20.01.2022 It's really normal to worry about your dog not having fun any more if they have been diagnosed with arthritis - you're told to rest them, not let them play roug...h with other dogs, not let them play fetch, keep their weight under control and stop giving them treats.... it all sounds a bit.. boring!! But it doesn't have to be! There is SO MUCH that you can do to keep your dogs life full of fun and it doesn't have to complicated or expensive. Try focusing on their natural instincts... maybe start with sniffing: Encourage your dog to sniff the verges, trees, weeds. This is particularly fun for your dog if there have been other dogs/animals in the area before them. Dogs sniff to gain information, which provides significant mental stimulation, so let them stop to investigate things of interest. If your dog isn't used to sniffing on walks, they will likely need a bit of encouragement - get involved and point out things for them to sniff! This is a simple and FREE addition to your dogs routine which could make a big difference!

18.01.2022 Our dogs use facial expressions and body language to communicate how they’re feeling about many things, pain levels included. Have you ever noticed your dog’...s ears go back when you go to touch near a particular part of their body? Although in some cases, it may be because the dog may not be used to being handled in this area, it can also be because they are painful, or anticipating that something you are about to do will be painful. The first signs dogs show that they are unhappy or physically uncomfortable with something are often described as ‘avoidant’ behaviours, and include: Pulling ears flat back against their head. Widening their eyes (also called ‘whale eye’). Licking their lips. Turning their head away. Lowering the head (often in combination with ‘whale eye’). Turning their body away. Changes in tail position. Stiffening of the body. Keeping an eye out for ‘avoidant’ body language can help identify a pain focus earlier. If your dog is showing one or more of these signs regularly, please consult your vet ASAP!

01.01.2022 Top tips for exercising your dog with arthritis Tip number 7. Watch closely for signs of fatigue. Just because your dog can manage to walk 2 miles one day,... that doesn't mean they can do it every day! Arthritis waxes and wanes and they can have good and bad days. Watch for signs of them lagging behind, sitting down, dragging their feet, panting more lowering their head carriage... basically anything that may indicate pain. If you're seeing these signs it's time to head home and re-evaluate how much exercise your dog is doing each day. See more
