25.01.2022 Today we're celebrating the #internationaldayofgirlsandwomeninscience with some of the inspiring women from our Archives. Elizabeth Vance (Image 1) took part in a expedition for the McCoy Society of Investigation and Research as a first year student in 1937, later co-authoring a paper "List of Vascular Plants with Stella Fawcett. Georgina Sweet, born and raised in Brunswick, (Image 2, bottom left) was encouraged by her father into a career in science. Go dad! She published w...idely and became regarded as Australia's foremost parasitologist and in 1920 the University's first female Associate Professor. Immigrating with her family to Australia in 1919, Gretna Weste (Image 3), turned her love of nature as a a child into a career in Botany. Graduating Dux of her school, and winning a scholarship to the University of Melbourne, Gretna had a succesful career as a teacher, researcher and academic. The University of Melbourne Archives are full of stories of women's accomplishments across the disciplines. We celebrate the women setting an example to today's girls and young women to pursue their passions in the sciences. #Archives #WomeninSTEM #Science #girlsinscience #Socialhistory #Universityarchives #UOMCulturalCommons

13.01.2022 Our archivist Melinda Barrie recently spoke with ABC journalist Jacinta Parsons about the extraordinarily story of clothing manufacturer Fletcher Jones and his vision of a cooperative profit-sharing, company. Listen here to learn more: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/jx8i We are fortunate to hold the Fletcher Jones Business and Family Records in our archives. Pictured below are the man himself at the 1948 opening of the Fletcher Jones Factory site in Warrnambool; the 1975 Ralph Jone...s submission for the Water Tower at the 'Pleasant Hill' factory site. Fletcher Jones was also profoundly influenced by the teachings of Toyohiko Kagawa, a Japanese labour activist and Christian philosopher, and his co-operative projects in Japan. He invited Kagawa to Australia and in 1936 visited Japan himself to see how co-operatives and profit-sharing businesses and communities operated there. As well as documenting the trip with photographs and letters, Fletcher Jones acquired many mementos including, ‘Insect Hearing Festival’ from the book ‘We Japanese: Being Descriptions of Many of the Customs, Manners, Ceremonies, Festivals, Arts and Crafts’.

13.01.2022 This #PrideMonth we're celebrating some of the LGBTQI+ creators in the Archives, including Alice Anderson, who owned the first female-run garage in Australia. Alice employed only women, giving them a sort of apprenticeship in washing and repairing cars, selling petrol, giving driving lessons and making chauffeur trips because few people had cars at the time. There is nothing in Alice's papers to confirm her sexuality, and while she's been claimed by the 'A History of LGBTIQ+ ...Victoria' report, historians also note the lack of evidence. In a new blog post, Senior Archivist Katie Wood explores #HerStory. Read more: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/6hti Images: Alice Anderson wearing chauffeur uniform, photograph, Frances Derham collection, 1988.0061.01551; Poem, probably written by Alice Anderson, c1920s. Please God/ That I may never look on you with the eyes of a stranger/ That this communion be ever renewed in fresh ways/ That the flame of eternity that is ours be written in light; Alice Anderson and friend, c1920s. 12.01.2022 #WorldMusicDay on 21 June is a day when music of all kinds is celebrated by making it and listening to it. The only rule is that the music must be completely free! This year one of many international collaborations you can take part in is junkophonics: making your own instrument from found objects and household waste and then seeing what sounds you can make. Rare music has a fabulous collection of instruments that were well ahead of junkophonics. Dating most likely from the ...1930 or 40s, pipes like these were made by Australian school children to play themselves. The kids’ instruments upcycled old bamboo curtain rods and wine (or other bottle) corks: paint was optional but really effective! 11.01.2022 As the Australian Open grips tennis fans internationally, a tiny piano piece by French composer Erik Satie, Le Tennis, captures a spectator’s unique perspective in less than a minute. The text translates as: Play? Yes! The good server. ... What nice legs he has! He’s got a good nose. Break serve. Game! If you'd like to hear the music (and some energetic tennis), see Ruben and Trevor Zahra’s Paper Movies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tm2tmBKs70. 04.01.2022 The Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act became law under the Fraser government in December 1976, although according to his biographer Margaret Simons, he later thought that his government should have done more to support Aboriginal rights. Here, Fraser and other government officials speak with Aboriginal representatives during an official visit to the Northern Territory in 1978. After parliament, Fraser was involved in the campaigns to recognise the Stolen Gener...ations and for Reconciliation. To find out more about records relating to Aboriginal affairs in the Malcolm Fraser collection, see our new subject guide: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/7p2i #Reconciliation #MoreThanAWord

01.01.2022 We love this photo of Doris McKellar playing #tennis with her good friend Mary "Polly" Turnbull.
