in snowfall, and originated from the open ocean. https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au//seasonal-sea-ice-changes-hol UNSW UNSW Science UNSW BEES

Heres whats available: Emergency $200 E-Vouchers an existing scheme available to any student experiencing temporary financial stress. Its for urgent day-to-day needs like groceries and internet. Emergency Grants up to $2,000 a one-off payment for students who have complex needs (multiple issues involving accommodation, loss of casual work, etc) and are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 situation. The value of the grants will vary based on individual needs and circumstances and will help enable students to continue their studies. Contact a Student Advisor determine if youre eligible. Interest Free Loans up to $4,000 these are available for students experiencing financial stress. You need to satisfy the criteria and be able to prove your capacity to repay in the future. They have also announced that international students who have been in Australia for more than 12 months can now access their superannuation, and special working arrangements have been introduced to allow increased work hours at major supermarkets and in aged care. 08.01.2022 #TBT to when we could do field work Grace Nye-Bulter is an honours student researching the ways common polymers degrade in the environment so we can better un...derstand how to identify marine debris and create solutions to mitigate pollution at the source. Grace and her team of volunteers have created mats that hold polymer samples which are collected at different time points and examined via spectroscopy to measure rates of degradation. Hopefully we can be out on the water again soon! #teamplastic

01.01.2022 It was wonderful to return to fieldwork for the first time since the pandemic, with a visit this week to Wellington Caves to download data loggers. New covid-sa...fe work practices were applied to ensure a safe trip. On Monday, the network of soil moisture loggers was downloaded, batteries changed, and fencing repaired. This site is part of a global network investigating the relationship between soil moisture and groundwater recharge on karst, led by Andreas Hartmann. You can read more from researcher Romane Berthelin here (Open Access) https://gi.copernicus.org/articles/9/11/2020/ On Tuesday, the network of drip loggers in Cathedral Cave had their data downloaded and some routine repairs. We now have almost ten years of data that tells us when groundwater recharge has occurred at the site. Has there been any recharge since the drought?
