17.01.2022 UNSW School of Women's & Children's Health #Paediatric Research Week commenced today and included presentations from our Masters by Research and PhD Students. Highlights included: * Dr Charley de Bock from Children's Cancer Institute gave the keynote address on his postdoctoral research developing advanced models of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) that will be used to improve our understanding of how T-ALL develops, as well as to study the efficacy of newly deve...loped therapies. * Clarissa Schilstra discussed her PhD research on social anxiety among adolescents and young adults with cancer. A previously, under-researched area of the cancer trajectory. * Dr Michael Coffey, who has submitted his PhD and is eagerly awaiting reviewers comments and conferment gave further insight into the gut milieu in cystic fibrosis. Dr Coffey's work was the first to identify and validate serum lipase as an early predictor of severity in paediatric acute pancreatitis. * Dr Didu Kariyawasam who joined us from the UK earlier this year, discussed her PhD research into novel strategies for the management of neuromuscular disease. Dr Kariyawasam is assessing the impact of state-wide genetic screening and counselling programs to enhance diagnosis and prevention in neuromuscular diseases. 09.01.2022 Currently, 75% of women are diagnosed when the cancer is already at an advanced stage. Those statistics are part of what drove me to devote the past 30 years of my career to research early detection of the disease When working as a women’s cancer surgeon, I too often saw the suffering caused by ovarian cancer. [This campaign] will not only raise funds for ovarian cancer research but also awareness of a disease that deserves our attention. - Prof Ian Jacobs, UNSW President... and Vice-Chancellor Read more: https://www.alumni.giving.unsw.edu.au/ovaries-talk-about-th CAMILLA AND MARC | UNSW Medicine | UNSW Alumni | #ovariestalkaboutthem | #powerandsolidarity | #CAMILLAANDMARC | #ovariancancer

08.01.2022 Prof Susan Ramus & international investigators have developed a new test to better diagnose different types of #ovariancancer. The tool could one day guide & improve treatment options for women diagnosed with the most common & deadliest form of the disease. In 2020, it is predicted that 1,532 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and 1,068 will die from the disease this year.... The researchers see great potential for the test to one day guide patient care. The test is already being used in ongoing clinical trials investigating whether certain subtypes are more sensitive to particular treatments among women with recurrent high-grade serous ovarian cancer. 07.01.2022 CAMILLA AND MARC started the conversation, and on World Ovarian Cancer day, let’s continue it - #ovariestalkaboutthem Globally, ovarian cancer is the 7th most commonly occurring cancer in women and the 18th most commonly occurring cancer overall. 295,000+ women around the world are diagnosed annually with ovarian cancer.... 184,000+ deaths are caused by ovarian cancer every year. A/Prof Caroline Ford and her team are developing an early detection test for ovarian cancer, however they need your help. The main bottle neck for research is funding. You can help us change health outcomes for women by donating or purchasing a #powerandsolidarity tee from C&M. https://gcrf.everydayhero.com/au/ovaries-talk-about-them-1 https://www.camillaandmarc.com/products/power-tee-black Special thanks to @mayaabrahamdesign for designing the #tealribbon & call to action imagery used by the team, below! #WOCD2020 #OvarianCancer #UNSWWOCD

01.01.2022 Today, CAMILLA AND MARC launched their #ovariestalkaboutthem campaign in partnership with UNSW and A/Prof Caroline Ford. This is a very personal milestone for brother & sister duo, Marc Freeman & Camilla Freeman-Topper who lost their mother to #ovariancancer when they were children. Through their grief, they have become a powerful voice for the voiceless, using their fashion brand to generate awareness of this hideous disease and to raise much needed funds for research. ... Funds raised from this campaign, will directly support the Gynaecological Cancer Research Group at #UNSW, and specifically the validation of an early detection test for ovarian cancer. In Australia, 1 woman dies every 8 hours from ovarian cancer - that's 3 women per day! This is largely due to the lack of an early detection test, stigma attached to discussing women's reproductive organs, and a dearth of funding for research. You can support the campaign by: 1) Purchasing a Limited Edition t-shirt: https://www.camillaandmarc.com/ebou/ovarian-cancer-tee.html 2) Donating directly to the research: https://gcrf.everydayhero.com/au/ovaries-talk-about-them-1 3) Sharing the campaign with your networks. #powerandsolidarity #CAMILLAANDMARC UNSW Medicine
